I would like to get my nephew a springer for x-mas and was wondering what a good choice would be. I would prefer a Diana since my brother (the kids dad) and I love our 52's. It would be to teach him firearm safety and to do some target shooting in the back yard. I'm sure eventually he will hunt to some extent for squirrel and other vermen on their property.
Seems like a Diana 24 would be a good choice and be easy to cock and be a really sweet shooter. You might end up liking how it shoots and shoot it more than your son though, lol.
I am looking for one myself for my 10 year old. Mine is on the small and cute side but unless yours is on the large side a 34 is going to be more something he'll have to grow into.
Since I can't find a 24 for the right price I think I'm sticking with his Crosman 1077 with its horrible trigger and the Daisy 953 which is the right size but still a big more awkward to cock than a break barrel springer.
These have been reported to be good trainers, and he sure would like the "cool" look! Even I do!
I do not have one, so just suggesting it as something to look at and research.
The 61 is a repeater, but with no way to keep track of shots, a dry fire will surely happen, so for a first timer/trainer I would go with the single shot 60.
The 34 is a tad heavy for most ten year olds. The 24, while considered a "kid's gun", is quite adequate for an adult. Just has a bit less power. You have to consider cocking effort, as well.
It is always best to pay a bit more for a first gun. There have been scores of kids turned off on shooting because their first gun, be it air or firearm, was the cheapest on the rack. Consider, too, that many of these lower-powered guns like the 24, won't be out-grown. Maybe an HW30?

If I didnt like mine so much I would sell you Mine NIB still never shot it but mounted a Osprey 2.5x20 Compact Scope, my other is Custom Stock 92 which I plan to take to the Grave ! I did see acouple of Youth Model 92s on Yellow pages !
I think thats another Great Choice .I Have rws 24 in 177 & .22 which are Keepers & Hard to find nowadays But you still have Time before Santa is Here !
Single shot, bull-pup, real easy to cock (compound linkage), adjustable stock, VERY accurate single shot, you can put peep sights and start training that mini-sniper of yours.
Easy to maintain, they used to come with a spare spring and a spare seal. The balance is real nice for very small youngsters or girls. They scope easily and they kick so little that any scope will hang in there and do a superb job.
I have a 9 year old son, and a great HW 30 that was tuned especially for him. However I will agree with Hector that the model is far the best damn gun for a kid at that age. Also an adult as I love shooting the gun tremendously. Light weight, easy to cock, a superb barrel that is accurate as hell. One of the best guns for the money anywhere. I have the 61, and the model 60 single shot with the steel breech. These are great guns hands down!!
