Last year I entered this photo of Da Gabester in The BulldogsWorld Photo Contest...
...and out of over 600 entries, we took 3rd place.
The prize was this Danbury Mint "Santa and Bulldog" figurine. The crazy thing is that it is MY bullies on the figurine!!! Look closely & you'll see my red brindle, Chubby girl...my red/white pied girl, Pip...and, of course my silly white boy, Gabe. INcReDiBuLL, huh?!!! This is my first Christmas season to really enjoy it & & had to share the photos...
Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season from our SittingBullies Gang!

This is another AR [Animal Rights] based tactic to take away our rights to
choose the appropriate procedures for our dogs.
As many of you know, the AVMA published a statement this week changing their
position regarding tail docking, discouraging it and calling it a "cosmetic"
procedure. The AKC was not consulted in the creation of the new AVMA
position and disagrees with their stance. As a breed with docked tails, we
need to band together to fight the AVMA and pressure them to change their
new policy.
I am asking all of you to read the email below from Jeff Shaver, an attorney
and active member of the American Rottweiler Club, and contact your vets to
see if they will not support the AVMA's new position.
We must band together to fight this assault on our dogs.

Subject: [USARotts] AVMA response ...to maintain the right to dock
All ,
I have been emailing with the DPCA [Doberman Pinscher Club of America] this
evening . They , like Randi and I , have been discussing ideas . The first
,...is a call to all members to send me a list of any of their vets who they
talk to that will not support the
AVMA , who will allow their names to be used and /or will do behind the
scenes research to provide the data for a fromal written response to the
AVMA ( they may of course help write and or edit it ).Due to the
requirements of the AVMA for empirical data to dispute their new decision
and change their mind , this type of help is a must . The DPCA is going to
do the same . Other clubs are being invited as well of course .We all need
the help of every member to gather these names and get them to me privately
as soon as possible . Please take a copy of the AVMA guidelines to you vets
and ask them their opinion and if they are willing to help ....real hands on
help . This is a chance for them to repay our loyalty for their services we
pay for over the years . If they have a question they may call me directly
(713 557 0807) or email at my work email jshaver@whiteshaverlaw.com . If
your vets can put you in contact with the State agency representative on
these type issues , they are welcome to contact me as well . Please send me
this contact information and I will follow up .
The next step suggested , and I agree , is to create a list of supporters
(clubs and groups) who can link for immediate PR and media releases . I will
also call on all members with experience in this area to send me their names
and volunteer to help create points of discussion and proper media releases
for this purpose .These people will work in conjunction with others from
other dock /crop breed clubs and , hopefully , AKC .
Just the first steps ,
Jeff Shaver

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has joined hands with
"animal rights" extremists and issued a new policy statement opposing Ear
Cropping and Tail Docking of dogs. Their summary is: "Ear cropping is a
cosmetic procedure with potential negative outcomes for the animal."
Stated in their "WELFARE CONCERNS-RISKS: General anesthetic - Cropping
should always be carried out under full anesthesia, which itself has
associated risks."
AVMA also states: "Postoperative Care - Dogs will experience some
discomfort during healing, stretching, re-taping and bandaging, and other
manipulations after surgery. Some will need their ears bandaged or taped
upright for days to months and they may be isolated from other dogs during
this period.
Potential Complications-As for any incision, cropped ears may become
infected."
Spay/neuter of dogs and cats doesn't include these same experiences? Why
not ban spay/neuter procedures? The hypocrisy of this new AVMA position is
mindboggling!
We encourage polite comments to Gail Golab, AVMA Animal Welfare Division, at
ggolab@ avma.org or 847-925-8070, your area veterinary association, AND your
personal veterinarian opposing this action by AVMA to support a radical
agenda to end all animal use and companionship.
Ear Cropping and Tail Docking
(EB revised 11/2008)
The AVMA opposes ear cropping and tail docking of dogs when done solely for
cosmetic purposes. The AVMA encourages the elimination of ear cropping and
tail docking from breed standards.
AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB STATEMENT ON AVMA EAR CROPPING AND TAIL DOCKING POLICY
New York, NY (November 21, 2008) -- The American Kennel Club(r) was advised
this week of the AVMA's newly amended policy on ear cropping and tail
docking following its adoption by the AVMA Executive Board at the
recommendation of their Committee on Animal Welfare on November 15, 2008.
Historically, the AKC has worked closely with the AVMA to ensure that the
rights of individual dog owners, and breed standards, remain
protected. However, the AKC was very disappointed to not have been consulted
regarding this latest iteration of the policy, despite having been in
frequent contact with the AVMA in recent months.
At a joint meeting this Wednesday AKC explained to the AVMA that we
recognize ear cropping and tail docking, as prescribed in certain breed
standards, are acceptable practices integral to defining and preserving
breed character, enhancing good health, and preventing injuries. These breed
characteristics are procedures performed to insure the safety of dogs that
on a daily basis perform heroic roles with Homeland Security, serve in the
U.S. Military and at Police Departments protecting tens of thousands of
communities throughout our nation as well as competing in the field.
Mislabeling these procedures as "cosmetic" is a severe mischaracterization
that connotes a lack of respect and knowledge of history and the function of
purebred dogs. Breed standards are
established and maintained by AKC Parent Clubs (each of the 158 AKC
registered breeds is stewarded by a breed-specific Parent Club) keeping
foremost in mind the welfare of the breed and the function it was bred to
perform.
As a not for profit organization that has been devoted to the advancement
and welfare of dogs for 125 years, the AKC believes that all
dog owners bear a special responsibility to their canine companions to
provide proper care and humane treatment at all times and that
responsible dog owners, in consultation with their veterinarian, have the
right to make decisions regarding appropriate care and treatment of their
pets.
AKC's policy on the issue, which remains unchanged, states:
The American Kennel Club recognizes that ear cropping, tail docking, and
dewclaw removal, as described in certain breed standards, are acceptable
practices integral to defining and preserving breed character and/or
enhancing good health. Appropriate veterinary care should be provided.
Dog owners who would like to contact AVMA directly regarding their policy
should direct comments to Gail Golab, head of the AVMA Animal Welfare
Division:
ggolab@ avma.org or 847-925-8070.

