HAPPY ANNIVERSARY my friends!

by Jaime Gerdes

Congratulations on another year well lived!

Let me tell you a little something.... I was trying to figure out when your anniversary was a while back. I was looking at old posts, etc. I got confused because you didn't get married when you were originally going to. Anyhow, now I know. Have a fabulous day!!!

NOT! Excuse me while I toss my Memorial Weekend cookies! Couldn't you communicate this to Edgar directly? You guys only live in the same house. Or maybe text message him on the way to the store? You don't see me professing my love for Scarlett Johansson on the board do you? I guess if PDA's "public displays of affection" is your thing.

Happy Anniversary and many more to come! May you guys grow old and gray together!

Lost English Bull Dog
Reply to: TrishaPickles@comcast.net
Date: 2008-05-23, 3:02PM

Our family lost our English Bulldog last night May 22nd in Vancouver in the area of Fourth Plain and Andressen off of Burton road. His name is Hardy he is Fawn(redish brown) and White, He weighs 65 pounds has distinguishable eyes from a cherry eye surgery and has a limp in his right back leg, he is an intact male English BullDog. Our family is devistated from him missing, he is a big part of our family and we miss him terribly. My wife and kids won't stop crying so if you are sheltering him or have any information as to his whereabouts it would be greatly appreciated if you could let us know.

Had to share the fun "promo" that our Bully Performance Group did in the national performance magazine, Front & Finish.

FrontNFinishCover_l

As I'd shared in a previous post, we had intended on taking out a full-page B&W ad inside the magazine announcing titles earned by bulldogs, and I had put one together with the above four dogs in the background, with dogs/titles over the photos. The editor liked it so much, he offered us the color cover (shown above) AND two inside color pages.

Here is the inside back cover page...

FnFSeeingIsBelieving_l

...and the titles page (they apparently used the B&W version here, but it still gets the point across!)

FnFBullyPerformanceText_l

...Next month's issue will feature a story of me & my bullies in the NW news section--a couple pages, including several of my photos. I don't think the performance world will look at bulldogs as "dumb, stubborn, lazy & independent", as they have in the past after seeing these next couple of issues!

Cheryl, that is awesome

by

Hopefully all the people that instruct obedience get and read this, because the problem is so many of them don't think Bulldogs can do this. Our AKC obedience club here in LV has had "good" instructors that like bullies, and "bad" instructors that think you are wasting your time with a Bulldog, and ignore you in the class and always use and point out the shelties and border collies.

For a newbie, that is very discouraging and why many I've known over the years drop out of the class.

Yes, they would get this...

I would think most of them subscribe to it. Many of them write columns for the mag. There are several of our top working bulldogs who work with some of these top trainers and they are very much respected...though, sometimes the techniques that work for other breeds don't work for bullies Nowadays, the "motivational" training is what's popular, so bullies are doing well with it. There are lots more bulldogs getting involved in performance thanks to rally--and you can look for several more bullies earning those advanced titles in the coming years, too!

Friday June 13th (friday the 13th) Judge Mr. Kent H. Delaney

Saturday June 14th Judge Mrs. Wanda V. Spediacci

Sunday June 15th Judge Mrs. Florence A. Males

Lets see if we can pull some majors for these shows..every year it is a good size entry but just a few dogs away from majors. Always a fun time..regardless of the heat. We show in the morning and it is not intolerable for the dogs..unless you take Breed that is..but hell Cooper took BIS show at this show. With the prices of gas and EVERYTHING to do with showing going up..now would be a good time to build majors closer to home instead of driving 5 to 7 hours to get them. Come on guys..with all the dogs out right now..I know it is totally possible!! Get your entries in..you only have a WEEK left! What if someone promised free ice cream?? lmao

Urgent: Action Needed Immediately in OHIO - Key Votes this week!

by

Urgent: Action Needed Now On
Ohio Dog And Kennel Legislation

Key Votes Expected This Week On Both Bills

by JOHN YATES

American Sporting Dog Alliance

http://www.americansportingdogalliance.org

COLUMBUS, OH – Proponents of two separate pieces of dog and kennel legislation are expected to try to ram them through the legislature this week. These bills will have a serious if not devastating impact on all kennel and dog owners if they are passed in their present form.

While some of our concerns have been addressed, this legislation continues to reflect a clear animal rights agenda that is attempting to discourage people from owning or breeding dogs.

It is more important now than ever to write to your state legislators and ask them to vote “no” on this legislation. Directions for contacting the legislators are provided below.

The House State Government and Elections Committee will hold a hearing this coming Thursday, May 22, on H.B. 223, at 9:30 a.m. in Room 122. A hearing on its Senate version, S.B. 173, was canceled last week due to reported opposition in that chamber. However, the sponsors of this draconian animal rights legislation have switched their plan to try to push it through the state House.

This legislation imposes heavy financial and legal liabilities on conscientious kennel owners, and would virtually eliminate hobby breeding of purebred dogs by imposing burdensome regulations, biased enforcement and frightening penalties.

The other legislation is H.B 446. A slightly improved version of this bill passed out of the House Local Municipal Government and Urban Revitalization Committee last week by a 10-4 vote. It now faces a vote of the full House, which is expected to happen on Tuesday.

H.B. 446 adversely affects all dog owners. The amendments reflect some of the concerns expressed by dog owners, but many more changes are needed to make the bill livable. Some of these changes have been promised verbally by the bill’s sponsor, but have not been presented in writing at this time.

