Nationals deadlines are fast approaching..

by

With less than 60 days before the start of the 2009 BCA National Show, we
have two deadlines that are quickly approaching:

Trophy Donations, to be listed as a donor for a specific trophy donation
the cut off is Sept. 30. Trophy donations will be gladly accepted after
this date, but cannot guarantee that the donor will be listed in the
catalog. You can still make trophy donations on the web site.

Catalog Ads, all catalog ads must be to Dean Dickey by Sept. 30

These are both hard deadlines and cannot be extended.

There has been some question as to transportation to and from the airport.
When flying into the Kansas City International Airport (MCI) we are
recommending that you make your transportation needs through Super Shuttle
(800) 258-3826. The Westin Crown Center Hotel is 20.5 miles from the
airport. The cost of the shuttle is $17 each way or prepaid r/t is $29.

We also would like to remind everyone bringing dogs to the show that the
following rules will be strictly enforced. There are to be no more than
FOUR DOGS PER ROOM. There are to be NO DOGS UNDER SIX MONTHS OF AGE AT THE
WESTIN HOTEL.

For those that have yet to make hotel reservations, there are still rooms
available. There are currently no double bed rooms available for Sat.
Nov.21st. There is another large block of rooms for another group on that
date. We expect these type rooms to be available after the closing date for
the entries for the show. Check back after that date.

For questions contact Dean Dickey at deandickey@att.net">deandickey@att.net
or Mike Otten at mikeotten@remax.net">mikeotten@remax.net.

The 2009 BCA National Show Committee looks forward to seeing everyone soon

> BREEDERS RED ALERT AUGUST 18, 2009
> URGENT URGENT URGENT URGENT URGENT URGENT URGENT URGENT
> DFOW has just been notified by a very credible source that between now
and just after legislators go back into session floor periods (September 15,
2009), the Humane Society of the United States will be orchestrating a breeder
bust.
> If you have been listed in a breeder directory, have shown your dogs or
have advertised a litter in any publication in the last nine years you must be
on your guard at all times. Do not allow anyone into your home without a search
warrant. In the State of Wisconsin, Animal Control officers and HSUS do not have
police powers. They must be accompanied by law enforcement (although some law
enforcement officers are also animal control officers) with a search warrant in
order to enter your premises.
> If HSUS is working in conjunction with law enforcement and there is a
search warrant, you must cooperate.
> DO NOT SIGN OVER ANY OF YOUR DOGS if threatened.
> Do not believe those that state that the charges against you20will be
lessened if you sign over your dogs.
> Video tape the entire proceedings.
> If you are detained asking questions while a search is going on, have
another individual available to video tape or photograph the proceedings.
> Ask for proof of identification.
> Get names and license plate numbers for those coming onto your property.
> Some breeders have had to get special permits in order to have more than
the arbitrary number of allowed animals in their community and have had to waive
their constitutional rights in order to get those permits. If you are in this
situation, you must contact a lawyer and find out what your rights are TODAY.
> If animal control or law enforcement come to your door, walk out of your
door and shut it behind you. Do not allow them to enter your home you go out to
them unless they have a search warrant.
> Please read the article What to do when animal control comes knocking
http://www.dpca. org/BreedEd/ when_animal_ control_comes. htm for more details.
> If anything seems amiss, make notes of dates and times, take names, get
witness names, what they did, take photos, and keep a log of suspicious
activities. We often hear fanciers state that this issue will never affect me
when it comes to breeder licensing legislation. There have been at least 4
situations that have already happened in OUR STATE since the beginning of the
year=2 0and breeder licensing requirements have not yet been passed into law.
> The orchestrated bust that we were warned about today could very well be
targeted at any one of us. You must protect yourself against false accusations.
This is a very serious situation. If you truly believe in preserving the future
of your chosen breed or breeds, you must do everything in your power to protect
those breeds and their heritage. Insist on the preservation of your
constitutional rights.

