A lot of people don't know where and how to start building their downlines mainly because they're hesitant to approach their friends and family, although many MLM marketers will say that this is a good pool of leads. There is a way, however, to jumpstart your business without marketing to your friends and family.
I found a website called Profit Rally that a lot of online marketing gurus are praising. They have adopted Profit Rally's programs although they themselves are individually successful in their business. Newbies, like myself, can also learned a lot about online marketing as I have. I learned to use tools and techniques I have never heard of before, like traffic exchanges, link exchanges, and many more. If you register (for free), you get access to a discussion board where you can get answers to your questions straight from the gurus, which have all been very responsive and helpful. My favorite thread in the discussion board is where the gurus and members announce (maybe brag) the number of people who joined their downlines. If you don't already have a business, Profit Rally promotes a few. And the gurus also joined, in addition to the ones they are already promoting.