It appears that an attempt is being made to ram these two bills through the House as quickly as possible. If they pass the House, they will go to the state Senate for consideration and hearings in committee.

These two bills take a giant step toward fulfilling the extreme animal rights agenda of the eventual elimination of the private ownership of animals. They would drastically reduce the number of puppies available in Ohio by sharply curtailing hobby breeding of purebred dogs.

Testimony on the bills has been mixed, with only a few people attending previous hearings. However, we are getting several reports that legislators have received many letters opposing the legislation.

The American Sporting Dog Alliance is supporting Ohio dog and kennel owners in an effort to defeat this legislation, and has offered strong testimony in opposition to the two bills. Ohio Valley Dog Owners President Norma Bennett Woolf has addressed the hearings on behalf of dog owners. Ms. Woolf has worked tirelessly to defeat this destructive legislation, and she is one of the true heroes of the movement to protect dog owners’ rights.

We strongly urge all Ohio dog and kennel owners to take an active role. Your participation and support are crucial. We cannot emphasize too strongly that this legislation stems from an extreme animal rights agenda that aims to greatly reduce the number of dogs as a giant step toward eliminating dog ownership altogether.

H.B. 223

This legislation (a companion to stalled S.B. 173) claims to target “puppy mills,” but would have a devastating impact on every kennel that has nine or more unsterilized adult dogs that could be construed as a “breeding dog.” Because of the definition and required burden of proof, almost all small hobby breeders will be affected.

A breeding dog is defined as any male or female dog that is intended for breeding or has produced one litter in a year, either as a stud dog or a mother. The law does not define standards for this definition or for the burden of proof, and the burden of proof rests with the kennel owner. We see this as a “Catch 22,” as there would be no way to conclusively prove the purpose for keeping any dog. It would a matter of convincing the dog warden to take the owner’s word.

This unvarnished animal rights legislation also grants dog wardens the power to confiscate any dog for which there is probable cause to call a breeding dog. The standards for probable cause are not defined, but could be construed as any dog that has the potential for being bred. We believe that the ambiguity is a deliberate attempt by the bill’s sponsor to use a “backdoor” approach to force people to spay or neuter their dogs, in order to avoid being classed as a breeder.

To obtain a breeding license, a kennel owner would have to pay an annual fee ranging from $150 to $750 (plus buy individual licenses for each dog), submit to inspections by state officials, provide proof of insurance, purchase a bond guaranteeing financial liability, submit to a personal background check by the police, be fingerprinted and obtain and use an approved vendor number to advertise or sell a dog or puppy.

Inspections would open any area that houses dogs to state officials without a warrant, including the owner’s home. Papers, documents and bank records also could be examined or subpoenaed.

Citations can be given and fines levied for violations or “threatened violations,” which are not defined. Any hearing, trial or appeal of an action must be done through only one Ohio court, in Franklin County.

The inspections would be based on providing a specified level of physical care in housing, sanitation, medical care and food and water.

They would require a kennel to be cleaned every 12 hours, mandate professional veterinary care for even minor conditions, injuries or ailments, require grooming and nail trimming, mandate vaccinations, deworming and heartworm prevention, and require available water at all times, even in freezing weather.

Here is a link to the actual text of this legislation: http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/bills.cfm?ID=127_HB_223.

We urge dog and kennel owners to submit written comments to each member of the House State Government and Elections Committee. Emails, letters and phone calls all are important. This is urgent!

This link will take you to a list of the committee members: http://www.house.state.oh.us/jsps/Committee.jsp?ID=24. A page will open up giving you a link to each senator’s email and mailing addresses. Committee Chairman Rep. David Daniels’ email is district86@ohr.state.oh.us. If you do nothing else, please a least write to your own legislator and Rep. Daniels to support dog owners. Your voice is very important now.

HB 446

Every dog owner will be affected by HB 446.

It says:

Puppies must be licensed for $10 apiece at three months of age, and also must wear a collar and license tag at that age. A puppy must be registered and licensed before it can be sold or transferred. Unlicensed puppies and dogs can be confiscated. The sponsor said he would amend the bill to allow the sale of an unlicensed puppy, and to permit puppies to be without collars inside the owner’s home (but not in the yard, and apparently not in a kennel outside of the home).

Individual dog license minimum costs would rise from $2 to $10 per year, and kennel license costs would rise from $10 to $50. Each dog in a kennel would have to be individually licensed. Many counties charge much more money than these minimum costs. The extra charge for licensing for a dog that is not spayed or neutered will be imposed on dogs at six months of age, instead of the current nine months. However, dogs that reside in kennels still would have to be individually licensed.

Kennel licenses would be required for anyone who raises a single litter of hunting dogs. The bill says: “A kennel owner is a person, partnership, firm, company, or corporation professionally engaged in the business of breeding dogs for hunting or for sale.”

A particularly onerous part of the legislation gives county auditors the unrestricted power to revoke kennel licenses (this includes anyone who raises a single litter of hunting dogs) for unproven allegations of animal cruelty. County auditors do not have the qualifications to make judgments about animal cruelty, and the guilt or innocence of a dog owner facing such accusations should be determined only in a court of law. This power is given to auditors “if the auditor determines” that a violation of animal cruelty statutes has occurred. No limits are placed on this power, and the legislation does not define any criteria for an auditor to use. In fact, the law gives an auditor the power to revoke a license if he/she simply feels that a kennel owner may have violated cruelty statutes, or even extra-legal personal opinions about what constitutes cruelty.

