NOFX?

October 14 2003 at 5:09 PM

Hey, does anybody out there like NOFX? Most of my friends are obsessed with AFI (I like them too, but not fanatically), and everybody thinks NOFX sucks, which is strange because they're one of the few punk bands left that hasn't sold out. In fact, they've rejected the mainstream music industry completely, not giving interviews, not putting videos on Mtv, and having no radio play. Yet they still have a large fanbase. This should be a lesson to all the Good Charleotte wannabes out there: You can make it on your own, as long as you've got something to say. Comments?

NOFX is pretty decent. But I like Good Charolette better, because they sell Good Charolette shirts at hot topic.

Seriously, I do like NOFX. Much better than AFI. NOFX seems a heckuva lot less whiney.

Yeah. They're like middle-aged and still turning out awesome music. They even had the stones to name their latest tour the "Not My President Tour." But they had to change it because some people started whining. I don't get it. Freedom of expression does go both ways right?

Theoretically, yes. But the majority's veiws will always be more valid than the minority's. Except in the case where the minority is pushier, then it can be a toss up.

Um

October 15 2003, 5:31 PM

This thread has gotten way off topic. And what's wrong with hippies? Sure, they may smell bad and have terrible hygiene, and…what was my point? Oh yeah, it's that hippies were no more than conscerned Americans, and they felt that they deserved the same rights as everyone else. I know I'll get bashed for this, but I really don't care anymore.

Yeah, we're off the topic, but that's half the fun!

And you're right, you will get bashed for that, because you've got the facts wrong. Hippies (those of the free love, commune lifestyles, and poor hygene) were unhappy middle class kids who felt unhappy about their affluent upbringings. They had all of the same rights as evveryone else, but chose not to fit in to dominant society.

Well, I was wrong, you didn't get bashed!

Um

October 16 2003, 7:47 PM

What do you mean, chose not to fit in? They can dress or act however they want, as long as they don't harm anyone else in the process. And so what if they weren't like everyone else? While they do burn flags, it is their right as an American citizen to do so. But the police, as I said before, felt freedom of expression only went one way.

I think f-foxy meant...

October 16 2003, 8:33 PM

They don't hold the ideas and values as the "typical" american. Most would rather follow WideSpreadPanic or Phish on tour then go to college and try to become a good little capitalist. Nothing wrong w/that, but we're taught from birth it seems to stay in school, finish college, get a corperate job, buy a house, get a new car, become Jr VP, buy a bigger house, etc, etc. Hippies typically don't value material possesions as much as the average american.

That kind of thinking often stems from a comfy childhood (middleclass) but not nessecarily the best home enviroment. Lower class kids don't have the luxury of that sort of time off, and upper class kids are afraid their parents will cut them off. So typically hippies come from a middle class background.

Hippies actually throw pretty good parties. Just don't talk about politics, religion, or hygene, and you'll be alright.

Re: Um

You're pretty close, J-town....

Historically, hippies were middle class kids who rebeled against their background by becoming poor. No poor person would ever do that, thus only middle class and up would choose this path.

By moving to communes, using massive amounts of experimental drugs, and not cutting their hair, they were choosing to not follow the dominant culture. (Bad hygeine is a byproduct of commune living and drug use.)

Dee, I think you're getting true hippies mixed up with late 60s/early 70s anti-Vietnam culture. In some cases they were the same people, but not all. Many of the protestors adopted hippie exteriors to show their dis-engagement from the dominant culture, but were not true hippies. Hippies wanted to, as the credo goes, "Tune in, turn on, drop out."

J-Town, you seem to be alluding to the "modern hippie," which, as far as I can tell, is a rather silly romanticization of the whole 60s/70s counter culture wrapped up in one big stinky package. Not to be confused with the simmilar "trustafarian," who usually sports dreds and tie-dyed Bob Marley T's.

I think the real hippies were kind of silly in what they were doing, but I harbor them no ill-will. Why do I hate "modern hippies?" When they're in college, there is NO EXCUSE as to why they can't bathe regularly. And many of them have very smarmy attitudes.

PS: Please, anyone who has been there, let me know if I'm making any mistakes. I'm cobbling this together from info I got from many sources, so some of it's bound to be a little off.

I was refering to the current version

October 16 2003, 10:54 PM

The only real difference is that the so-called "modern" hippy isn't wrapped in nostalgia. We tend to look back on the 60's as a time of free love when we think of the counter-culture, rather than focus on the turbulence that lead to said culture. The 60's were a time of disallusion in part because it was really the first time that the children of most families didn't have to enter the workforce to support their home. Thus an established work ethic that was prevailent up until this time feel to the wayside.

The modern hippy is generally the same thing: Someone who doesn't see working in the system everyday as part of a normal life.

Hippies....

When I was growing up the "hippies" that hung out in the neighborhood and that my Mother knew did not smell bad. It must be naturalist hippies that stunk.

Re: I was refering to the current version

October 19 2003, 11:28 PM

The ones I'd call hippies are the ones who ape the hippie "mold," if you will, those who have long scraggly hair, those who don't bathe, those who smoke the ganj on a regular basis, those who wear tye-dye and patchwork cordoroy pants, those who gripe about love and peace and the environment and hunger and what ever else until I'm so sick of it I don't cae anymore.

I'm not sure your definition of a hippie is narrow enough. Just sounds like like the definition of any version of a counter culture to me.

The ones I was talking about, where this discussion started (it's all about me, remember) are those Foxy identifies.  J-town, some of your's'd fit the bill, but you're too general.

Grind Session

January 6 2005, 4:52 PM

NOFX - Linoleum actually appeared in a Playstation skateboard game called Grind Session. So they sold out once, at least. Then again, that game was all but forgotten.

Incidentally, I'm listening to the Beatles - All You Need Is Love right now.

NOFX does suck

September 5 2005, 7:15 PM

The only people who like NOFX are the uninformed, the uneducated, those with out individual thought or even a central cortex, and same mindless lemmings who would follow Green Day to the cliff. Also, NOFX has sold out: the moment they got into politics outside of a few subjective opinions in thier lyrics. And, all their music does sound the same - it just gets shittier as time goes on.
