My toshiba tv failed after 1 yr 8 months. The service tech diagnose the the failur as a bad lcd panel, hard to belive. I am looking for a second opinion. When I turn on the tv the screen will light up and the tv channel will be visible for only a second then disappears leaving the screen blank.
However the sound and the ability to change channels works correctly. Could it be the LCD controller?

I am sorry but you seem to believe TV has become more reliable. The bad news is you are incorrect. What has happened is par for the course. Sure there are better and worse, but on average 3 years for that is a good run so where you are is average. The fault as stated, probably is what it is, without testing and seeing its tough to be certain. On average for LCD and Plasma, devide new price by 3 and thats about the repair cost. And yes Santa Claus comes once a year if you are a good boy, but looking to be lucky is not realistic.
