Kolzig, Hecht named to German World Cup team By John McGourty | NHL.com | May 17, 2004
As if one "Olie the goalie" isn't hard enough to beat, the German team in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey will have two,
Washington Capitals netminder Olaf Kolzig, the 2000 Vezina Trophy winner, and Oliver Jonas, a standout performer at Harvard University who was named to the 1999 ECAC All-Rookie team in his sophomore season and won the 2001 Ken Dryden Award as the ECAC's First All-Star team goaltender.
Kolzig, Jonas and Buffalo Sabres center Jochen Hecht are among 26 players named to the German World Cup team.
San Jose Sharks forwards Marco Sturm and Christian Ehrhoff were also named along with NHL defensive prospects Dennis Seidenberg of the Philadelphia Flyers and Christoph Schubert of the Ottawa Senators.
Forward Marcel Goc, who spent the regular season with the AHL Cleveland Barons and was added to the Sharks' Stanley Cup Playoff roster, was also named, as was his older brother, Sascha, a former New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman now playing with the Mannheim Eagles of the German Elite League.
The German team will also include the brother of another veteran NHL player, Martin Reichel, whose brother, Robert, played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2003-04. The brothers were born in Litvinov, Czech Republic, and Robert Reichel was a member of the Czech's 1998 Olympic gold-medal team. Martin Reichel has played in Germany for over a decade.
In 2002 at Salt Lake City, Robert and Martin Reichel became only the second pair of brothers to oppose each other in Olympic hockey competition.
Three goalies, eight defensemen and 15 forwards were named to the team. German officials said they expect to name the coach this summer. Hans Zach recently stepped down after six years as head coach of Germany's national team.
Kolzig, 34, has been the Capitals' starting goalie for the past eight seasons after spending parts of five seasons with the team. He led the Capitals to the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals, tying a record with four shutouts in the Playoffs. He is 234-220-63 in 544 NHL games with a career 2.56 goals-against average.
Jonas played last season for the Berlin Polar Bears of the German Elite League. Before college, he attended Breck High School in Minneapolis on the recommendation of his uncle, Helmut de Raaf, the longtime goalie for the German National team. Jonas played three games for Germany in the 2003 World Championship, earning two wins and a tie.
Sturm, 25, is one of the fastest skaters in the National Hockey League. The seven-year veteran has 122 goals and 135 assists for 257 points in 530 NHL games, all with the Sharks. Before he broke his leg on March 5, Sturm had 21 goals and 20 assists in 64 games.
Hecht, 26, played four seasons for Mannheim before joining the St. Louis Blues in 1998. He played parts of three seasons in St. Louis before being traded to the Edmonton Oilers who traded him to Buffalo after one season. He suffered a broken arm at the start of last season and missed 17 games. After that, he was plagued by a recurring shoulder problem. Hecht has 73 goals and 123 assists for 196 points in 333 NHL games.
Canadian-born defenseman Robert Leask and versatile forward Jan Benda were also named. They were junior teammates on the 1991-92 Oshawa Generals with Fred Brathwaite, Jason Arnott, Stephane Yelle and Eric Lindros. Benda played nine games with the Washington Capitals in 1997-98. He has played in six different countries and spent the past three seasons with AK Bars Kazan in the top Russian league. He led the team in scoring two years ago. The Belgian-born Benda has represented Germany at the World Championships, the World Cup and the Winter Olympics.
Leask never played in the NHL and has been with the Berlin Polar Bears for the past eight seasons.
Rounding out the squad are goalie Robert Muller, defensemen Mirko Ludemann, Christoph Schubert, Andreas Renz and Lasse Kopitz; and forwards Stefan Ustorf, Daniel Kreitzer, Tobias Abstreiter, Tomas Martinec, Eduard Lewandowski, Thomas Greilinger, Klaus Kathan, Tino Boos, Andreas Morczinietz and Stephan Retzer.
Muller, Schubert, Seidenberg, Renz, Ludemann, Ehrhoff, Kreutzer, Kathan, Ustorf, Benda, Abstreiter, Reichel, Morczinietz, Marcel Goc, Sturm, Hecht and Kolzig were all members of the 2002 German Olympic team.
Ustorf played 54 games with the Capitals in the late 1990s after being taken in the third round of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He has represented Germany in three Olympics, three World Junior Championships, three World Championships and the 1996 World Cup.
Ustorf and Kreutzer will be expected to provide scoring punch while Abstreiter, excellent on faceoffs, and Reichel play strong two-way games. Martinec is a banger who can help out the offense. Renz, Benda and Retzer can play forward or defense.
