It's not regarding mandatory spay neuter specifically but the vagueness bugs me.
Anything to do with Hollywood is suspect and may/will be used against US.
You are asked yes or no then given a chance to say why. I said NO and then qualified it with "It's the right choice for many pets but not all and the decision should be left up to the owner and their vet not the city or state."
Please feel free to use this response or paraphrase it

I just received a phone call, informing that on the TV show, Judge Joe
Brown,
they asked the Question of the week...which is "Should dogs and cats be
spayed and neutered....Vote Yes or No.
Now, you know they are going to use the answers to support MSN, and that
is not what the voters are voting for!
The phone number to vote, and then give your reason (you'll have about
30 seconds before being cut off) is 1-888-775-8343. I called to
vote
NO...and said the question is misleading without further explanation about
what
they intend to do with the results.
I suggest everyone call and innundate them with similar votes and
reasons.

Mainstream Americans oppose laws and ordinances that mandate pet sterilization by an overwhelming margin, a pair of very recent polls by two of the nation’s largest publications show.
A March poll of the readers of Parade Magazine, America’s most widely read publication, shows that 91 percent of its readers oppose laws or ordinances that mandate spaying and neutering of pets.
A poll that began May 19 with a report by MSNBC, one of the nation’s largest news services, reiterates the Parade results. In three days of voting, 75 percent of the respondents to the MSNBC poll opposed laws that mandate pet sterilization.
Dallas and Chicago are considering these kinds of ordinances now, and statewide legislation is on the table in California and Arizona.
The American Sporting Dog Alliance asks elected officials to pay close attention to the results of these polls, which have great value because of the mainstream readership of Parade and MSNBC. The results show the opinions of ordinary people who are not part of any special interest group involved with this issue.
They are your friends, your neighbors and your family. They are the people who voted for you
Officials are being bombarded with political pressure from animal rights groups to pass mandatory sterilization ordinances and laws, as well as with reams of contradictory information. Mainstream polls help to cut to the heart of the issue, by informing public officials about the opinions of the electorate.
Parade is both the highest circulation magazine in America and also the most mainstream, having built an empire as a Sunday supplement to more than 400 newspapers and attracting a reported 71 million readers a week. If elected officials want to know what will “play in Peoria,” Parade is Peoria. It’s readers are ordinary people from all walks of life, and do not represent any special interest group. They are your neighbors and constituents.
The magazine published an article about mandatory spay and neuter laws in its March 16, 2008, issue, following enactment of an ordinance in Los Angeles. A poll accompanied the article with the following question: “Should owners be required to sterilize their pets?”
There were 50,577 responses to the Parade poll:
91% voted no (45,824 votes)
9% voted yes (4,753 votes)
MSNBC is the nation’s third largest media/news conglomerate, after CNN and Fox. It averages 300,000 viewers for each newscast, and has a very large online readership.
Thus far, 4,212 people have voted:
23% voted in favor of mandatory pet sterilization
75% voted against mandatory pet sterilization
1.7% were undecided
The American Sporting Dog Alliance asks everyone who reads this report to send it to the elected officials who represent you in your city, town, township, county and state. It is urgent that we let them know what the vast majority of the voters think about this issue.
We also hope you will send this report to all of your friends, and cross-post it on message boards.
The American Sporting Dog Alliance works to protect the rights of dog owners and professionals who own or work with breeds that are used for hunting. Our grassroots movement is based on independent research, investigative reporting, getting the word out to hundreds of thousands of dog owners and elected officials, and giving people a way to take direct action as citizens. OK I have a 13 month old puppy that was in heat the end of January...It took her well over a month to go out..NOW shes back in heat again..Could she have been pulled in early because all my other bitches have been in heat or pregnant??
I have been told to put her on check drops for 6 months to regulate her..What are everyones thoughts on this??

4 months is actually the lowest "accepted normal" interval in between heat cycles. (This is coming form the premier breeding specialist in No Cali Dr Cain)...the repro specialist not the GP vets that everyone thinks of as specialists Do not put her on the cheque drops unless it is necessary. I just don't believe in hormone supplementation, unless you were trying to KEEP her out. I would just track her and see if she comes in again in 4 months. (We have one that comes in every four months but has also absorbed her last pregnancy)

happened with Holly. She came in the first time at 11 months, and then she came in again a week after her mom. That was only four months later....AND we missed a dog show because of it (she was traveling with a boy).