> 10 Best Places to Live for Pet Lovers
> Green spaces and good weather make petsand their ownershappy
> By Kimberly Palmer
> Posted August 17, 2009
> For the 4 in 10 American families that own at least one dog, choosing a
place to live isn't just about the humans in the family: They want their pets to
be happy, too. For dog owners, cities with lots of dog parks and open green
spaces, as well as relativel y mild temperatures, mean their pooches can stay in
shape more easily. Cat owners, as well as those who live with more unusual pets,
such as rabbits or birds, usually want to make sure their area has enough
veterinarians to care for their animals. And all pet lovers can be affected by
local and state regulations that specify where their pets are allowed and what
type of vaccines they need.
> [Slide Show: 10 Best Places to Live for Pet Lovers.]
> That's why we focused on weather, population density, and the
availability of green space when creating our top 10 list for the best places to
live for pet lovers. After narrowing down the field based on those factors, we
interviewed pet experts on the most animal-friendly towns. Len Kain, cofounder
of DogFriendly.com, says he first looks at the availability of dog parks as well
as major attractions that allow pets. "Can you take your dogs to outdoor
concerts? Drive-in movie theaters? Outdoor malls? These are all important issues
to travelers and the people who live there," he says.
> Some spots that appear pet friendly at first glance, such as San
Francisco or Seattle, have limited pet-friendly housing, Kain adds. "Places with
expensive housing tend to be more restrictive with pet housing," he says.
> Kain also warns that local laws and regulations, which frequently
change, can make life tough for pet owners. Some cities, such as Jackson, Wyo.,
have strict no-dog policies in many of their parks, and dog beaches in Los
Angeles are virtually impossible to find. On the Maryland and Delaware coasts,
on the other hand, there are dog-friendly beaches for anyone who purchases a
relatively inexpensive permit. New York's laws have been slowly shifting in
favor of allowing dogs on beaches, Kain says. Rocky Point, N.Y., on the shore of
the Long Island Sound, allows dogs during less popular hours: before 10 a.m. and
after 6 p.m. in the summer and anytime during the winter. (They must be kept on
a leash.)
> Vicki Kung, cofounder of www.dogpark.com, says that as the exurbs expand
away from cities, smaller cities and towns are gaining more dog parks. "Dog park
advocates are no longer the lunatic fringe of community recreation resource
users. There20are so many cities that now support dog parks that community
groups are having an easier time pointing to success stories and benefits," she
says. California and Florida have been leaders in the creation of dog parks, she
adds, while Idaho, Montana, and many of the southern states have been catching
up. Butte, Mont., offers plenty of hiking trails on nearby mountain paths for
dog owners.
> For anyone with multiple pets or pet-related businesses, Kain recommends
living within at least 100 miles of a large veterinary center, usually found at
universities, in case pets need specialized care. The University of
California-Davis and the University of Florida-Gainesville both have such
centers.
> Rabbit owner Adam Goldfarb, director of the pets at risk program for the
Humane Society of the United States, says it's also important for owners of less
common animals to make sure they have access to veterinary resources. He prefers
living in a location with more than one rabbit vet, for e xample. That kind of
information can be found on animal society Web sites, such as the House Rabbits
Society or the Association of Avian Veterinarians.
> Animal lovers looking to adopt pets from their homes also have plenty of
options. Goldfarb says that rural areas, particularly those in the South, tend
to have the most animals in need of homes, as do large urban ones, such as
Baltimore and Detroit. Ellicott City, Md., is an easy drive from Baltimore's
animal shelters and also offers more than 100 square miles of green space within
15 miles of the city.
> Check out these top 10 places for pet lovers to live:
> Ellicott City, Md.
> Rocky Point, N.Y.
> Auburn, Ala.
> Butte, Mont.
> Yankton, S.D.
> Lewiston, Idaho
> Glasgow, Ky.
> Aiken, S.C.
> Flower Mound, Texas

Cass Sunstein Senate Confirmation...

by

September 11, 2009
RPOA is nonpartisan and our only concern is animal issues at all levels of government.
We regret that more emphasis hasn't been placed on the effect the Cass Sunstein appointment by President Obama will have on animal/pet ownership. HSUS and ASPCA have been trying for years to get incremental changes in the
Animal Welfare Act as a forerunner to eventually end pet breeding (all species) in the US. Remember PAWS, the misnamed "Pet Animal Welfare Statute" that was defeated? Failing in that attempt, these extremists have
taken their agenda to state legislatures and our cities.

Consumer Group: Senate Confirmation of Animal-Rights Activist Cass Sunstein Will Have Hidden Costs

New "Regulatory Czar" Threatens To Nudge America Toward Vegetarianism,Loony Lawsuits

WASHINGTON--This afternoon the United States Senate confirmed the nomination of Cass Sunstein to head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in the Obama White House. The confirmation came after three different senators placed procedural "holds" on Sunstein's nomination, and only succeeded after a highly unusual cloture vote on
the Senate floor late yesterday. Sunstein is a self-described believer in the philosophy of "animal rights." He has argued that sport hunting should be illegal, that meat-eating should be rare, and that animals should have the right to sue human beings in courts of law.