Good Samaritans who find a stray dog must notify authorities within two days and would have to license the dog in their name within two weeks, under a new amendment. The original bill required people who find a lost do to turn it over to the animal control agency within 10 days. This would have exposed the dog to a high probability of euthanasia. The amendments still do not give people the option of turning over the dog to a no-kill shelter or rescue group, or to find someone to take the dog if its owner cannot be found. In addition, this amendment would make it easier for animal rights extremists to steal hunting dogs, as they have done in many places, as there is no requirement for seeking a dog’s potential owner or scanning for a microchip. Animal rights extremists also sometimes steal hunting dogs, remove their collars, and turn them loose far away from their homes, so that they will be taken to an animal control facility and killed.

People no longer will be allowed to give their dogs rabies vaccinations, but will have to have the vaccinations done by a veterinarian at a much higher cost and the loss of personal time. There is no reason for this, as the U.S. Center For Disease Prevention and Control reported last year that canine rabies has been eradicated in America. Not one case has been reported in more than10 years.

The bill allows state inspectors to go into people’s homes and onto their property to enforce the law. It does not specify what officials can do inspections, and it would appear to include both local dog wardens and Humane Society animal cruelty police officers. Many animal cruelty police officers have ties to radical animal rights groups, and this legislation would permit non-local officers to come to your county to enforce the law.

Other provisions regulate dogs that are declared dangerous, cats, ferrets and other animals.

The purpose of greatly increased fees is to make law-abiding dog owners pay for the cost of animal control in Ohio. The unfairness and irrationality of this approach is that responsible dog owners and breeders, who are perhaps the least likely cause of the problem, are the people who are being forced to pay for it.

Breeders and owners of purebred dogs rarely burden animal control agencies and animal shelters. Moreover, purebred puppies almost never are found in municipal animal shelters. This legislation makes responsible dog owners and breeders the “cash cow” that will be milked to pay for animal control efforts directed at irresponsible people who ignore the law. ASDA regards this as the unethical exploitation of law-abiding citizens.

People who actually violate the law should pay for the cost of enforcing it, through fines and other penalties. This cost should not be borne by law-abiding dog owners. We should not be held responsible for the actions of others, over which we have no control.

We urge dog and kennel owners to submit a letter of opposition to your own representative, and also to as many other legislators as you can.

Chicago City Officials fed Lies About MSN by Animal Rights Activists

by

Animal Rights Groups Lie To Chicago Aldermen

‘Cook’ Statistics To Push For Spay And Neuter Mandate

by JOHN YATES

American Sporting Dog Alliance

http://www.americansportingdogalliance.org

CHICAGO, IL – Animal rights activists have hand-fed Chicago aldermen a variety of disinformation, distortions and outright lies in order to justify an ordinance mandating the sterilization of dogs and cats. The ordinance was introduced this week.

Ordinance sponsors, Aldermen Ginger Rugai (19th) and Edward M. Burke (14th), say that their goal is to prevent attacks by roving packs of dogs, and to reduce what they term an overpopulation of pets that jam the city’s shelter system.

We don’t doubt the sincerity of Rugai and Burke. They simply are echoing what they have been told by animal rights activists closely tied to the radical Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). HSUS is not an organization to help animals. It is a powerful national political action group to advance the animal rights agenda. Their ultimate goal is the elimination of animal ownership in America.

The ordinance would require all dogs and cats to be spayed or neutered at the age of six months. Fines for violations start at $100, and go up to $500 if an animal is not sterilized within 60 days of the initial citation.

There are some possible exemptions from this requirement, providing a dog’s owner is willing to pay a $330 annual license fee, have her or his home classified as a licensed “animal care facility,” and be subject to inspections and criminal background checks for him/herself and every member of the dog owner’s family. Even business associates would be subject to these requirements if they have contact with the dogs.

Possible exemptions to mandatory sterilization are granted, at the discretion of the city, for holders of breeding permits, registered purebreds that are actively being shown or entered in competition, dogs that are currently being trained for competition, service dogs, dogs owned by an agency that provides guard dogs, police dogs, military dogs or dogs that have certified medical reasons that would preclude sterilization.

The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates that 37-percent of American households own dogs, with an average of 1.7 dogs per household. For Chicago’s population of 1.1 million households, that would translate into 392,913 households that own 667,952 dogs.

Nationwide, about 60-percent of the dogs already are spayed and neutered. Based on that figure, Chicago’s enforcement problem would require regulating about 267,000 unsterilized dogs – a daunting task for a city that is perpetually strapped for money.

Rugai has attempted to introduce pet sterilization legislation before, but the proposed ordinances have died in committee. Thus time, however, she is joined by Burke, who as chairman of the Finance Committee is one of the most powerful members of Council.

The next Council meeting will be Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

Dangerous Dog Attacks

The major reason for the ordinance, as stated by Aldermen Rugai and Burke, is the danger of people being attacked by roving packs of dogs. They cite a frightening April 10 incident when Southwest Side resident Gabriela Munoz Lopez was attacked by five “pit bulls.” She sustained severe bites before being rescued by a passer-by, who pulled her into his van.