I dont believe anyone has ever posted a <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Westminster invitation so I thought I would share
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
An invitation to the Westminster KC show was my goal for 2008.. Dont know if we will be attending it or not but we got that long awaited Invitation in the mail
Though Booker is comfortably in the #4 spot now, when the Westminster deadline came and went we were in a deadlock with two other dogs It came down to the last win on the last day of the weekend. When the smoke cleared we maintained our #5 status by a mere 14 breed points. With the huge number of shows these dogs attended and then to have it come down to less than 30 breed points after 10 solid months of competition. It was a very stressful September and October to say the least.
Now it is time to relax and enjoy the last part of Bookers Specials career... The last three years have been a ride I will never forget. Special Thank you To Mike and Christy Otten who entrusted Booker to me so long ago.I dont think they ever dreamed that He and I would go so far.
Congratulations! I read elsewhere that someone posted that some may never get one of those invites and it's true. I never saw one until this year as Barb never scanned and emailed me the one she received. LOL
My Long Coat client and I sweated the weeks of October when I went to Bulldog specialties and didn't get to play with the Chi. It turns out that the dog that was making a push to catch us, fortunately enough for us, got beat a few times by class dogs.

I have found that it is harder to be top five in this breed than one would imagine. Not all dogs with enough quality to win have what it takes to endure the rigors of competition week in week out, year in year out. I feel very forunate.

My two young ones are best buddies. They love to play and play, then they'll be quiet and good.
But then, if John is sitting eating something, all eyes and attention are on him.
But this is Jasper's favorite place!!
I bought him a Harley Davidson hat, but learned hat don't fit Frenchies. Had to turn the brim up, and the ears just don't fit, and he wasn't a happy camper.
And I caught Dusty checking out the dishes John was putting in the dishwasher. Had to grab the camera fast.

I think it's really great that you have the young Bulldog for the Frenchie pup to run with, Patti. I'd bet that the Frenchie would be really bored if he didn't have your girl to burn energy with! I have two 8 month old Frenchie pups I'm showing right now and they are definitely full of energy to burn.

Only thing, hard to do without seeing the others to compare
by
That's where different opinions come in, whether one thinks one's topline is better, head, bone, etc.
Just seeing this one only, she has a lovely topline and tail set, good bone, can already see the length of skull, good jaw, etc. But, may be we'd like one of the others better. Who knows.

