As i suppose there are many ways to attract customer's attention to a particular website. There are some tools on the internet that enables you to promote or advertise your website. E.g. like banners, search engines, linkings, flash ads, pop-ups, etc. But before you could attract your customers, It is important for you to know your target audiences because attracting to a specific market is easy, they are already looking for what you offer, making sure you know what the look for allows you to be there when they are looking for their options.
By publishing advertorial banners about your website on other websties or search engines is a good way to advertise your website. Thus, it also brings more traffic to your website for people who has visited on the website you have advertised on. By the conventional way, we can also publish an advertisement about your website on the newspapers, daily magazines (depends what are you selling), media, radio, etc..
There are more ways that can be explained. But as a start, this should be sufficient enough. =)
