the nerve endings in tails are pretty much fully formed after 3 days. At the practice I managed, we would refuse puppies over 3 days...OR the owner could pay for lidocaine injections for each puppy so the puppy would not be in so much discomfort. Most tail dockings in a clinic (and at homes) are a crush and twist method of the tail. Not pleasant if you can feel it.
I think the option should be left open to have the dockings done at a veterinarian after the three days if Lidocaine or the like is used. What happens if you have a puppy that is ill at 3 days and are not able to do the docking at that time??