The aldermen said the ordinance is justified, because intact dogs are 2.6 times more likely to bite than sterilized dogs. They allege that the city is full of roving packs of dangerous dogs, although actual statistics contradict these assertions.

In 1978, Chicago reported 11,932 cases of dog bites. By 2007, according to Chicago Animal Care & Control, the number of reported dog bites had fallen to 2,149. That is an 82-percent decline.

While 2,149 dog bite cases is a significant number, further analysis of the data shows that there are far fewer severe bites.

In 1979, 199 children were treated for dog bites at Chicago’s former Wyler Children's Hospital, and 11 were admitted. In 2007, 17 children were treated at Chicago’s Comer Children's Hospital (the former Wyler facility), of which two were admitted. That is a 91-percent decline in treatment, and an 88-percent decline in hospitalization.

These statistics reflect dog bites of any kind, and do not indicate that people were bitten by roaming packs of dogs, as the aldermen and their HSUS sources claim.

A local organization called Pets Are Worth Saving (PAWS) has been pushing the issue of dog attacks on its website and in news releases. PAWS founder and Chairperson Paula Fasseas has very close ties to the radical Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), and has acted as a spokesperson for the aldermen in newspaper reports of this issue. In fact, Fasseas has judged awards given to animal rights activists by HSUS.

The PAWS material is virtually a carbon copy of HSUS position papers and jargon, and the two aldermen echo the same words and ideas in the preamble to the ordinance.

“Pit bulls,” a generic term for several breeds of dogs and their crosses, repeatedly crop up in the discussion. The aldermen link them to street crime, the drug culture and gangs, and animal rights groups tie them to dog attacks and dog fighting.

However, the “pit bull” breeds and crosses represent only six-percent of the dogs in America, studies have shown. This means that an effort by City Council to stop the breeding of “pit bulls” will harm the 94-percent of Chicagoans who do not own those breeds of dogs.

Good laws go after the bad guys. Bad laws go after everyone, in the hope of catching some bad guys.

An AKC ranking of the most popular breeds of dogs puts mastiffs in 36th place, bullmastiffs in 46th place, bull terriers in 53rd place, American Staffordshire terriers in 70th place, and Staffordshire bull terriers in 79th place. These are the breeds commonly called “pit bulls.”

In the past, Fasseas and Rugai have ignored the position of the Chicago Veterinary Medicine Association (CVMA), with more than1,000 member veterinarians, by their advocacy of breed-specific legislation, which would outlaw “pit bull” breeds and crosses.

A 2005 letter by former CVMA President Dr. Joanne Carlson DVM strongly opposed a ban on “pit bulls.” types: “Forcing responsible pet owners to surrender well-behaved dogs is both unfair and unnecessary. The CVMA strongly supports enforcing leash laws, vaccination requirements and the implementation of programs to teach responsible dog ownership. In addition, we advocate setting clear guidelines to manage dangerous dogs on an individual basis.”

‘Pet Overpopulation’ Myth

Aldermen Rugai and Burke also said the ordinance was based on high admission and euthanasia rates at the city shelter, and a high population of unwanted surplus pets. The aldermen and PAWS point out that 22,833 dogs and cats were euthanized at the shelter in 2006 (the latest available data).

According to Burke, Rugai and PAWS, a mandatory spay and neuter ordinance will solve this problem.

The facts say otherwise.

Official reports from the shelter show that the number of pets euthanized at the shelter has fallen dramatically, from 42,561 in 1996 to 19,701 in 2006. That is a 54-percent decline over 10 years.

The decline continues at a rapid pace. In 2006, the Chicago Animal Shelter Alliance reported a 12-percent drop in euthanasia and an 11-percent drop in shelter admissions between 2003 and 2005. Moreover, the Alliance reported, euthanasia rates per thousand residents placed Chicago second only to Denver for the lowest kill numbers between the two coasts.

But that is not even half the story.

An analysis of the shelter data for 2006 shows that only 736 healthy dogs were euthanized, and this figure includes dogs that were brought to the shelters by their owners specifically to be euthanized.

The vast majority of the dogs euthanized were categorized as unhealthy and untreatable; 7,220 killed dogs fit this category, and 1,195 of that total were brought by their owners to be euthanized.

A breakdown of the 736 healthy dogs that were killed is not available, but many other shelters report that these dogs tend to have temperament problems, or be among the “pit bull” breeds and crosses. Many shelters automatically put “pit bulls” on death row.

Those figures also tell only part of the story. The other major factor is a breakdown of admissions and discharges (where the dogs come from and where they go).

Of the 19,544 dogs entering the shelter, 16,668 came from “the public,” which combines voluntary relinquishments and dogs picked up by animal control officers.

The total includes 1,012 dogs brought to the city shelter from rescue groups and private shelters belonging to the Community Coalition, 649 dogs brought by rescue groups and private shelters not belonging to the Coalition, and 1,195 untreatable and ill dogs brought by their owners to be euthanized.

Of those admissions, 1,118 dogs were returned to their owners, 5,088 dogs were adopted from the city shelter, 1,126 dogs were transferred to private shelters and rescue groups that belong to the Coalition, and 1,762 dogs were transferred to private shelters and rescue groups that do not belong to the Coalition.

The pattern is clear. Private shelters and rescue groups that tout their no-kill status take their elderly, sick, injured and undesirable dogs to the city shelter to be put to death. They return to their private groups with 2,888 dogs that are easily adopted. These dogs tend to include popular breeds, small dogs, and “cute, cuddly” dogs.

