My question is what happened to positions and occupations reserved legally for Papua New Guineans?

What do the riots mean?

We live in a global community and anybody anywhere can do business as long as they got the money and international, national laws are followed.
Its been a sad scenario for PNG to witness such mayhem. Asians are very hard working people even for less and they are very determined to achieve what they want to.
The nation should thank and appreciate those third-second generation Asians who have been living in the country and help build PNG and regard it as home.
By the report on the two daily papers, I presume the target is to those Asians who are running businesses reserved for the locals.
In all the surburbs and settle-ments throughout the country, I seem to see Asians running all the outlet tucker shops, selling betelnuts, PMV drivers and tyre services. Cant the Papua New Guineans do this?
I think according to our labour and immigration laws, it states that; foreigners coming into the country should be given a permit if local Papua New Guineans can-not provide the skills or we have shortage of skills in that specific industry of concern.
Its obvious that the businesss activities which the Asians are involved in the country can be done by the locals and be reserved for the locals. The fact of the matter is; how did they get into the country even when they cant speak simple English and meet the requirement of our national laws to involve in business activities the locals can do? Foreign Affairs and Immigration officials locally and abroad should be thoroughly investigated to expose the corruption involved.
There are rumours going around that key government ministers are part of bringing Asians who are involved in various ille-gal business activities in the entertainment industry, forestry and other areas of concern.
What we have witnessed recently is just release of frustration from ordinary Papua New Guineans who are becoming foreigners in their own land and because of a government who cannot provide employment opportunities for the unemployed.
The process of airing the civil societys concern to the Parlia-ment does seem to work at times and its possible such scenarios will continue to happen if the responsible authorities dont deal with it as soon as possible. It was also good to notice that the government has established the bi-partisan team but I hope it continues to find out the real cause of the issue and deal with it hands on.
As far as history is concerned, the government has a record of hiding things under the carpet. To name a few, guns control summitt (never tabled in Parliament), the Moti Saga,Taiwan diplomatic scandal and many others we know of. I think they will deal with this more faster unless a key government minister is invloved directly or otherwise.

I can't help but notice that the 2nd-3rd generation Asians never spoke out against their newly invading Asian brothers and sisters as the latter ones started taking over jobs that Papua New Guineans should be filling.

They only have themselves to blame if they're kicked out with all the rest.

That's my strong feeling.

Grr.. Reading all the comments about 'asians' taking over 'our' jobs.. Frack! Are you people primitive or what!

If a Papua New Guinean couldn't get off their ass and build a business before 'asians' came in to PNG, what makes you think they deserve to be given the businesses these 'asian' people have built from scratch?

These people would have got the job because they're hard working and pro-active.

You can't sit on your ass and expect jobs to be given to you. If you sincerely believe you missed out on a job opportunity because you were not 'asian' there are laws against this kind of discrimination. Likewise you can't take a job off a person because they're 'asian'.

I don't dismiss the inference that there may be an influx of illegal immigrants etc. However playing the 'woe was me' card is pathetic. Get educated, get ahead!

Let them have all the remedial jobs, PNGeans should strive for more than being shop assistants.

Many a Papua New Guinean has succeeded in life through their own honest hard work. We never seem to hear about them in the papers, because they just get on with the job.

Angered realist.