I have to say that I saw them at birth and then again at 7 weeks. I had 2 favorites at birth - this one and the red and white one that was marked very similarly to the mother. The sleeper was the piebald fawn/red and white. It was interesting to see how they matured and how the qualities that I liked at birth either continued to be significant or not. The red and white one is a quality puppy but I don't think she is as good as this one. She's on her way to a show home in Arizona. The sleeper is on her way to a show home in the Midwest. I think that sleeper has the second best head in the litter. I was very pleased with how well they all kept their bodies short and how well their structure came about. We'll see how they continue to mature.
I did the breeding strictly on type alone and how well each parent complemented each other. I was extremely familiar with the dogs in the pedigree as I had the privilege to live with each one of the dogs in the first two generations except for Artemis. I really enjoy appraising each animal's qualities and watching to see how those traits come down. It's a joy to take all that in and make my own decisions as to whom to breed to and go for exactly what I like regardless of what's "in style." If things don't work out, then I know I'm the only one to blame. I have to try to make every breeding count.

And, when you mention a "sleeper", it reminds me of years ago when Lil was whelping out a litter for another exhibitor. There was one male pup, that was the smallest, skinny, not much. But, Lil kept saying there was something about him, that he was the "sleeper". Ended up that was one the breeder kept, finished, and he did some nice winning in So. CA.
Good luck with this girl. I still think you should call her Smudge!!

The "sleeper" term is from the sports I love to watch, Patti. The Big Dance in March (the NCAA Basketball Tournament) is what really comes to mind with that term. I love the underdog.

I really like the length of upper arm and the shoulder angles she has! Nice angles all over actually and a nice NECK for that cobby body!
Just call her "Tonette" LMAO!
Posted on Dec 3, 2008, 11:49 AM from IP address 76.126.125.41
Well, I like how that her ears are set so low on her head and back by her neck, she has a nice wide front-good width between her legs which lead up to nice, wide shoulders. She also has a good tail set and length of her tail.
A very successful breeder told me recently that she never compares girls to boys (she said it's like comparing apples and oranges), and she did not compare the bitches to each other. Instead, she looked at the boy, and then looked at each of the three girls. I guess we have to decide on the sex and choose the best, if there is one, of the bunch?????

I will always remember that late mentor and how she always turned around and asked more questions of me whenever I asked a question or two initially. She always made me and others work for answers and just never really gave away information, but I digress.
I like the balance, angles, many widths on her head, forechest and gentle topline on this pup. I'd change some things also but we'll see how things come along.

Nearly two years ago, just a few days before Christmas, The JiNgLE BuLLs arrived to entertain the world. You've heard news up to yer eyeballs about the JiNgLe BuLLy Boy, Gabe...and, you've may have heard bits & pieces about the Other White WonderBull, Moxie--but there was ONE MORE WhiTey from WiNteRs PaSt...
Some of you will remember "Smooches", the third member of The JiNgLe BuLL litter... (for those who don't...or who would like a little peek at her bully babydom--here's some BLaSt-fRoM-De-PaSt photos)
Smooches went to live with a retired dentist & his wife here in town, just a short distance away from where she was born, & is now known as "Meg". Last week I had a chance to go visit Meg & her family & take some new photos!
Meg is quite the "Daddy's Girl" these days, which is no surprise--she was always drawn to Mart & The Boys when she was a tiny tyke.
Much more "feminine" than her BiG MoOSe BRoTheR, Gabe, Meg has developed into a nice, standard young ladybull (we MAY be bringing her out in the breed ring in the coming months if all goes well)
This little gal had QUiTE the adventure recently & it's a major miracle that she is still with us! It seems she had just arrived home after being out for a ride with her Dad one day, & as he opened his door, she suddenly spied a dog walking by out on the road & lickety-split jumped over Dad, out of the truck & raced into the road to greet the passerby!
As rotten luck would have it a car came by right at that moment & our little gal was run over!!! YiKES!!! With the Dogwalker & The Car Driver crying, and Dad frantically calling, Meg took off & was nowhere to be found. After searching for some time, it was suggested that possibly she'd snuck back into the house to find a safe spot...they looked, and sure enough, there she was cowering next to Dad's computer...a dirty white dog, with no obvious injury other than a small cut on her lip where her tooth had bumped it! They rushed her into the vet, where she was thoroughly checked over & monitored for a couple hours. Fortunately, they came to the conclusion that she was fine, albeit a very sore puppy for several days! Whew!
Anyway, Meg continues to delight her family & all she meets as a Top Notch BuLLY AmBaSSaDoR!
Be sure to stop by & watch BiG BRo. Gabie's America's Funniest Video today & cast your FiVE SMiLeY vote for him at the link below! Pass it on, too & spread the FuN!
BTW--if you have trouble getting the video to play, just hit refresh & it will get it going! (we almost always have to do this to get it to play )
I was very pleased with how she'd matured since I'd last seen her. Now that you've all added your encouragement to back me, I'll have to seriously consider bringing her out in the coming year. She's a nice, standard package, too--probably weighing around 48#. She'll need some work/training, though as she's a spoiled little princess around her new home! The pix I took were free stacked--she stayed fairly well when I told her to stay & was able to snap the pix...didn't much like to be "messed with", though!