Today David Martosko, Director of Research at the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom, issued the following statement:

The judicious and ethical use of animals is woven into practically every part of the American experience, and Mr. Sunstein's confirmation is a sad indication that radical ideology can trump our way of life.
Sunstein embraces the fringe belief that animals are people, and people are animals. Now that his philosophy can inform government policy, Americans who raise animals for food, hunters and fishermen-and even cancer researchers who use lab animals-could find their work prohibitively expensive or a red-tape nightmare.

Cass Sunstein perfectly represents a segment of society that wants to exercise as much control over ordinary Americans as possible: control over what we eat, what we drive, how we stay healthy, and even which doctors we can afford. Our personal freedoms shouldn't be subject to the
whims of a political 'czar' who gets his values from a PETA website.

The Congressional Research Service reports that between 1968 and 2006, only 54 judicial and executive nominees-out of many thousands-needed a cloture vote to escape the objections of U.S. Senators. Majority Leader Harry Reid's use of this tactic is a good indication of just how radical Cass Sunstein's views are, and how far out of step animal-rights dogma is with ordinary Americans.

Vote Scheduled for Sunstein as Regulatory Czar! Please Contact YOUR Senator!!

by

September 9, 2009
A vote is scheduled today according to National Rifle Association, US Sportsmen't Alliance and Consumer Freedom regarding the appointment of Cass Sunstein as Regulatory Czar for President Obama.
Sunstein is an "animal rights" extremists who opposes eating meat, gun ownership and wants legal rights for animals in the courts equal to humans.
This would mean the end of pet ownership and the breeding of animals for any reason in the US.
Please call your Texas senators and ask them to vote "No" to this appointment. We hear the White House phone lines have crashed so call their local offices if you can't get through.
If you receive this message too late for today, call tomorrow and ask how they voted!

Subject: LINK for SENATORS Phone #'s

Message from "U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance" below with more information on
their website:
Subject: Alert: Block The Czar Action Needed!

Last Call- Block the Czar- Action Needed Today! By now you should already be well aware of our effort to block President Obama's radical, animal rights supporting, anti-hunting "Regulatory Czar", Cass Sunstein. We've been asking sportsmen to contact BOTH of their U.S. senators for weeks. NOW is crunch time. It appears that the Senate will be taking up this nomination when they return to Washington, D.C. after Labor Day. This means there will likely be a vote as early as Wednesday, September 9. If you haven't made the calls yet to your senators, NOW is the time to do
it.Remember, this is a person who has written that animals should SUE HUMANS and that recreational hunting should be BANNED! These views are intolerable for someone to possess who will have control over all federal regulations.

A couple of Gabie Gals staying at MY house!

CKnGirls_m

Our very special friend "Auntie Jeanne"--who arranged for Gabe to get his two fancy new skateboards--has decided she needed to have a couple Gabie Babies of her own! She has graciously agreed to allow me to co-own the girls with her, and in a couple years we may be having some Gabie Grandbabies waddling around happy.gif

AnG.OnTheRun_m

Here's "SittingBullies Precious Angel Abby Rose", aka "Angel" (named in honor of several of Jeanne's special Rainbow Bridge Bullie Gals) This baby was formerly known as "Babe" and has the brindle tail patch.

Angel2.5moL_m

Interestingly, I discovered after Jeanne named her that this little girl has her own "Angel Wings" to fit perfectly with her new name! On each side, just behind her elbows is a unique hair swirl that looks like little "Baby Angel Wings" happy.gif

...and here's her sister, "SittingBullies Gabriella Grace", aka "Gabby" (formerly known as Bailey with the Appaloosa patch on her rump)...

The girls will be turning 3 months old this Thursday and they made themselves at home the moment they arrived! They'll be staying with us for the next month or so while Jeanne finishes up some remodeling work (just in time for them to tear it all apart, right! wink.gif

CA SB 250 Amended Bill is Fundamentally Flawed Californians Please Contact Your Reps.

by

http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=3941

Senator Florez has amended Senate Bill 250, but the changes do little to address AKCs fundamental concerns with the bill. It is imperative that California responsible dog owners and breeders immediately contact their Assemblymembers and Senators and ask them to oppose SB 250!!!

As expected, the bill now provides that an intact dog with a current intact license will not be required to be sterilized on a first offense. However, two violations may occur years apart and not be a true reflection of a habitually irresponsible owner. If a dog gets loose one time as a 6-month old puppy and is then accidentally released by a gardener 5 years later, that does not signify a problem animal.