Had to share some week-end brags from Gabe's littermate, Moxie (SittingBullies Wildwood Mockingbird, CGC--soon to add RN, CD, & NAP!)
I just heard from Bea that she and Moxie had a very busy, but successful week-end of obedience and agiity showing. Moxie earned her first two legs towards her Novice Agility Preferred title, along with two FIRST placements AND, then, rushed into the Novice OB ring to earn her first CD leg, winning a run-off for 4th place!
(I don't have any more recent pix of our girl, but these were from a couple months ago)
Moxie passed her Canine Good Citizen test at 5 mos., has one breed point from her only week-end out in the breed ring, two Rally Novice legs, two Novice Agility Preferred legs and one CD leg...and she's just getting started! The NAP is the class we were talking about last week Patti--with a few extra seconds allowed and lower jump heights--Bea plans on pursuing the coveted MACH title with Moxie if all goes well, and that one will have to be done from the regular classes)
Here's an ad Bea had me put together for the next Bulldogger...
...yes, Bea & Moxie are realizing many of those hopes & dreams already and we're proud of them!
And one last one of Gabe & his sister, Moxie from a little over a year ago! Can you believe how far they've come already?

and deservingly so. That is so awesome. I'm sure that Moxie is going to rack up the awards. Going to be interesting, Moxie vs Gabe, west coast - east coast.

The only time I ran a dog thru an agility course was before it was AKC accepted, and it was at a show in Utah, where the agility club had set a course up and for a minimal donation you ran your dog thru it. Tuffy did fantastic, better than the shephards and other dogs. One of the locals asked me to do it again the next day and she brought a video camera and filmed it. If I remember, that A-Frame was much more steep and seemed a bit highter. Tuffy loved it. Only problem I had was him jumping thru the tire. He just couldn't understand what I wanted, when it was just as easy to go around it.
Posted on May 27, 2008, 7:03 PM from IP address 207.200.116.135
in the photos and is probably about 4' off the ground (I'm not sure of the standard height...this is one that Bea has on her property for practice) The A frame is the steep incline going up to a peak, then steep decline (shaped like the letter "A") and in competition the A frame is set quite steep. The dog is required to touch the contact zones on each side of it, so they can't just leap off and injure themselves.
Like I said, I've only taken a couple classes and don't know all of the ins and outs yet When a dog is first learning they have everything set low and a more gradual angle. It really looks like fun--another thing to try one of these days! (I know once I get out there, I'll get the bug!)
As for Moxie vs. Gabe--I'm sure she's going to go to much further lengths in agility as that is Bea's favorite dog sport. I think she does hope to get her utility title in obedience, her rally titles, breed championship and tracking. Yes, it IS pretty fun to have your babies go to homes where they can reach their potential in every way!

The following was information in our daily "on-line" newsletter we get at work (Postal Service). Thought the information was interesting, with Houston being the worse in the country, with other cities in CA next. If these are just dog bites to Postal employees, then think how many other dog bites there are. Since there is so much going on about dog legislation being considered, perhaps some of these places need to look closer about their existing leash laws, owner responsibilities, etc. It is easy to see when there are these kind of statistics that make the news, why the general public easily agrees to laws being submitted by the AR.
>>>
DOG DAYS IN HOUSTON. The Postal Service kicked off National Dog Bite Prevention Week with an event in Houston — the district that produced the most dog bites in 2007. “We went from 96 dog bites in Houston in 2006 to 103 last year,” said Delores Killette, vice president and consumer advocate. “You could say, ‘Houston, we have a problem.’” Killette and other speakers wanted the public to know the impact dog bites have on individuals — and letter carriers in particular. Speakers at the event also shared tips on how to avoid dog bites. Last year, more than 3,000 letter and rural carriers were attacked by dogs across the nation. National Dog Bite Prevention Week is May 18-24.
Last year, the district with carriers suffering the most dog bites was Houston (103), followed by Santa Ana (86), Sacramento (82), Los Angeles (71) and Big Valley (69).

