And I'm glad I did. The host's computer system handles such things as unsubscribe requests and bounces, which are messages sent to e-mail addresses that are no longer valid. If I took care of these things myself, the work would burn up several hours of each day.
As for asking permission, yes, please, oh, please do it before you bestow an e-mail newsletter or some other missive upon your customers.
