SB250 is a an animal rights driven bill being portrayed to politicians and the media as an animal welfare initiative.

It is actually a mandatory neutering bill for all of our states dogs and cats. With the exception of those too old or ill for surgery, it mandates ALL dogs and cats over 6 months be neutered unless a special unaltered license is obtained. These licenses may be denied if the applicant has EVER been cited for ANY animal related violation of any state, city, county animal ordinance.

If your elderly neutered dog got loose and impounded, or you were cited for having a barking dog.
Or if your cat is overdue for a rabies vaccine.
ALL you valuable livestock, service, herding, working, show or performance dogs may be ordered to be spayed or neuter within 30 days. You are not guaranteed a hearing, the county can choose to send you a letter stating that your valuable animals must altered and that your appeal is henceforth complete.

Any violation, even an error on paperwork, is grounds to revoke all licenses held by an owner.

SB250 will make it a crime to possess an unaltered dog without such a license and a crime to fail to comply with orders to alter a dog.

IF an owner has EVER had a license revoked? They may not be granted ANY FUTURE unaltered licenses.

Please let other responsible animal owners know that the time to act is NOW. The NAIA capwiz tool linked to here is an easy way to make yourself heard.

This will only take a minute, even if you already wrote, you MUST do so again to oppose and be counted because the bill has been amended.

Pass it on!

California SB 250 - The 13th Version of AB 1634
Take Action!

The fight continues...

April 3, 2009

UPDATE: Amendments to SB 250 have just been filed by sponsor Florez that do nothing of significance to address our core concerns with this mandatory spay/neuter bill. We ask that you continue to educate lawmakers -- this time your own State Senator -- about the dangers posed by this reckless bill to dogs, dog owners and the community. Be sure and use the talking points and lobbying tool below to email AND FAX your Senator.

Californias dog and cat lovers are encouraged to act now to stop SB 250, the latest attempt by supporters of mandatory spay/neuter to find some way to package their failed concept. SB 250 is very similar to the 12th version of AB 1634, which was decisively defeated in the California Senate last year after a grueling 18-month battle.

Unfortunately AB 1634 has been reborn with a new bill number and sponsor, this time as SB 250 introduced by Senator Dean Florez. The bill has been referred to the Senate Local Government Committee, but has not yet been scheduled for a hearing.

Click here to read the originally introduced version of SB 250.

SB 250 is actually worse than the last version of AB 1634, in that it adds a long list of new restrictions on who could never legally own an intact dog or cat. SB 250 is the de facto 13th version of AB 1634. Californians can defeat SB 250 just as they defeated AB 1634, if they act!

Please use the talking points below to send a friendly, informative email AND FAX to your State Senator, warning them of the unintended consequences that mandatory spay/neuter carries with it. During a time of budget crisis and the need to focus on more immediate priorities, urge them not to waste precious time -- and taxpayer money -- on misguided legislation that has been rejected in past sessions.