Quote from Wayne Pacelle: (President of the Humane Society of the United
States,
former Executive Director of Fund for Animals)
"We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals. They are
creations of human selective breeding."
When Wayne said that he didn't know someday he'd be president of HSUS.
HSUS has no affiliation with local humane societies and is the largest
"animal rights" organization in the world. Coming soon to the Texas State
Legislature with an all encompassing "Puppy Mill, Pet Sales and Puppy Lemon
Law" Bill, if they find a sponsor. With assets of $225 million, there's no
doubt they'll succeed. Texas Humane Legislation Network is already selling
the T-Shirts.
So with CA's chickens under their belt, it's on to Texas with their anti-pet
agenda to end all breeding and eventually ownership of pets. Just follow
their national legislative trail.

Humane Society chief seeks animal-rights focus in D.C.
http://www.sacbee.com/capitolandcalifornia/story/1432980.html

Few political groups have been as successful in recent years at shaping
state policies as the Humane Society of the United States under Wayne
Pacelle.
Now that the nation's largest animal rights group has effectively banned the
caging of egg-laying hens in California, it is turning its focus to
Washington.
A week after voters here overwhelmingly approved Proposition 2, Pacelle
called on the Humane Society's 10 million-plus members "to build on the
momentum of that landmark outcome."
In e-mails, the group's executive director urged "friends" to send a message
to President-elect Barack Obama urging him to "consider animal protection a
priority when appointing his secretary of agriculture."
Past secretaries, he said, have been "too closely aligned with industry, and
now it is time to appoint a secretary who balances economic concerns with
animal welfare, consumer safety, and environmental protection."
Since taking over the nation's largest animal advocacy group four years ago
after a decade as its chief spokesman and director of government affairs,
Pacelle - a glib, photogenic vegan - has continued the organization's
transformation.
No longer does it just look out for dogs and cats; it's a political power
whose clout Pacelle believes one day will rival the National Rifle
Association.
"We have the potential to be one of the most powerful forces in politics,"
Pacelle says.
In 2008, the Humane Society shepherded through 88 new state animal welfare
laws and capped off the year with its crowning achievement, Proposition 2.
Under Pacelle, the Humane Society has stepped up its fundraising and doubled
its assets to nearly $225 million.
But critics accuse the organization, which turns to voters when it is
defeated by farmers in state legislatures, of advancing a radical agenda at
the polls.
"They're seeing more success with ballot measures than legislatively," said
Julie Buckner, a spokeswoman for the No on Proposition 2 campaign, which was
funded by egg producers. "The ag industry has some clout, but not
necessarily with voters."
Pacelle - who is compensated with a $207,000 annual salary and a generous
benefits package - counters that the Humane Society is merely exercising the
"mainstream ethos" of its members, who live in every community in the
nation.
"We're not telling people to become vegetarians - we're urging them to
exhibit greater decency," he said.
In February, a hidden-camera video recorded by the group showed cows being
abused at a San Bernardino County slaughterhouse and led to the largest meat
recall by federal officials in history.
But it is at the ballot box that the Humane Society has made its most
sweeping mark, aided by an army of committed volunteers.
Since 1990, when the organization worked on a ballot measure that banned the
hunting of mountain lions for sport in California, it has taken on more than
two dozen statewide measures and amassed an enviable record.
"We've had the highest rate of success of any kind of cause or constituency,
winning about 75 percent for all the ballot measures we've run," Pacelle
said.
By comparison, between 1940 and 1990, animal rights advocates were involved
in only about a half dozen ballot measures and prevailed in only one
campaign.
"The conventional wisdom coming into the 1990s was that opponents had too
much money and resources, and they could confuse and push people to vote for
them," Pacelle said.
After the mountain lion measure passed in California, the Humane Society
began running ballot measures throughout the nation.
Its victories have included bans on hunting bears with bait in Colorado,
Oregon and Washington; same-day airborne hunting of wolves and foxes in
Alaska; and cockfighting in Arizona, Missouri and Oklahoma.
In a match pitting political titans, the Humane Society beat the National
Rifle Association in Michigan, where it banned the hunting of mourning
doves.
Measures the group has run in California have banned the use of
indiscriminate traps and poisons as well as the slaughter of horses and sale
of horse meat for human consumption.
After banning the use of gestation crates and veal crates for livestock in
Arizona in 2006, the Humane Society this year turned its attention to
California.
When Proposition 2 takes effect in 2015, it will prohibit farmers from
confining egg-laying hens, gestating pigs and calves in cages that severely
restrict their normal movements.
There is little veal production in California, and farmers have voluntarily
phased out confining sows in breeding crates, so the measure will apply
primarily to egg-laying hens.
Farmers predict the cost of the new law will drive egg production out of the
state - an argument Pacelle doesn't buy.
Moreover, he believes the federal government should follow California's
lead.
With oversight of the federal Animal Welfare Act and the Humane Methods of
Slaughter Act, Pacelle believes the next agriculture secretary can have a
big impact.
"The federal government can stipulate that animals raised for food cannot be
confined for the entirety of their lives in tight cages," he said, noting
European Union nations are phasing out the practice.
Obama has not indicated who will run the Department of Agriculture. But
among the names that have been mentioned are former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack;
Tom Buis, president of National Farmers Union; and John Boyd Jr., president
of National Black Farmers Association.
Tracy Grondine, a spokeswoman for the American Farm Bureau, said it would be
"too short-sighted to pick someone based on one issue such as animal
rights."
"The ag secretary has many things under his or her purview," she said. "I
think it's important to have industry knowledge as well."