The city shelter does the dirty work and deals with the cast-offs. The independent groups take the cream and are able to claim no-kill status for public relations purposes.

Now, some of those same organizations cynically want private dog owners to pay the price for their statistical manipulations, through a burdensome, unfair and draconian spay and neuter mandate.

In truth, the statistics show clearly and conclusively, there were only 736 healthy dogs euthanized at the city shelter in 2006, and most of those probably were elderly, of unpopular or “undesirable” breeds, or fitting the description of the hardest dogs to place: “big, black dogs.”

The myth of pet “overpopulation” in Chicago is further exploded by the fact that thousands of adoptable dogs are imported into the city every year by private shelters and rescue groups to meet the insatiable demand for adoptable pets in the metropolitan area. These dogs are trucked in from other states by the dozens, and many are flown in from foreign countries such as Mexico, Korea, Taiwan and Puerto Rico. That assertion is clearly documented by reviewing the websites of “humane relocation” groups and their extensive transport network.

The PAWS shelter, whose director says there is an overpopulation of dogs in Chicago, also brings in many dogs from the southern states to be adopted. A year after Hurricane Katrina, PAWS reported bringing in dozens of dogs (three vans with 40 dogs on just one trip) to its state-of-the-art $9 million new shelter that houses only 70 dogs and 80 cats. Pretty fancy digs! Complete with crystal chandeliers!

PAWS projected adopting 1,700 rescued dogs in 2007, but expected that this number would increase to 4,000 in 2008. “Rescuing” in America has become a big business.

Inherently Divisive

Mandatory spay and neuter ordinances are inherently divisive. They pit law abiding and conscientious dog owners against elected officials in heated emotional battles. They divide people who love and own dogs from people who work in the rescue movement from the best of motives. They cultivate mistrust of animal control officials. They spark allegations of racism and racial profiling when “pit bulls” are singled out.

Moreover, these kinds of ordinances have been proven to backfire in communities that have tried them. They result in more abandoned dogs, higher shelter admissions, higher euthanasia rates, lower compliance with licensing and rabies vaccination laws, and radically increased municipal costs for animal control.

These kinds of ordinances and laws have failed in everywhere they have been tried. People are afraid to get dog licenses, as proof of sterilization is required. People are afraid to go to a veterinarian for rabies shots or medical care, because veterinarians are required to turn them in. Many dogs suffer as a result. People abandon their pets because they fear the fines and penalties. Children lose beloved companions because their parents won’t abide by the law.

And what does it accomplish? Nothing. Nada. Zilch. That has been the experience of every community that has tried it. It set San Mateo County, CA, back 10 years, and the county still hasn’t reached statewide averages.

Another lie fed to the aldermen was about a “comprehensive program” to spay and neuter pets in New Hampshire, which saved $3.2 million in sheltering costs.

That’s true. The lie is that the New Hampshire program is voluntary – not mandatory, such as is being proposed in Chicago. Voluntary spaying and neutering works, and cities that have taken this seriously – such as San Francisco and Berkley, CA – have achieved 100-perecent no-kill status at municipal shelters in only a year.

If San Francisco can do it right, why does Chicago want to do it wrong?

The reason why is simple: animal rights philosophy. The animal rights groups want to see people abandon their pets. They want to see high shelter admissions, and high euthanasia rates. They want to see dog owners hassled and harassed, and living in fear, so that they will give up their pets.

They want this because they believe all private ownership of animals is exploitation and slavery. One of the most radical groups, People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals, kills more than 94-percent of the dogs at its own shelter in Virginia every year. Some years, it’s 97-percent.

As HSUS President Wayne Pacelle said: “One generation and out.” Spay them, neuter them, and they’re gone in one generation.

That’s the plan that the animal rights groups are hiding from the aldermen.

Fasseas of PAWS added much fuel to the fire of divisiveness with her recently published comment about the ordinance: “This legislation will ensure that pet guardians bear the responsibility for adequately caring for their pets.”

People who own dogs are not their guardians. They are their owners. The term “guardian” makes all animals wards of the state. They are not. Animals are private property, and we hope City Council has the courage to reaffirm this basic American right of property ownership.

Mandatory spay and neuter ordinances make dogs into de facto wards of the state. That is their logic or, much more accurately, their illogic. These ordinances take away dog owners’ control of their property, arbitrarily take away their right to possess their property, and arbitrarily take away the value of their property.

The City of Chicago does not own my dogs. I do.

Divisiveness truly is inherent in these kinds of ordinances. While dogs may be legally private property, the fact is that most dog owners see them as family. They feel invaded and raped by these kinds of laws. It is wrong for government to make decent, law-abiding people feel this way.

Many Black people also see the focus on “pit bulls” as inherently racist. “Pit bulls” are popular in many inner city areas for several reasons. They are fashionable. They are seen as guard dogs in high crime districts. They are sometimes a statement of a lack of faith in the police and justice system to protect people from criminals. Many of these breeds also are noted for being exceptionally loyal and devoted to their families.

Yet, Aldermen Rugai and Burke see “pit bull” ownership as an indication of criminal activity: Dog fighting, drugs or gangs.

Websites and blogs already are calling this Chicago ordinance a form of racial profiling and even overt racism, since the aldermen are really talking about Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. They are saying that the mere possession of a “pit bull” is a probable indicator of criminal behavior.

