The PETA Intrusion
PETAs attempt to influence and prevent the airing of Westminster on American National TV has angered even the producers of the film, which originally caused the problem in the British dog world between the BBC and Crufts. The filmmakers have no connection to PETA and are ideologically opposed to PETAs aims. The producer of the film specifically stated that he was horrified that PETA is using the film to further its own warped agenda. He claims his film is about animal welfare and not animal rights! Nonetheless these pages have little sympathy for either of the involved parties. The producer exaggerated his film in an attempt to label all breeders as uncaring producers of animals with serious health concerns. They relied on individual case examples which were merely anecdotal in reality. Instead of conducting a full-fledged investigation of all breeding practices, they generalized to a fault and came to many erronous conclusions. In their attempt to be sensational they represented a very small minority as being the majority. How else could they have sold this program to the BBC? And now, not only are they paying the price through PETA and its like but the very goals of their program have been both obstructed and defeated by PETA. That PETAs animal record is more than appalling it is shocking cannot be denied by even the Alec Baldwins of this world. PETA kills 97 percent of the dogs that come to its shelters and admits that its ultimate goal is to rid the world of what it calls the domestic enslavement of dogs as either pets or working dogs. PETA is nothing more than a bunch of crackpots who do not care about anything but publicity and making money. And unfortunately while all the denials of the film producers may be worthwhile, indeed they did nothing but encourage this kind of thinking when they relied upon anecdotal experiences as the basis for their film.

We've had TV star bulldogs before, like Bufford on Jake and the Fat man.
Great show, great acting on the part of Bufford..
But with the recent gig on the Rose Bowl parade, where the skateboarding bulldog was the hit of the parade, up against competiton that some communities spent thousands of dollars producing the float, seeking the attention Tyson was receiving internationally.
Tyson and others also have a big spin on YouTube as well. In the last week, I've had two people call me wanting a bulldog they can train for similar stunts... I went click...........
Now to supply the demand for pups, many a bad dog is being bred and I don't mean by us, the ones that show and do selective breeding but by those that bought Full Registration pups from breeders who don't know how to make a sale unless they're encouraging the buyers that they too could get into the "business" of breeding bulldogs.
I know what it's like to get unwarranted negative publicity, such as the breed is getting right now and I've dealt with it by just being me and moving forward with my head held high...doing what's right.
This is what we must do as BCA members and bulldog breeders. Don't let the turkeys get you down. Respond by adhering to good breeding practices, breed only those that should be bred. Also keep your chin up and be proud you're a part of the guys wearing the white hats... Also don't knock a breeding program just because you don't like the person. I see this often enough. It's contrary to BCA's ethics rules and shows poor sportsmanship. This makes us weak in the eys watching us from the outside.
In light of this recent storm brewing with standard changes and what not, we should be circling the wagons, not shooting at each other.

HSUS Turn In A Breeder Program
Breeders, BEWARE. Yep, I'm talking to ALL breeders...especially those that have their heads buried in the sand thinking they are above reproach...The HSUS is taking names and they want YOU. (yes, that includes the hobby/show breeders too), courtesy of their "Pet Seller Complaint Form".
BEWARE: If you sell someone a puppy and for whatever reason that person is not happy with their new little fluffy bundle of joy, YOU can be turned in to the HSUS!!! Yes, folks, the HSUS has now appointed themselves "breeder watchdogs"...All a person has to do is download the 6 page form (count 'em **6** pages of forms), fill them out with their name and contact information and supply the BREEDER'S contact information, then submit copies of the packet (with all contracts, registration, medical records, etc) to the following:
Once this form is complete and additional documents have been attached make six copies of your packet. - Send one copy to Puppy Mills, The Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L Street NW, Washington, DC 20037.
- Send one copy to the Department of Agriculture in the state in which the breeder does business.
- Send one copy each to the Attorney General of the state in which the breeder resides and to the Attorney General in your state.
- Save one copy and all originals for your records.
Folks, it is this simple: The HSUS is NOT a government agency. The HSUS is NOT a law firm. The HSUS is NOT a law enforcement agency nor does it have enforcement powers. What the HSUS is, in fact, is a multi mega dollar Animal Rights group out to destroy dog breeders, the fur trade, the meat and dairy industry, and would LOVE nothing more than to see America become a land of tofu munching vegans.
Does this description sound familiar? It should. The HSUS has the SAME agenda as their Animal Rights cousin, PeTA. However, the HSUS has chosen to disguise themselves as a "animal protection agency" dressed in thousand dollar suits and driving Jaguars.
So, before any of you write and say, "I'm a responsible breeder and I guarantee all of my puppies and I only breed to better the breed"...You are not immune. Most people that I know have a website with their contact information listed (or even if you don't, it is VERY easy to get by anyone). The website may be nothing more than a way to show off your show wins, your stud dog, etc. Just a site of general information for potential puppy buyers. Let's say that one night a Animal Rights foot-soldier is cruising the 'net and stumbles onto your site. Maybe they don't like the fact that you show dogs, maybe they don't like the breed of dog(s) that you own, maybe they don't like the fact that you are a breeder period.
So the AR zealot decides to turn you in to the HSUS...even though this person has never met you, much less bought a puppy from you. BAM! All of your information is now in the hands of the enemy...the group that is working THIS YEAR to bring down "the rest of us" with the introduction of the PUPS bill in congress.
My best advice: protect yourselves. Don't post personal contact information on your website. Be extra careful of AR lunatics posing as "puppy buyers". And most importantly: DO NOT SIGN AWAY YOUR DOGS and DO NOT let any "humane" officer onto your property without a WARRANT. (Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on t.v., if you need legal advice contact an attorney to find out what laws are in your state)

This is not good. Not for any breeder. If a puppy buyer is mad enough, or feels they have been "scammed" , YOU can now be "turned in"...but what makes this so terrifying is that the HSUS will have ALL of YOUR information. Pretty handy information for an Animal Rights group to have laying around, huh? To be used for WHATEVER purpose they see fit: RAIDS, comes to mind. Especially if you have "pit bulls" (which the HSUS loves to see killed at every opportunity) or breeds of dogs that are in high demand from the public.
What would YOU do if the HSUS came-a-knockin' on your door? Would you let them in?
Would you fall victim to their coersion tactics of signing over your dogs so "it won't be as hard on you later"? What would you do? Do you know what YOUR rights are?