It's hard to believe TWO whole years has already flown by. She is still as goofy as she was at two months!
Happy birthday to her two brothers and her mighty sister, Gracie (4 ounces to 40 pounds at 2). And the best part is...I am so much more rested than I was two years ago at this time of night!

...home thru the traffic and the Missouri ice storm. By 3 am we had all the dogs settled in and we collapsed. So now comes the laundry.. dog and people (ugh!!), the unpacking and all the rest.
I think you know by now if you were there what a FABULOUS National this was. I don't think I would have changed a thing! Thank you to the committee for all of their hard work!
It was wonderful seeing all of our old friends and making new ones!
We had nearly 40 bulldogs (plus a Fwenchie or two) participate in the health clinic! WAY TO GO!!
Thank you Naomi, Jennifer and Lorraine for helping man the table, and to Stacy and Tim for filling in when they needed the break.
We had a great time with the dogs too. Captain Cupcake won a 4 point major at the pre-National Specialty under Tony Darmanin from England, plus a 3rd in Sweeps, a second on National day (to the eventual WD)and 2 more first place wins.
Eskimo Joe came away with a second on National day, a first the second day and made the 5-dog cut on the last day from the 6-9 class.
Venus won second on National day and 3rd the last day in the open class.
Ritchie and Helen won 4th the second day plus had class wins at the pre-National shows.
Plus we now have two new babies! Pictures coming soon!
Pooch won an Award of Merit, our kennel's 8th! Plus she made the final cut all the other days. We think "not too shabby" considering the well noted quality of bitches at this years's event.
While some people think if you don't win you have lost, we are exceedingly proud of the fact that we have been so competative at that level so many times.
We also tend to cherish the comments of our fellow exhibitors. Thank you to everyone who had such nice things to say about our dogs. We are pretty excited about Pooch and Cupcake too!
Plus we got to see her portrait for the first time! She is now in the National gallery with our beautiful Daisey.
And here is Pooch!

I would like to say THANK YOU to all of the committee chairs, members and our children for the tremendous amount of work in the prior months and the actual show week. We all came together as a team and worked hard to make this show week a huge success. Well laid out plans are great but if you don't have the manpower to back the plan it's no good. We were very lucky to have the man power and without the individuals that worked their butts off for this show week it wouldn't have been such a great success. I am very proud to be a part of that team that made the 2008 BCA Nationals a week to remember for a very long time!
Even the hotel was impressed and said they would welcome us back tomorrow with no regrets!
The rescue parade was amazing, the room was packed with people and slide show was wonderful!! We raised almost $1,400 for rescue prior to the parade and more money was raised during the parade itself.
Congrats to all of the winners and placements and Thank you for supporting our show week!
for sharing the link. It was wonderful to look over all of the wins. There surely was some amazing competition there! I wish I could have seen it with my own eyes.
