I feel so silly for asking, but I have never attended Nationals before and am trying to make heads or tails out of the schedule. I am not really sure what or how many categories I can enter.
I have a 9-12 month bitch, that was bred/owned/handled by myself, she is pointed but doesn't have any majors.
I am assuming that the BCA sweepstakes (on Monday), BBC (on Thursday) and the BCA Div II (on Saturday)are just like regular shows where I might either enter her in her age class or in BBE?
I am very unsure as to what the shows on Tues, Wed and Fri. are about? Will dogs and bitches be judged together, are they divided into age class or BBE? Is there a limit as to how many shows she can be entered into?
Oh, and one more question, where do I find the entry fees?
Thanks,
Heather M

Your bitch can be entered in sweeps and a regular class. (Either puppy classes or BBE). I don't have the schedule in front of me, but the shows are usually divided. Meaning, dogs/bitches will be shown one day, then Inter-sex (Specials) are shown the following day. The shows progress as any other show during classes (puppies, BBE, Open)..dogs compete against dogs, bitches against bitches..until BW in the Intersex ring. You can enter all 3 shows and each sweeps. The entry fees will be on the premium list, or find the show superintendent's website. I would do this for you, but I'm in a rush this am.

There are three shows. The Bulldog Club of America (which includes Sweepstakes, Obedience, Jr Handling) usually takes up the first 3 days.
A local club will host one specialty and so will the host Division.
The host show and the division show during National week do not offer sweeps, juniors or obedience.
Often, depending on the size of the show and the Division it is held, the two "back-up' specialties will last more than one day with classes one day and intersex (which includes Best Puppy, stud dog and brood bitch competition) the next day.
Be prepared to be exhausted.

on Monday there will be a specialty show hosted by the BCA, which will also include the sweeps? (therefore, I should pay 2 entries)
And then the BCA Division II show will be held on Sunday? The BCA and the BCA Division II are TWO separate hosts?
If I want to exhibit in all 3 shows, including the local club hosting and also show in the sweeps, then I have 4 entries? See, I thought from the premium list that the BCA was only hosting sweeps, rally and obedience.
Sorry for being so dull.

Don't worry. You were just never taught how the clubs work.
The Bulldog Club of America is its own club and it has 1 show per year. This is what we call National. BCA is divided into divisions (1-8 depending on region of the country). Divisions can hold one or two specialties a year, depending on the inclination of the membership.
Each Division has several local clubs.
This year, the BCA show takes up 3 days. Monday is Sweepstakes, Obedience and rally.
Tuesday is regular classes and jr showmanship.
Wednesday is intersex.
After all the classes are judged on Wednesday, the BCA National show is over.
The Buckeye show is the local host club.
Thursday is the classes for Buckeye
Friday is the intersex for Buckeye.
Division 2 will just take one day and that is Saturday.
i assume you have a class bitch young enough for sweepstakes and you will not be showing her in jr handling or obedience?
You will enter her in BCA sweeps and regular classes.
You will enter her in Buckeye (no sweeps)
You will enter her in Division 2 (no sweeps)
Hope this helps

I appreciate you breaking it down. I guess the part the confused me was the different "classes" being on different days for basically the same show. But, I guess, with this being Nationals, there will be more bulldogs there then I have ever seen in one place!
This is all very exciting, I have been to specialties but I can't wait for this! Plus it is very close to home for me.
Thanks again for taking time to break it all down!

Your question if funny to me, because I had all the same questions that you did when I first started showing. What does that mean? Who? What? And then what?
I too would listen to everyone's explanation of how dog shows worked - and none of the terms or descriptions made sense to me either. I still have no idea why they call it a "Premium" list - I just know that it's something that's published that you should probably read if you want to enter the show. I also know that none of them make sense (except for the Colorado show!) and they are all confusing. I guess at some point there was a "Mediocre" list, but that was bred out of the showing world, because it probably made too much sense.
Your question is also sad to me, because I feel that alot of people get turned away when they try to get show information. It's limited and disjointed at best.
Glad that came to the right place to get help, and it's nice to see that people on this board took the time to make sure you understand what is second nature to them.
You will have an amazing time, and everything will click once you go to Nationals.
Thanks to Sandra for posting the Premium list. I have been looking for that myself.

Figure 1: shows the line of the shallow chest and brisket and the flabby, pendulous belly.
Figure 2: shows the line of the deep brisket well "tucked up" at loin.
Figure 3: front view of the ribs in flat-sided, badly developed specimen.
Figure 4: Another front view of the ribs, in a well-developed specimen. The ribs are well rounded or "sprung" at the fullest behind the shoulders, giving ample capacity for the full development of the organs of the chest.

I have heard several people say that in order for them to keep a puppy dog (out of a litter), he has to be really nice and that you can be more forgiving of a puppy bitch because you can breed her to a better stud dog in order to better her pups.
I have not heard anyone state the converse, that is, breeding one's dog to a superior bitch.
Do you find that you are more selective when deciding to keep a puppy dog? And if so, what are your reasons?
Thanks,
Heather M
disclaimer: The above does not reflect my view on choosing a mating pair, that is, inferior x superior set.

