We have a Hitachi 50ux58B TV, and it seems that something in it died. Now, the colors, especially on the right side of the screen, aren't alligned properly. The center of the screen still looks great, and the left side is pretty good, but the right side, especially as you get farther towards the edge, looks really horrible (on ABC, we see 3 different colored ABC watermarks).
It's a rear projetion TV. It's probably 7-8 years old. It has both auto and manual screen convergence stuff, but the auto doesn't finish. It's called magic focus, and I suppose it uses the M A G I C letters as a timer... First you see MAGIC, then -AGIC, then --GIC, but when it shows --GIC it's green, and it just gets stuck there and does nothing until it seems to time out and it just goes back to the TV channel. Then, I tried the manual screen convergence where it puts crosshairs on the screen. I got the center pretty much perfect, which is why it looks good now, but as the crosshairs reach the outter edge of the screen they are impossible to line up. They just start bending. Also, for some reason, it only lets me move the red and blue crosshairs, green isn't an option.
I don't think it hit anything. I mean, it's been in the same place for years. When it started doing this yesterday, my dad gave it a smack, but I don't think that was it.
I've heard that there's a lot of talent here for fixing TVs, so hopefully somebody can help me out too.
Thanks in advance!

You have a bad convergence chip. This vintage of Hitachi may have 3 of them, one for each color. They may be STK 4274 in this chassis. The magic focus will never work unless all 6 convergence amps are functioning properly.

Ever heard of a soldering iron? Know how to use one? Determine which color is out of convergence and change the appropriate IC.
Better yet, call for an experienced TV tech who can do it for you properly.
