I have a Sony Trinatron 32" 6 years old. While watching the picture went blue tine for about 2 second then black. turn off and on same thing. Called repair service asked how much to check it out he said $75. A guy comes out I turn it on and it does as I said. He says he will have to take it in and it will be 150.00. I tell him what I was told and he waves the 75 pick up charge. I get a call 24 hours latter and am told it is a short in the picture tube. He then tells me his brother in law has a sony 36" he will sell me for $300. It makes me wonder if mine will be for sell next week to someone else who called them for service. I don't miond buying a NEW set if mine is cost prohibitive to fix. But don't want to be scamed.

The chances are it is a short in the picture tube, with Sony thats common. Its not all gloom though there is a fix. The short is a short between heater and cathode of your blue gun. Now one end of the heaters are at ground, so any short to the cathode basically shorts the thing to ground and it conducts flat out. This may not make sense to you if you dont know electronics so sorry bout that but there is no easy way to explain. Now the heaters need 6.3V to work and the easy fix is to cut the print on the tube base so that all connections to the heaters has gone. Get a piece of well insulated wire and wrap 2 winds around a free bit of limb of the flyback transformer so you end up in one area with only one wind, Glue it or tape it so that there is no chance of it getting near the overwind, then connect the ends of the wire to the tube pins. Daughters TV has worked for 7 years modified like that. Should take about 20 mins to fix. And no its not my modification, Its Sony Australia.
