Unidentified part, Sony KV27V36 television

Our Sony Model KV27V36 television stopped working a few days ago (no picture & later, no sound). It isn't worth fixing--unless I do it (the television was bought on 11/1/97). In the process of working on it I now have an unidentified part--a rubber brace of some sort. A photo of the part (with caption) is at .
