Magnavox projection screen issues

I have one of those large 53" Magnavox Projection screen televisions. Old as this t.v is, my wife and i picked it up for 50.00 from a friend who was just upgrading to a newer model. The color is awry. I can adjust the color, sharpness, brightness, etc... but to no avail . The picture always looks to be predominately whatever color tends to take up the majority of the image, ergo, if there is a lot of green in the picture, like looking at a forest scene, then the whole tv screen is green tinted, red, gets same results, as does blue. On the three color tubes, when poweredon and the screen protective cover off, the blue and green color tubes show their color brightly, and clearly, however, the red appears to be scrambled and has lines all through it. Is this something that can be adjusted, or cleaned, and if so, how. I'm a mechanic and electrician, also an hvac service/repair tech. I have the aptitude, though not the much needed experience or diagrams to KNOW what i'm doing here, but have all the confidence that i can do it.
the way i see it, whatever money is spent on this television should be worth it, it beats paying for a new one, especially at todays prices for something this size.
Also, does anyone know where i can find a new screen protective cover (the clear cover that sits over the actual screen) for this thing? my kids have put many scratches on it. I have an assortment of various electronic tools, and meters, any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

HI BEN, YES I AGREE SINCE YOU ARE A MECHANIC, I'M SURE YOU CAN DO THE REPAIRS ON THE TV. FIRST OF ALL LOOK DOWN IN TO EACH PIX TUBE TO SEE IF IT IS CLOUDY OR SCUMY. MAGNAVOX TV'S ARE FAMOUS FOR BAD COOLANT FLUID, JUST LIKE THE ANTI-FREEZE NEEDS CHANGED IN A CAR, THE PIX TUBES NEED THE COOLANT CHANGED ALSO. IT IS MOST LIKLY THE GREEN AND BLUE TUBES MOSTLY. WHEN YOU LOOK DOWN INTO THEM THEY SHOULD LOOK CLEAR. YOU CAN GET THE COOLANT FLUID FROM ABOUT ANY ELECTRONICS STORE $30.00 GET THREE 12 OZ. CANS. NEXT IF THE FLUID NEEDS CHANGED, THEN USE A MAGIC MARKER TO MARK EVERYTHING, POSITION, WIRES, ETC. DRAW A DIAGRAM, TAKE A DIGITAL PICTURE. NEXT ON EACH TUBE YOU HAVE TO REMOVE IT TO DO THE JOB RIGHT. WELL THATS ALL FOR NOW. I WILL WAIT TO SEE IF YOU EVEN HAVE TO CHANGE FLUID FIRST, AND THEN GIVE YOU FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. GOOD LUCK ---J.C. PHILLIPS TECH