Yes, Sheezam's litter last summer had Lacey and Maggie that looked like twins. Only thing, at about 4 months or so, they started changing in size, with Maggie much smaller. I kept Lacey. Saw Maggie last week, and she has turned out very nice, and the right size, whereas Lacey is a bigger girl, like her mom.
I guess my females want to make it easier for me with small litters....lol. If you breed to one of my males, you'll get a BIG litter. The last litter sired by one of my boys, Boss, was 10 pups.

WD – (4 pt major) NEW CHAMPION
Little Ponds Gold Rush
Breeders: Daniel Karshner & Liz Karshner
Owner: Dr Max Bracho Wolf
Friday under judge Nancy Harrison, a bitch I was showing "Nessie" for Barb Scully went WB/BW for a 4 point major.
My puppy SureShot White Lightning at his first show won Best Puppy
Today under judge Jean Hetherington, my Puppy SureShot White Lightning went RWD to a major, and then went on to win Best Puppy.
And the bitch "Nessie" I was showing went WB/BW and BB for a 5 point major. (I did do a hand off in Breed, as my little Champion bitch yesterday was more worried about where I was) so the sire's owner handled her into the Breed win.
So ...it has been a pretty good weekend.

Cheryl, I've had some questions about these performance events.
How exactly are they scored. Isn't part of it time? If so, how can a bully compete against some of the faster dogs? They can perform everything perfect, no errors, but how can some end up with a top score when speed comes into the picture?
I know that jumps and such are changed per the dog's size. But, even another dog the same height of a Bulldog will probably run like greased lightning.
I've just always had these questions, hope you can help explain it better, to me and others.
Posted on May 24, 2008, 11:27 AM from IP address 207.200.116.135
only comes into play when there is a tie score for placements...and would you believe that Gabe has BEAT the "faster" breeds EVERY time he's had a tie (which has been about three times so far!) A lot of the speed is dependant on the handler and knowing the course, running it smoothly. I have always moved out quickly with my bullies, and time is not a problem for them!
Rally is judged much more leniently than regular OB--obviously with only 100 possible points and a minimum of 70 points required for a leg. Much, much easier than OB--and, you can re-do a station if you didn't get it right the first time. If you've done formal OB, this is a walk in the park! You just need to take advantage of the "walk-through" prior to the class and know the signs/rules. There are lots of points off for a station done incorrectly (and sometimes this can be a simple thing like finishing to the wrong side...or having your dog sit at the end of the exercise when it didn't have a "Halt" command at the end, etc.)
It's pretty fun! And, it seems that it's a pretty equal playing field out there!
Posted on May 24, 2008, 4:28 PM from IP address 76.28.212.3
OK, I understand Rally. But, for agility, isn't it really tough for a Bulldog to have top scores because I've watched so many on TV, and those darn border collies and such just FLY. No way can a bully be close in time. I can see where a Bully can perform it perfect, no points off or misses. But time wise, there needs to be a "handicap" system, for dogs like bulldogs and bassett hounds vs shelties and border collies!
Posted on May 24, 2008, 4:32 PM from IP address 207.200.116.135
sometimes the faster dog, is more likely to mess up, miss a contact, etc. Faster is NOT always best! Also, they now have the "preferred" catagory to balance things out for our heavier breeds
In rally, you get a lot more "unpolished" competitors--and a lot more breed variations. I haven't actually seen very many goldens or border collies out there. Most of those are focusing on regular OB--they may get the rally titles, but not continue on, just get the basics done.
Gabe has placed every time in rally--and he's yet to have a perfect score. It doesn't always work that way. Sometimes you'll have a four-way tie with 100 pts. Just depends on who's out there working on their titles when you are. But a bully is fully capable of earning a perfect 100 score AND getting a nice time. You are NOT allowed to go "fast" when there's not a command to do so and you'll be penalized if you do. Just keeping a nice, steady pace, with a dog who responds fairly promptly will get you a decent score & time to be among the competition
Posted on May 24, 2008, 4:42 PM from IP address 76.28.212.3
also allows more time to complete the course, as well as much lower jumps. I have always been concerned with jumping our heavy bulldogs repeatedly over and over and over those jumps that are pretty high--once or twice in OB is not bad, but in an agility course with all those turns, etc. don't know how many would hold up. Of course you want your bully in GREAT shape and NOT overweight to be able to be at peak athletic condition.
I have not yet competed in agility--just taken a couple classes and talked with folks in the bully performance group who have. But, from what I understand, the "preferred" classes were designed to accommodate dogs such as our breed. They can earn all of the same titles, but but have the letter "P" added to it to distinguish it. (ie "NAP" rather than just "NA" for Novice Agility Preferred/Novice Agility)
Posted on May 24, 2008, 4:48 PM from IP address 76.28.212.3
I didn't now there was a class called "preferred". So, is it certain breeds that then qualify for that class?
Just you see in the AKC Gazette and other things the top dogs for agility, or the National competition, etc, and of course, it seems to be sheltie, border collies, some smaller terriers, etc. But you don't see a Bulldog, Bassett or something like a St. Bernard. So I figured it was the "time' that made them non-competitive for the big stuff.
Posted on May 24, 2008, 4:56 PM from IP address 207.200.116.135
I think that any breed can do preferred, but I'm not sure. Some people start out in preferred, then go on to get the regular title as well. Some do it if they have an older or younger dog...or a breed like ours that you don't want to jump excessively.

