It seems that the internet is not just about searching for information or staying in contact with people through email; we have now reached the age of online communities.

Online communities provide a basis for people to discuss similar topics, learn and understand how other people in the world view various topics and actually learn about growing trends and issues across the world. An online community is a place to meet people with similar interests, likes and dislikes and it does not take into account gender, race and country of origin.

Business communities allow similar industries to post advertisments, discuss issues within that industry and view ideas and concepts to assist in company practices. It also allow professionals to develop new skills through learning from others and understand what practices competitors may be applying to their business.

Personal communities share a similar practice to business communites although here people can develop friendships and catch up with old acquaintences, such as in Schoolsunite, where you can log into your school and year and post information about yourself and learn of others from that same year. This community can allow individuals from rural or remote countries to communicate with urban or highly populated or westernized areas to learn, develop and understand the differences between them.

Online communities are useful tools, but do we use them enough and for the right reasons? Are online communities a passing phase or are they hear to stay?
