i'm confused about something. i've only been a die-hard hockey fan for 6-8 years or so now. i've learned a lot in that time. one of the big things i've learned is that hockey fans long for old time hockey. rough, tough, hard skating, hard hitting hockey. now here i am watching the '79 semifinals--DSC and Bowman behind the benches, the notorious terry o'reilly on the ice, and it's like fucking ice dancing out there. not one hit in the entire 2+ periods i watched. is this not "old time hockey"? because if it is, it looks less physical than allstar games of today.

Those weren't among the more penalized teams of the era.  Boston "only" had 1,222 PIMs that season, Montreal 803 . . . check out this group (the Flyers); they had over 2,600 minutes in 1980-81, coached by none other than Pat Quinn . . .
