To me, the first thing to do before I started marketing, for free or paid for marketing, would be to create an ideal client profile.
When you can get in the head of your ideal client, you'll spend your time/money marketing to the right person/people.
You can do a search on the internet for ideal client... and there are chapters in books on them.
Basically, your ideal client...
a) knows about your product and service
b) is willing to pay for it w/o asking for for discounts
c) they recognize the value of your product/service
d) they come back for more
e) the refer others to you w/o you asking
