On chipping

by

I have for years had my pups micro-shipped when they get their vet check. That way it is done, and I have the info on the contract, and when the puppy is registered with AKC, you can just sign the option for $12 more to have them registered with the CAR program.

Reason I haven't gone into doing the chipping myself is......When you call the company to check on a chip #, they can tell you what vet had that series of numbers, where you can follow up by calling them and finding who the owner is. However, when you buy your own, thru various sources, the retailing buys in large quantity from the company but then what they turn around and sell you as an individual, there is no record of what numbers, etc.

I have personally seen where someone brought a lost dog into the vets, they scanned it, called the company, found out which vet, called them with the number and description of the dog, and got a hold of the owner.

But also, with dealing with rescue, you can scan and find a micro-chip, trace it back, and all it will tell you, for instance, is that it was Hunte Corp, and have no idea who the owner was.

I know it costs a bit more having the vet do it. But to me, it gives me a better peace of mind.
