| Can anybody explain to me how closed captions work? Is there somebody that types the words on the screen as you watch it, or does a computer somehow do it? . I was just wondering, because there are a lot of miss spelled words sometimes. Also I have noticed at times, the miss spelled words are yellow and sometimes red in color too. Most of the time they are black & white, but when the spelling screws up, the words and symbols turn yellow / red. Symbols and numbers such as -----$ &^16 @8! is what it looks like. Thanks to anyone who can explain it to me. |

Rob, if you can't explain how CC works, then please don't even acknowledge my question. I am a beginner to the electronic's repair and am only trying to acquire info. I was asked how it worked, and could not explain completely, so I thought I would ask somebody who would know. TED |

The answer to your question, sometimes yes, sometimes no. The only time a program is captioned live would be if it is airing live. Prerecorded shows have pretyped captions. The reason you see misspellings and odd characters is because the caption data is transmitted in the data stream right above the scan lines for the video image and the way it is done tends to lead to data loss unless the input signal is 100% strong. Sources such as DVDs and video tapes will not have the same errors as cable or over the air broadcasts.
And if the FAKE "ganges man" would please quit jerking off on their keyboard, it's REALLY annoying! |

Thank you very much, you have enlightened my knowledge. Now that I know how captions work, I will feel more confident the next time I am asked a question about closed captions. Ted |

Well, the fact that the "rob" post has no identifying login associated with it means it could be ANYBODY that posted that rude response! |