The bill continues to prohibit an owner who has had one intact license revoked from owning any intact dog. If you have one problem animal who escapes twice you would be banned from ever owning an intact dog again! This is completely unreasonable.

Although the new amendments attempt to provide exemptions for working dogs, hunting dogs, guide dogs, signal dogs, service dogs, peace officer dogs and firefighter dogs, the bill language is not sufficient to truly exempt those animals. First, it is unclear how an owner would prove that their dog qualifies in one of these categories. Secondly, since most city and county licensing laws require that dogs wear the license tags, many will be unable to comply while performing their specified duties.

As one example, the amendment for field trial dogs requires that the owner have a current hunting license. Many field trailers choose to compete but may not actually hunt. The bill also fails to exempt other dog events such as agility, rally and obedience. It is unclear whether being within a competition ring is enough to keep a dog from being declared at-large.

SB 250 also requires anyone who sells an intact dog-regardless of the dogs age-to provide the licensing agency with the name and address of the new owner. It is not clear if the breeder is supposed to contact the licensing agency in their jurisdiction or the new owners jurisdiction. In Los Angeles County alone there are 51 incorporated cities (hence 52 licensing agencies, including the county) so it is unlikely that a breeder would sell a dog to an owner in the same jurisdiction. This is a burdensome requirement that will do nothing to improve the lives of dogs and cats in California.

This bill is currently on the Assembly floor and will likely be voted on in the next few days. If it passes the Assembly it will return to the Senate to enable the Senators to vote for or against the changes made in the Assembly. We would ask you to contact both your Assemblymember and Senator immediately!!

The American Kennel Club opposes Senate Bill 250 as it continues to use sterilization as a punishment for any violation of the animal control ordinance and for failure to license. Strict limit laws and unreasonably high license fees contribute significantly to peoples failure to license their animals and these issues should be examined in dealing with animal control issues in the state.

Finally, existing state law already requires that owners of intact animals pay a license fee that is at least double that of a sterilized animal (Food and Agriculture Code Section 30804.5); and provides for enhanced and graduated fines for owners whose intact dogs are impounded (Food and Agriculture Code Section 30804.7). These statutes are sufficient to incentivize owners to sterilize their animals and to address animal control concerns with specific intact animals who are impounded repeatedly.

This legislation will not improve the lives of cats and dogs, will negatively impact responsible owners and breeders. Additionally, by placing additional burdens on owners of intact animals, this measure may lead to an increase of animals in shelters. Concentrating animal control efforts on dogs whose behavior demonstrates that they are a problem for the community, regardless of their reproductive status, would be a much better use of taxpayer funds.

There has been some confusion as to how this would affect folks traveling to California from other states. Although you would be subject to local animal control ordinances such as pick-up ordinances and to state laws such as animal cruelty laws, the provisions of SB 250 relate specifically to licensing and only California residents would be required to have their dogs licensed.

What You Can Do

Contact your Assemblymember and Senator and ask him/her to oppose SB 250. A sample letter for you to personalize is available here. To find out who represents you in the California State Legislature, please click here.

*** GaBe's MoViE PoSteR 4U! ***

Someone on the crew had put together a few movie poster handouts with a photo of Gabe on set that was printed out in B&W to hand out to kids/people to tell them about the movie. Bonnie had told them to put a pawprint on the page & so they put a tiny graphic of a pawprint. Not too impressive.

I told Bonnie we could use the photo I'd taken of Gabe in his "Sonny Suit" & cut out the background, add his own pawprint (which we've got scanned into the computer) along with the title and we could use those. Well, I finally got around to doing it & I think it turned out pretty fun. The pawprint is pretty much actual size & IS his real pawprint--so you can have an "official" paw-to-graphed photo of "The Dogfather".

Here is the NeW improved version...

5.DogfatherPoster8x10_l

I have it in an 8x10 jpg file that can be printed out in color as a photo, or an 8.5x11 size that can be printed out in B&W and copied for inexpensive handouts on regular paper (or slightly heavier cardstock). If you'd like me to email you the file to print out for yourself or as a handout for friends, just email me @ sittingbullies@comcast.net & I'll send it to you.

Thanks again to all of our GaBeSteRoOTeRs for being so very supportive & encouraging us along the way!

on top of this. It's almost like a full time job. If only all of this money in the government were spent on something more appropriate for the time in which we are living.