You don't see me professing my love for Scarlett Johansson on the board do you? I guess if PDA's "public displays of affection" is your thing.
Happy Anniversary and many more to come! May you guys grow old and gray together!

Our family lost our English Bulldog last night May 22nd in Vancouver in the area of Fourth Plain and Andressen off of Burton road. His name is Hardy he is Fawn(redish brown) and White, He weighs 65 pounds has distinguishable eyes from a cherry eye surgery and has a limp in his right back leg, he is an intact male English BullDog. Our family is devistated from him missing, he is a big part of our family and we miss him terribly. My wife and kids won't stop crying so if you are sheltering him or have any information as to his whereabouts it would be greatly appreciated if you could let us know.

Had to share the fun "promo" that our Bully Performance Group did in the national performance magazine, Front & Finish.
As I'd shared in a previous post, we had intended on taking out a full-page B&W ad inside the magazine announcing titles earned by bulldogs, and I had put one together with the above four dogs in the background, with dogs/titles over the photos. The editor liked it so much, he offered us the color cover (shown above) AND two inside color pages.
Here is the inside back cover page...
...and the titles page (they apparently used the B&W version here, but it still gets the point across!)
...Next month's issue will feature a story of me & my bullies in the NW news section--a couple pages, including several of my photos. I don't think the performance world will look at bulldogs as "dumb, stubborn, lazy & independent", as they have in the past after seeing these next couple of issues!

Go check out our link at BulldogPerformance.org and you'll get an overview of all the various events...I'd recommend starting out with rally novice--you can give several commands, retry stations, talk to and encourage your dog, etc. GOOD for you! It's a LOT of fun and very rewarding...and bullies are a very SMART breed! Good luck...there is going to be a great rally & OB entry at this year's nationals!

Hopefully all the people that instruct obedience get and read this, because the problem is so many of them don't think Bulldogs can do this. Our AKC obedience club here in LV has had "good" instructors that like bullies, and "bad" instructors that think you are wasting your time with a Bulldog, and ignore you in the class and always use and point out the shelties and border collies.
For a newbie, that is very discouraging and why many I've known over the years drop out of the class.
Posted on May 23, 2008, 8:54 AM from IP address 207.200.116.135
I would think most of them subscribe to it. Many of them write columns for the mag. There are several of our top working bulldogs who work with some of these top trainers and they are very much respected...though, sometimes the techniques that work for other breeds don't work for bullies Nowadays, the "motivational" training is what's popular, so bullies are doing well with it. There are lots more bulldogs getting involved in performance thanks to rally--and you can look for several more bullies earning those advanced titles in the coming years, too!