Question......... Do they offer testing for elongated palate genetic markers?

Just wondering as I don't see that mentioned as one of the things everybody is testing for. All else seems to be listed, but elongated palates are not.
I know of a bulldog vet in So Cal that says "ALL" bulldogs can benefit from an elongated palate surgery, while at the same time, it's a prohibited alteration according to AKC Rules Applying To Dog Shows, Chapter 11, section 8A. In that section is a list of things that cannot be done to alter a dog and still be elligible to be shown. Correcting an elongated palate is one of the items listed.
I'd like to hear from those that are behind all this testing and what they think this surgery.
Just know, I support cleaning things up within our breed but in no way am I labelling the breed problematic.
If you go to my web site for DK Bulldogs, you'll see my crazy and funny now 10 year old challenging others to take a toy from her mouth as she runs around. Her daughter is also on there dancing away. She's 7 years old.
Anyway, I hope we can learn form the responses this post creates...

an elongated soft palate is a trait that is conformational, genetic testing to see if it is there is really not necessary, the dog has a problem or doesn't or has it to one degree or another.
I don't know if I agree with the vet that says all bulldogs would benefit from a palate clip, we have only ever had one done in all of our years and I do not view it as a problem with the dogs I own.
I do believe the culture of "just fix it surgically" has caused many problems for some breeders, particularly in some areas where palate clips are as routine as dew claw removal for some breeds.
Many newer breeders have been introduced to this surgery as a matter of course, and this is a real shame.
Instead of teaching to correct health issues with logical breeding, they have been taught to "just get it fixed and breed the dogs anyway."
The Health committee will keep you posted on testing in this area in the future.
If you want to ensure the dog you have has a good palatte, talk to your vet about a thorough exam. If you are concerned about it in a potential stud dog, ask the stud owner to get documentation of an exam from his vet.
If you keep having to get this surgery done, maybe time to change course in your breeding program.

You're the first bulldogger I have ever heard approach this question in this way and it's music to my ears.
I believe that if you are breeding a dog that has had this surgery, you'll most likely get more of what you had. Correct me if I'm wrong...
An even bigger problem are those families that receive one of the offspring from one of these corrected dogs and hope to have him / her as a fun creature we know they can be.
I am also put aside by this vet's insight to this procedure and was even the victim to it once when one of my dogs was taken there by the co-owner and clipped. Funny thing is, the dog was non-problematic at our house and on one occasion, two weeks before he was operated on, was allowed to be taken to the vet by a novice breeder who had a bitch in heat and I couldn't make it to the vet for the surgical implant. While in this person's control while at their house, the dog bolted from his crate, got out of the house and then ran two city blocks going by Disneyland, crossing many lanes of traffic, all on a warm day. The people finally caught him and actually walked him back the two blocks home.
I arrived on the scene 45 minutes after it happened and they told me the story. I could see the remaining horror in their faces as they explained what had happened.
I then asked where my dog was and they pointed to the back yard. There he was sitting in the shade, hanging with a bunch of Pugs. I immediately noticed he wasn't even panting and quite well recovered from the extreme exercise.
This is the dog that had his palate clipped two weeks later by the vet that says, all dogs can benefit from a palate clip.
In closing, I'm happy you posted a reply as this topic seems to send many running for cover. The people who are scrutinizing our breeds health history, first and most determine that many of the bulldogs can't breath very well unless subjected to this surgery. Well, we best clean up what we do and breed "only" the choice dogs. This isn't so for many as they buy one bitch and if she becomes problematic, they correct the problem via altering surgery and proceed as though it never existed. This I believe is what AKC is touching upon when the rules say this surgery is one that should exclude your dog from AKC's gene pool for bulldogs and not be shown.

I have an almost 8 month old puppy-new owner of the Enlish Bulldog breed. I am confused about when the best time to neuter is. I am getting conflicting messages. The breeder recommended waiting until he is 18 months old in order to fully mature. Other bulldog owners are telling me as early as 6 months to a year. He is getting more aggressive lately. I would appreciate any information. Thanks.

I would neuter him now. Six months is plenty old for a male. Females you would want to wait a bit longer. I hope you understand that it will take a few months to get all the hormones out of his system so it won't be a quick fix on his aggression. Sometimes neutering doesn't help aggression at all. You should look into a trainer.

I didn't say physically mature but at seven months, they can sire a litter...
and AKC will allow you to register the litter.
I've always waited until 6-7 months. At 18 months, you have a horny dog with "possible" future behavior problems..
Like Jessica said, your dog is ready to become a dedicated family dog...

Staturday's big winner in Bulldogs was Jamie & Kassey Kimbal's boy named KIMBULL'S GUST O' WIND. They are the breeders on him as well.
He was moved up to the Open class starting with Palm Springs and he's now getting action while dealing with the big boys. In Palm Springs, he did a 3rd and a 2nd place on the two days he was enterred under breeder judges.
This gave Kasey the confidence to know that her boy has arrived.
Their dog Gus is a Ch DK's Mini Me son and his dam was a Cool Dude daughter.
PS: My arm is out of a cast since my last arm breaking brag so here I am again. So there....... LOL
