NZ murder trial jury faces 'formidable task'
Posted 1 hour 36 minutes ago
New Zealanders are anxiously waiting to hear the verdict in what has been described as the country's most extraordinary murder trial.
David Bain is being re-tried for the murders of his father, mother, brother and two sisters in 1994.
The 37-year-old's lawyers say the father shot the other victims and then killed himself.
The case has fascinated New Zealanders for 15 years.
Jury members began deliberations this morning, but returned to court to ask the judge a few questions.
They wanted the rules relating to reasonable doubt re-stated.
Justice Graham Panckhurst told them they must be 100 per cent sure.
"It is not enough that you are persuaded that he's probably guilty or even very likely guilty," he said.
The judge told the jury of seven women and five men that they face a "formidable task". |
