I have a 13 year old Pioneer rear projection TV. Last night with the smell of burning electronics, the picture disappeared. Logically it appears to still work -- there is audio and if you hook up a monitor to the video there is video output.
I tend to tinker with stuff, but I really have zero working knowledge here. And I know that there are things inside that can send me to an electrified early demise. But it seems like something simple is amiss here.
...and if the consensus is "you will kill yourself, take it to a shop" then my next question is: Is it worth repairing? Its non-HD (though I never watch off an antenna, so logically this would still work for me well into the future). But I don't want to spend a whole lot of money repairing a TV if that could go towards replacing it. I am also not just itching to get into HD. Quite honestly, the current picture off Directv is "good enough". I am just not that picky.

There a simple rule Techs use to help people understand how Tv's age.... Tv's age like Cats so if your cat is 13 years old........ A set this age will have a bazzilion cold solder joints and weak capacitors, but the "kiss of death" in this case is that you smelled a compont that blew up this is a real bad thing