Burke was quoted in the Chicago Sun-Times. “When you drive down the street and see a gang banger with all kinds of gang regalia walking along with two or three pit bulls, it’s pretty simple for the policeman to raise the dog’s tail and see whether or not it’s spayed or neutered. If it’s not, the gang member is in violation,” Burke said, noting that street gangs operate dog-fighting rings. “…I don’t know of too many gang members [who] would be willing to subject themselves to this type of scrutiny (of background checks for unsterilized dogs).”

It is hard for some Black people not to see those kinds of comments as a subtle form of racism.

Divisiveness also will rear its head in the courts, through prosecution of law-abiding good citizens from every neighborhood of the city, and from expensive lawsuits against the city that are virtually guaranteed, if this ordinance is passed. Los Angeles is in the midst of this kind of lawsuit right now.

Another kind of divisiveness will chase away many of the loyal and dedicated volunteers who work with the city shelter and private rescue groups. When they see the increase in abandoned pets and euthanasia rates, they will know that all of their hard work and personal sacrifices have been for naught.

The grim black irony of this is that Chicago already has one of the very finest shelter programs and rescue networks in America. They have worked miracles, and this is not an exaggeration. Through their work, euthanasia and shelter admission rates have plummeted, and thousands of animals have found good and loving homes.

Their work will be destroyed by this ordinance.

The answer is not to divide people. It is to enforce existing laws. The dangerous situations, such as the recent dog attack, could be prevented simply by aggressive enforcement of existing leash laws and licensing requirements. The issue is not that these dogs may have puppies. The issue is that they are being allowed to roam in violation of existing laws.

Medical Risks May Be Significant
The American Veterinary Medical Association has long advocated spaying and neutering of dogs and continues to do so, under the belief that the benefits outweigh the risks. However, recent research has led many individual veterinarians to seriously question this premise. The most recent research is pointing out many possible serious problems.

A 2007 analysis of the research by Dr. Larry Katz of Rutgers University concluded:

“Tradition holds that the benefits of (sterilization) at an early age outweigh the risks. Often, tradition holds sway in the decision-making process even after countervailing evidence has accumulated. Ms (Laura) Sanborn has reviewed the veterinary medical literature in an exhaustive and scholarly treatise, attempting to unravel the complexities of the subject. More than 50 peer-reviewed papers were examined to assess the health impacts of spay / neuter in female and male dogs, respectively. One cannot ignore the findings of increased risk from osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, hypothyroidism, and other less frequently occurring diseases associated with neutering male dogs. It would be irresponsible of the veterinary profession and the pet owning community to fail to weigh the relative costs and benefits of neutering on the animal’s health and well-being. The decision for females may be more complex, further emphasizing the need for individualized veterinary medical decisions, not standard operating procedures for all patients.”

Sanborn’s review of the research concluded:

The number of health problems associated with neutering may exceed the associated health benefits in most cases.

On the positive side, neutering male dogs

· eliminates the small risk (probably <1%) of dying from testicular cancer

· reduces the risk of non-cancerous prostate disorders

· reduces the risk of perianal fistulas

· may possibly reduce the risk of diabetes (data inconclusive).

On the negative side, neutering male dogs

if done before 1 year of age, significantly increases the risk of osteosarcoma (bone cancer); this is a common cancer in medium/large and larger breeds with a poor prognosis.
increases the risk of cardiac hemangiosarcoma by a factor of 1.6
triples the risk of hypothyroidism
increases the risk of progressive geriatric cognitive impairment
triples the risk of obesity, a common health problem in dogs with many associated health problems
quadruples the small risk (<0.6%) of prostate cancer
doubles the small risk (<1%) of urinary tract cancers
increases the risk of orthopedic disorders
increases the risk of adverse reactions to vaccinations.

For female dogs, the situation is more complex. The number of health benefits associated with spaying may exceed the associated health problems in some (not all) cases. On balance, whether spaying improves the odds of overall good health or degrades them probably depends on the age of the female dog and the relative risk of various diseases in the different breeds.

On the positive side, spaying female dogs

if done before 2.5 years of age, greatly reduces the risk of mammary tumors, the most common malignant tumors in female dogs
nearly eliminates the risk of pyometra, which otherwise would affect about 23% of intact female dogs; pyometra kills about 1% of intact female dogs
reduces the risk of perianal fistulas
removes the very small risk (_0.5%) from uterine, cervical, and ovarian tumors

On the negative side, spaying female dogs

if done before 1 year of age, significantly increases the risk of osteosarcoma (bone cancer); this is a common cancer in larger breeds with a poor prognosis
increases the risk of splenic hemangiosarcoma by a factor of 2.2 and cardiac hemangiosarcoma by a factor of >5; this is a common cancer and major cause of death in some breeds
triples the risk of hypothyroidism
increases the risk of obesity by a factor of 1.6-2, a common health problem in dogs with many associated health problems
causes urinary “spay incontinence” in 4-20% of female dogs
increases the risk of persistent or recurring urinary tract infections by a factor of 3-4
increases the risk of recessed vulva, vaginal dermatitis, and vaginitis, especially for female dogs spayed before puberty
doubles the small risk (<1%) of urinary tract tumors
increases the risk of orthopedic disorders
increases the risk of adverse reactions to vaccinations

Sanborn concluded: “One thing is clear – much of the spay/neuter information that is available to the public is unbalanced and contains claims that are exaggerated or unsupported by evidence. Rather than helping to educate pet owners, much of it has contributed to common misunderstandings about the health risks and benefits.”

