Hi Scott,
If you're just starting out, I recommend you join affiliate programs rather than an MLM group. Of course, unless you have your own product, any kind of marketing is MLM to some degree. By MLM I'm referring to "groups" that involves "uplines and downlines," etc.
Affiliate programs, while still partially restrictive, give you much more flexibility in how you market yourself and your business proposition. I think that anyone who is a more seasoned marketer is becoming more resentful when people try to "recruit" them into a downline.
That said, affiliate programs are basically the idea of:
Someone has a great product idea, and develops or writes that product. The creator will be reaping the rewards for years to come.
This person sets up an affiliate program, and anyone can join for free. As an affiliate, you promote this person's product through your affiliate link, and when you make a sale, you get paid a commission.
Try to shoot for programs that offer between a 35-60% commission. You don't really want to waste your time on anything less.
For now, I highly suggest you read Gary Shawkey's Secrets.
It includes an extensive and very enlightening interview by Brian Garvin, "Mr. SUPER Affiliate himself."
Reading this will definitely help to get you on the right path toward successfully promoting affiliate programs -- or anything else you decide to promote.
Do a search for "Gary Shawkey's Secrets" in Google. Some sites are still trying to sell it to you, but you can easily find it as a free download on others.
Best of luck in whatever you decide
