I have a mitsubishi WS65905 1080i Diamond.
I purchased it without a remote control.
I cannot get one to work with my TV.
The prior owners had it built in,
Could they have somehow had this function disabled?
Any help would be appreciated.

No, the only method that could setup a switch of remote would be by the remote, so if done could never be undone so its not a function. Ypu may have a senser fault.

my step son bought the other set which is just like mine
from the same person, and he can't get a remote to work either?

I would think your generic remote does not suit the TV or is not set up correctly. Remote receivers not working is not a common fault but can at times happen.
