I was in for a big surprise when Vortek sent me a package that I was so eagerly waiting for.they sent me two springs!....a 32 coil prelubed .130 HIY fitted with the famous Proguide and a 5mm flanged plastic top hat and another, a 28coil .142 HIY fitted with a 7.7mm heavy metal tophata pro seal and two plastic containers containing heavy tar and a special lubricant with excellent film adhersion properties.and also a whole lot of metal and delrin/nylon spacers and a sample front stock screw with a delrin boss for better service contact.

More than what I had asked for!

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

In the beginning I had requested Tom to handpick the newest and the best kit he had.

They took a couple of days to send me the kit....man, didnt they engineer it well.

I tested both the springs.

The 32 coil one with the plastic top hat did not cock initially, Vortek had squeezed in an extra coil to meet my requirementI had told them that I would be using only heavy pellets...their standard for the 54 PG2 is 31 coils.Tom suggested that i to do away with the top hat and then try I machined a tight fitting metal centering washer with a 2mm flange and tested it.installation was a breeze, Vorteks kits powerful kits come in small packages.

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Result smooth cocking, a short, quick and sharp shot cycle.no buzz, no twang, no vibrationthe action just moved back in a great hurry and the pellet too was long gone.this gun had never shot like this before!

I had only the heavy pellets on my mind all through this 54 experiment drama which has been going on for a while now LOL

Velocity with High Impact 19gr pellets (the best that you can lay your hands on in India)

723.5, 714.8, 713.1, 711.7, 721.0 (maximum energy 22.08ft/lbs)

Velocity with RWS Superdome 14.3gr pellets

828.0, 827.0, 834.0, 837.8, 839.5 (maximum energy 22.38ft/lbs)

Next I tried the short 28coil .142HIY with the heavy top hat

Result smooth cocking although a little heavy.this one too a short, quick and sharp shot cycleI could hardly notice the difference between the two set ups.the chrony had a slightly different tale to tell

Velocity with High Impact 19gr pellets

738.7, 740.6, 735.0, 730.4, 734.0 (maximum energy 23.14ft/lbs)

Velocity with RWS Superdome 14.3gr pellets

816.0, 823.1, 819.0, 821.3, 816.4 (maximum energy 21.51)

You can clearly see that the earlier spring handled the lighter pellets better, this one was developing too much force for the fella to stay in place.hence the lower velocity.

For maximum velocity I had used a run in Maccari seal during both the tests with an OD of 28.3mm (thanks to Chris of C.A.P), the pro seal measured 28.65

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

So the heavier set up staysI had particularly asked Tom to send me a kit for the heavy pelletbut it it is clear that their standard product will more than satisfy 54 users

Their customer service has been OUTSTANDING throughout and Tom had been a great help all through

They have engineered and designed this kit very well.i know for sure from my experience when any gun shoots like that.

A BIG THANKS TO VORTEK AND EVERYONE HERE AT DIANAWERK

I will guess

"32 coil prelubed .130 HIY fitted with the famous Proguide and a 5mm flanged plastic top hat and another, a 28coil .142 HIY fitted with a 7.7mm heavy metal top hata pro seal and two plastic containers containing heavy tar and a special lubricant with excellent film adhersion properties.and also a whole lot of metal and delrin/nylon spacers and a sample front stock screw with a delrin boss for better service contact."

32 .130 coils VS 28 in .142, I will pick the first one

HI is 723.5 and MAX energy is 22.08 F/P and a 32 COIL .130 spring

HI is 740.6 and MAX energy is 23.14 F/P and a 28 COIL .142 spring

QUESTION:???

would a LESS coil spring with a HEAVY wire shoot a 19 gr. pellet faster??

maybe the answer is YES it will

I am convincing myself on this IDEA

thanks PK you do some HARD experiments buth the MATH is on your side with High Impact 19gr pellets

yes Warren...

.....Vortek had very smartly balanced the spring - piston size/weight...short spring, thicker wire and a bigger top hat....''slowing down the piston and adding mass creating a greater volume of air at the last second ensuring that the pellet does not prematurely exit the breech before it has maximum power behind it''...very interestingly, the metal top hat was slip fit on the spring and not too tight, hence the gun may be a little loud ....but it'll fire that heavy pellet away, the way you wanted it....Tom did tell me that they liked the heavy set up too....

makes me WONDER

May 29 2011, 7:15 AM

will a thin wire .120 compared to a thick one .128 make the ACCELARATION of the piston slow/fast

of course; but if you add pellet weight you need a BALANCED wire spring

then my next question is!!@

.120 wire and 39 coils (M94) for .177 pellets and in 7 grains (900 fps)

.128 wire and 33 coils (M34) for .22 pellets and in 14.3 grains (730 fps)

.142 wire and 28 coils (M48) with .25 pellets in .19 grians and 650 fps??

and what does the SPACING in the coils distance come to play???

wow Warren!...

....just where is Hector?

more ahead....350 shots and 48 hours later i checked with the chrony again...but this time not before actually weighing the pellets (this is a new supply of the same pellets i received from the manufacturer today morning)...weight varied between 18.2gr - 18.5gr....i chose the 18.3 and 18.4 for the tests...

762.0, 768.6, 765.9, 756.0, 753.7, 753.1, 762.1, 751.3, 758.6, 760.7, 755.4

maximum energy - 24.01ft/lbs!

all through the gun showed no signs of any labor, one healthy shot after another...i used the same pellets for checking accuracy...

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

picture of the sample front stock screw that Vortek sent me...makes sense machining one for the rear one also....

What do you want me for, PK?

May 31 2011, 8:58 AM

it seems you got exactly what you wanted.

I can understand the need and desire to shoot locally available pellets. And if 18½ grains is all there is, then it is all there is.

What you have now is pretty much the effect of a heavy piston in your gun. Although I would try one last experiment:

Put some hot glue between spring and top hat; and between top hat's face and piston put some adhesive tape. Something that can later be dissolved with thinner if you do not like the results.

What I would like to see tested in a UNITIZED spring-piston assembly under those conditions.

Apart from that, congrats! You now have EXACTLY what YOU wanted and no one can take that knowledge away from you.

Un Abrazo!
