What does the resistor do? if its a surge limiter it must be the wrong value and you are liable to blow the chopper. The higer the resistance of the limiter the slower the reaction of the chopper will be so the chopper will conduct when it should not and get hot. I suspect you have increased the ohms thinking that will fix it.
