How about a new Outlook?
The Dallas Animal Shelter CAN be a success.
The Dallas Animal Shelter CAN adopt more animals.
Take the lead of cities with successful adoption rates that vigorously work with the community. Harsh laws are NOT the answer. A collaborative effort with the community IS the answer.
Instead of alienating the very people who can help, embrace them.
You have hundreds of newly energized dog exhibitors and enthusiasts who are excited about being part of the solution. Give them a chance. Keep them onboard.
They are dog experts and will volunteer their expertise in:
1. Humanely trapping loose dogs;
2. Fostering their breeds as well as mixed breeds;
3. Coordinating successful off-site adoptions on a regular basis;
4. Coordinating voluntary low cost/no cost spay neuter initiatives that go into the districts that need it the most;
5. Spearheading donations from the private sector utilizing all their dog friendly contacts;
6. Providing much needed equipment like muzzles, traps, and other equipment as needed by the shelter;
7. Soliciting professional donations from their many contacts including veterinarians, dog trainers, dog behaviorists, groomers, retail pet supplies;
8. Soliciting locations for off-site adoptions and coordinating the events;
9. Marketing adoptions and soliciting positive media coverage;
10. Bathing and grooming dogs for adoption days;
11. Providing dog training for the public which aids in responsible ownership; and
12. Providing public education on how to select the right dog, how to housetrain, how to break common problems like chewing and barking, all of which lower the rate of owner returns, and providing education on every aspect of responsible ownership which helps the community peacefully coexist with dogs.
