61" Phillips TV repair

My 61" Phillips Projection is having issues. The picture shrinks down to about 2/3 the size with rounded corners, and rounded edges (top,bottom,left,right) as well as the color washes out (as the convergence seems to be mixing wrong when this happens. It will grow back up to normal and look fine (including the convergence) for a few seconds every now and then but eventually shrink in and out back to the rounded / washed out colors.

The T.V. was fine one day, the next it started having this odd shrink / color issue. Its gotten progressively worse, now completely un-watchable.

I'm wondering if I can fix this for a few hundred bucks rather than buy a new TV. I don't mind tinkering with it and givnig some repairs a shot though as I already have clearance from the wife to purchase another.

Any ideas short of calling a service tech?

unless you know exsactly what your doing , call a repair guy , you can cause more dammage and it will end up costing you more in the long run

Yes I have the same problem and it happened in the same manner as yours. What did you find out about this and did you get it fixed? Mine is about 7 years old, how old was your? Please respond using Philips in the message title. I don't open e-mails from anyone I don't know, but this is important.

Thank you and hope to hear what the solition is. I have called service techs in my area and have not found the soltion as of yet.

Is the chassis a PTV840 series? Change out optocoupler IC 7412 on that chassis. Causes the symptom you describe. Also I wouldn't be surprised if the coolant in the blue and green CRTs has turned to crud by now!

Could this be a convergence problem? Not familiar with that set and if it uses STKs.

I would venture to say that your problem is in the power supply. Check the feedback circuit for power regulation as it sounds like the power supply voltages are dropping and the returning to normal. Probally a bad electrolytic capacitor/condenser or optic isolator ic in the secondary of the power switching supply.

I would suggest that you take that unit to a repair shop that has been recommended to you by word of mouth by your friends,relatives,co-workers or neighbours as that is the proper way to find an honest and qualified tech,they may be an authorized shop for that brand or they may not,they may be a store front or home based but they would be qualified to fix it as stated by the many notices manufacturers place on the back of their equipment for customers to read and respect.

If you attempt to repair the item yourself you will definetely not fix it but instead create more problems,a risk of fire and personal injury and afterwards a lawyer will come to you and tell you "lets sue this tech for $XXX XXX as it won't cost you a nickle or a dime,you penny pincher,spend thrift,nickle & dimer,low baller,cheapskate,tightwad,freeloader,toe picker and hustler" and the lawyer would screw you just like a car mechanic and the only thing you would get out of it is a free jar of vaseline and a pillow.

Finally it takes years of formal training to acquire this knowledge usually by community college/vocational school (some by correspondense courses or the like) as well as training afterwards by manufacturers or from everyday personal experience working on stuff combined with expensive dedicated test equipment,service manuals and in some cases repair tips that we share through the internet.
In plain English:

take it to a repair shop as we have to make a living just like you" also if it was just cleaning,a loose wire,or a burnt fuse we would be rich.By way that tech that replies to customers on this site should stop even if it requires sacrificing his dominating authority and attention whoring.

I would like to take the time out to do, what I would assume, most people that have found the information useful regarding a post that may be a extremely outdated. Even if the reply to the original poster may not have helped that person out, know that you are extremely likely to help out someone in the future who has the exact or almost exact problem that was described and to which you responded. Thanks again, and don't give the real idiots like the ones worried about the date of the original post a moments worth of thought since you are doing exactly what this forum was originally given life to do, and that is TO HELP PEOPLE

*To the real idiot(s) I know you feel obligated (because of the internets ability to hide your identity and protect you from having your thought process adjusted, in what most cases would be a physical one) to obsessively scour forums for any little thing that might allow you to bolster your own ego by pointing out how much smarter you are than the average Joe and I know you really are just a scared little kid inside, still, Take 10 seconds and before you respond to someones post, pick up a hammer or other heavy object and SLAM it down hard on your own hand to remind you that you shouldn't be posting in the first place!
