...do what I do.
1. Do an Amazon.com search on the topic you're interested in. See what the people who've posted reviews have to say about the books listed in their database.
2. Then, open a second browser window for your public library's searchable catalog. Here in Tucson, the magic URL is:
http://infolynx.ci.tucson.az.us/
3. Go to the library's "reserve online" option, and request the books that have piqued your interest. In Tucson, you can request that the books be delivered to the library branch nearest you, and you can even receive e-mail notification of their arrival.
4. After you've taken those library books for a "test drive," then, and only then, go to a bookstore and buy the ones that were helpful.