This could be a long explanation. Maybe someone with more time will elaborate. Simply put, it is common sense behind the statement "I have heard several people say that in order for them to keep a puppy dog (out of a litter), he has to be really nice and that you can be more forgiving of a puppy bitch because you can breed her to a better stud dog in order to better her pups. "
Vast arrays of males, of all qualities, are available at any given time to improve the bitch you have available. The converse statement is usually not true. You cannot just "go shopping" for the bitch that would best compliment the mediocre male you have chosen to keep.
Using that logic, a male without any virtue is really of no use in a breeding program. That is not to say that a dog with great virtue in one area but lacking in others is of no value to a breeder. Many breeders keep a dog that has something they need in their lines though that dog may never earn a title.

Look in the Bulldogger..it would seem that most bitches ARE superior to many males in the pages IMO. Not saying there aren't good dogs in there..but the question that everyone I know keeps asking is.."Who do I breed my bitch to" because many dogs are just that mediocre.
Posted on Sep 1, 2010, 9:02 AM from IP address 99.57.28.68
I think it depends on where you are in your breeding program. If you are still building, it really makes no sense to keep a dog that is not going to turn out.
I have kept some so-so males if they had traits that I admired and whose faults I was able to live with.
One of my best stud dogs was just an ok dog. He was a champion, had a beautiful head but not much body. He sired 13 champions in very few litters. Some people chose not to breed to him because they didn't like him, even though they loved his puppies. I always thought this philosophy didn't make much sense.
I think people choose stud dog incorrectly because they are looking for that "perfect" dog. Very often the best stud dogs are dogs we don't expect.
Just remember that it is difficult for a great male dog to out-produce himself.

Are you saying that you would breed based on a pedigree so long as the male had some of the attributes needed for a particular bitch or are you saying, based on the stud's get you would use him although not as impressed with the actually stud? Or both?
Just trying to understand because my husband and I disagree on the use of a male that we own. He definitely has the pedigree and does have some nice attributes, but I feel like this bitch is superior in almost every aspect though.
Thanks

This particular dog did have an excellent pedigree, but we learned quickly that he was also an outstanding stud dog. He truly did not have many attributes that I wanted, but he threw them (confusing, huh?). However.. some of the faults he did have sprung up in the generations that followed where I line bred on him.
What made us decide to use him? Strength of pedigree. We continued to use him based on the incredible quality of several of his puppies from several different bitches of varying lines. That does not always work, however.
It is very difficult making breeding decisions. You will always second guess yourself. Much of it is gut instinct and a whole lotta luck.
I always visualize the dogs I want to end up with and let that help me chart a course.
And be prepared for mistakes. And for results that defy logic.
(:

Basically to simplify a long explanation, letīs put it this way:
You canīt borrow a bitch to produce a litter but you can "borrow" (meaning paying for a stud fee) a male.
And to keep a male pup means that he will have big shoes to fill, in other words he will have to be better then the stud dogs available.
Other reasons to keep a male is the chance to have a show dog with your kennel name or having a dog with a pedigree you know well and trust (instead of using males that you donīt really know their lines).
So, yes, as most people say, itīs usually better to keep a puppy girl. But if you keep a male that becomes a SUPER dog, itīs like winning the lottery.

leasing of bitches happens in this breed too. I have leased a bitch that the owner didn't want to breed. She ended up being permanently mine in the long run.

yeah, the part that I am having a hard time with is probably just related to my personality. I like things to be concrete...of course with breeding a litter it just isn't. Hopefully, with more time I will become more confident in my "instincts". However, I know that that will involve trial and error....I just don't like the "error" part!

Entries close next Wednesday, September 8th, for the Toledo Bulldog Club back-to-back specialty shows to be held September 25th & 26th. If you don't have a premium list or lost your copy, you can download a premium at http://theblueposts.org/ToledoBulldogClub/premium2010.html. It promises to be a good time with lots of fun, fellowship and, of course, bulldogs! There will be a costume party as well as puppy match on Saturday evening, we have DVDs that will be playing after judging on Saturday including one prepared by Norm & Kevin Davis [Ocobo/Mystyle Kennels in the UK] on grooming the bulldog for the show ring, and lots of good food! Hope you can join us!
from his 4 pt major win under judge Mrs. Houston "Toddie" Clark at the specialty back-up shows last week in Enumclaw, WA
Gabe also placed 2nd in Open A obedience (for his Companion Dog Excellent title) that same day at the all-breed show & earned his second leg the next day. Here he is showing off his goodies from the week-end...
And a couple more fun action photos from our specialty obedience trial...
We're having a "chat" between exercises...
Gabe retrieving his dumbbell...
And, hunkered down for the five-minute down/stay with handlers out of sight...
(he often lays his head right down and proceeds to snore--no use wasting valuable energy! LOL!)
Now I've got to be patient and wait for another show close by--which won't be until November. Guess we'll just keep practicing!
