Definetely by browsing through some websites, we can see some button that says "MAKE MONEY ONLINE!!!". Through my observations, there are many scams around. However of course, there are genuine ways to make money online.
The best method of making money online is to do your sales. Examples I would like to suggest are through eBay, and Lelong malaysia, which are online auction and selling websites. Other ways is to use a company's established websites for sales (doing online sales directly without a 3rd party company).
Another method would be to gather profit from advertisements. There are many successful people that actually make profit through advertisements. For example, I am hosting a website, and other people pay me to advertise their things on my website. I get paid at the end.
I believe there are many other methods around. As we all know, the internet is a VERY powerful tool, not only to make money , but also for information, entertainment, etc.
