Re: Question......... Do they offer testing for elongated palate genetic markers?

by

an elongated soft palate is a trait that is conformational, genetic testing to see if it is there is really not necessary, the dog has a problem or doesn't or has it to one degree or another.

I don't know if I agree with the vet that says all bulldogs would benefit from a palate clip, we have only ever had one done in all of our years and I do not view it as a problem with the dogs I own.

I do believe the culture of "just fix it surgically" has caused many problems for some breeders, particularly in some areas where palate clips are as routine as dew claw removal for some breeds.
Many newer breeders have been introduced to this surgery as a matter of course, and this is a real shame.
Instead of teaching to correct health issues with logical breeding, they have been taught to "just get it fixed and breed the dogs anyway."

The Health committee will keep you posted on testing in this area in the future.

If you want to ensure the dog you have has a good palatte, talk to your vet about a thorough exam. If you are concerned about it in a potential stud dog, ask the stud owner to get documentation of an exam from his vet.
If you keep having to get this surgery done, maybe time to change course in your breeding program.