It is ASDA’s opinion that these research findings cast enough doubt on the practice of universal sterilization to make it inadvisable if not reckless for any level of government to mandate spaying or neutering at this point in time.

Moreover, such a mandate would expose any governing body to substantial legal and financial liability if individual pet owners successfully claim damages based on current or future research.

Please Help Chicago Dog Owners
It is urgent for all dog owners to come to the assistance of Chicago people now. Please get involved by offering support, writing to the aldermen and Mayor Richard M. we have 2 who dont like eachother. So 3 will roam free and one of the 2 are crated when we are not home. If we are home, they are seperated with a baby gate or fence.

Funny they LOVE to play together with a fence between them, but w/o they fight.

NO kennel, 1 crate in the house. The Chi eats in the crate and we put one of the girls in it when needed.

OUr crate is our furnature too.

1 female is kept in her own huge kennel cause she will fight with anyone. The rest are out together unless someone is in heat, then the one in heat is put on the side yard. If it is really hot the Bulldogs go in the kennel (indoor/outdoor runs with ac). We have too many kids to keep the dogs indoors right now, plus Brennen is mobile so he is fascinated with all their stuff and loves to play with food and water bowls. If it is a show weekend then whomever is entered is kept crated inside so we don't have to keep doing a full grooming daily. Otherwise it's in the backyard to play and cause havoc...that includes Ms Holly when she is here Jaime over the objections of her handler of course!! lol

There is an 8 x 10 outside run that

by

can only be accessed by one of the indoor runs. It all started right there..LOL.. Angus is the only dog that gets to go outside during the day.
The outdoor area is covered and has a cement floor.
We started with the one run inside the garage, the doggie door and the outdoor run for the one dog.
As our family grew we added more runs in the garage that attached to that first original run.

MacKenzie and Cleo roam the house during the day and Ester is crated. They are all loose when we are home, unless the occasional agrument time out. The girls don't always see eye-to eye and Kenz is an angel. I had 2 crates in the house.

No kennels and I don't ever see the need for a kennel for me. Being raised with lots of dogs and kennels (my parents had 2 kennels, boarding and show dog kennel) I don't really like a dog not being in the house with me. I feel sorry for kennel dogs.

I've seen Brian and Beth's setup and it is lovely and a very nice best case scenario for several dogs in a household.

2 male (1 intact)and 2 female(1 intact). Out all the time. THere is a doggie door available for them to potty. It goes out to a covered outdoor cement run.
The only dog I crate is Maybull (just turned a year). She tends to be a bit of a chewer if left for a long period of time.
When Maybull was in heat I jockeyed her and Diesel back and forth with crate time. Thank goodness both dogs are laid back. They didn't seem to mind their crate time at all. Gave them lots of toys and stuff to do in the crate and out. Lots of exercise.

All in a day's work! Multiple Brags!

by

Whew! Another whirlwind day of showing for The SittingBullies Gang...but
a VERY fruitful one! Our biggest news is that Chubbs earned her first
Utility leg today and a first place (the only dog to qualify in this
very difficult class today!).

Gabe was kept real busy with THREE different classes (and I wasn't being
a "slacker" either! ) Gabe earned a Rally Advanced leg with a nice
score of 98 as well as 3rd place...then made his debut in the breed ring
coming away with RWD from the BBE class...and went on to place 3rd in
his Novice B OB class with a very nice score of 190.5 (and all this in
the extreme heatwave today!...many dogs didn't qualify because it was so
hot and they pooped out). Gabe also passed his CERF eye exam

We are "dog tired" and heading to bed now so we're ready for another round tomorrow!

Congratulations. It sounds like you guys were busy but happy . Man, I wish I could watch Chubbs in action in the utility ring. I have never seen a Bulldog do it, and while neat, watching a Lab do it just isn't the same.

I'll have to have my boys get my video of Gracie...

by

at the 2000 nationals in Portland--she earned her 4th UDX leg there (I believe) as well as HIT AND High Combined (...don't know if she's the only bulldog to ever earn a HC at nationals, but I don't think it's happened very many times!) Anyway, that's on the agenda for transferring to digital and getting online--and people can see some advanced OB routines done well by a bulldog (she had scores in the 190s in both classes)

Easter Egg Hunting....

by Jaime Gerdes

This evening we went out for a bit. When we got home my husband asked if I wanted to go Easter Egg hunting. I got a little worried thinking of the smell if there was a lost egg in our house. Then he told me the puppies were out (because I didn't latch the door, and their mother opened it for them). All four of the little chubbs were roaming around our family room. For being barely four weeks old, they certainly are a naughty bunch... I always say, smart kids and dogs are naughty if they're not guided in the right direction! Naturally, the smallest one is the ring leader. The biggest one, the boy, was laying in the middle of the floor crying for help.

HSUS Dupes Donors into Believing It Takes Care of Animals

by

May 15, 2008
HSUS is alive and well in Texas with the HSUS Southwest Regional Office in
Ft. Worth and the HSUS Spay/Neuter Clinic & Animal Wellness Center in
Dallas. HSUS has NO affiliation with the federal government nor with local
humane societies. Donate to your local animal shelters, not HSUS!

Animal Rights Group Dupes Donors Into Believing It Takes Care of Animals

(Columbus) - When regional retailer, Meijer, received pressure from
sportsmen to sever ties with the animal rights extremists in the Humane
Society of the Unites States (HSUS), some questioned why the U.S.
Sportsmen's Alliance (USSA) acted to oppose the partnership.

"Most people simply don't know that the HSUS is actually an animal rights
organization that is opposed to any use of animals for the benefit of
humans," said USSA president and CEO Bud Pidgeon. "The public deserves to
know the hidden agenda behind this is to deceive them."

On April 24, 2008, HSUS, the world's largest animal rights organization,
announced a partnership with Meijer, a regional discount retail chain to
raise $5,000 for the organization's fund to address the purported problem of
abandoned pets as a result of the national home foreclosure crisis.

The USSA, a national organization founded to protect the rights of
sportsmen, responded with an alert asking hunters to contact the retailer to
protest the partnership. Meijer quickly responded by canceling the
arrangement. Since that time, some animal welfare activists have questioned
why USSA would oppose a partnership alleged to benefit pets.

The Washington DC-based HSUS, raised $100 million dollars according to its
2006 IRS filing. Despite a name that seems tailor made to animal shelters,
HSUS is in fact an animal rights organization. Its main function is to
change laws that permit Americans to gain any benefit from animals. It
advocates for restrictions on livestock farmers, bans on life-saving medical
research performed on animals and opposes zoos, circuses and rodeos. Of
course HSUS also opposes hunting. The HSUS does not operate or represent the
local dog and cat shelters that exist across the United States.

"With a name like the Humane Society of the United States, it's easy to see
why some people believe that there is a connection between it and local
animal shelters, which struggle every year to make ends meet," explained
Pidgeon. "HSUS spends the bulk of its money on making contributions to
politicians, lobbying, lawyers and expensive 30-second advertisements to
promote voter issues aimed at banning various uses of animals."

The Humane Society uses campaigns, such as the Meijer campaign, as a public
relations tool to help it raise its $100 million dollar war chest for its
animal rights crusade. Evidence of this is contained within its leadership.
Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the organization, is the former executive director of
the Fund for Animals, which was the nation's leading anti-hunting group.
Upon accepting the executive job at HSUS, Pacelle announced a merger with
the Fund for Animals and quickly hired its most ardent hunting opponents as
his top management staff.

The HSUS then swallowed several anti-livestock organizations, hiring their
leadership as well. Its takeover of the Doris Day Animal League has given it
access to Hollywood dollars, previously the home turf of the radical People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Unlike PETA, however, Pacelle and HSUS are not interested in making a large
public relations spectacle using naked models or making outrageous
statements comparing the Holocaust to the slaughter of chickens. Instead,
HSUS has launched a series of campaigns that put it in a positive light with
animal lovers in general.

Such was the case in 2005, when HSUS created a fund to aid animals stranded
as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Later, the Louisiana Attorney General's
office launched an investigation of HSUS when allegations surfaced that the
money never made it to the pets in need.

In 2007 it launched a campaign to address the issue of so-called "puppy
mills," abusive large-scale commercial dog breeding operations. Using
sentimental images of suffering puppies, the organization is backing
legislation in Pennsylvania that would devastate small hobby breeders, dog
show kennels and sporting dog enthusiasts. The legislation is so radical
that it has been opposed by the American Kennel Club, United Kennel Club and
even dog rescue shelters in the state.

"Taking advantage of the American people's love for their pets, HSUS is able
to deceive donors and the public into believing that the organization is in
the mainstream of American values," said Pidgeon. "It is this mainstream
image that allows HSUS to raise its 100 million dollar budget to take our
hunting and fishing rights away. At the same time, by deceiving animal
lovers, HSUS robs financially strapped dog and cat shelters of critical
funds needed to actually look after abandoned and abused pets."

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance recommends that people who want to help real
animal shelters give to their local shelter organizations.

"Some animal rights groups masquerade as pet shelters, so donating to a
local organization gives the contributor the opportunity to determine how
their funds will actually be spent," said Pidgeon.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance is a national association of sportsmen and
sportsmen's organizations that protects the rights of hunters, anglers and
trappers in the courts, legislatures, at the ballot, in Congress and through
public education programs. For more information about the U.S. Sportsmen's

Arizona MSN HB 2516 - Any word on this?

by

Arizona: Mandatory Spay or Neuter Measure Awaits House Committee!

Friday, February 29, 2008

House Bill 2516, sponsored by State Representative Ed Ableser (D-17), would prohibit persons from owning or keeping a dog or cat that is more than six months old if the animal has not been spayed or neutered. A person would have to obtain an intact permit to own an animal that does not fit the criteria, which places an unfair burden on Arizona sportsmen who may own/breed dogs for hunting purposes.

This legislation threatens to keep hunters and other dog owners from making decisions based upon their own personal circumstances. It would prevent hunters from continuing the tradition of occasionally breeding their favorite dog in order to provide other hunters with good dogs and defray some of the costs associated with caring for their animals. From a financial perspective, the bill discriminates against hunters with limited budgets.

HB2516 is currently in the House waiting to be assigned to a committee. It is important that NRA members continue to monitor this bill that would severely impact sportsmen if it were to become law. Please contact your State Representative and urge him or her to oppose HB2516
