AHL, PHPA announce CBA extension

SPRINGFIELD, Mass./ST. CATHARINES, Ont. … The American Hockey League and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association today announced the extension of the AHL-PHPA Collective Bargaining Agreement through August 31, 2007.

This agreement will reduce the number of veterans allowed to dress for a given game from seven this year to six next season to five the season after that and beyond.  The AHL defines a veteran as any player with 260 or more games of experience in the NHL, AHL, International Hockey League or European Elite Leagues.

Certainly making it harder for older players to find a home...but it is a necessity if they want to be a developmental league.

And it also points toward a lockout of massive proportions at the NHL level- otherwise, why the 2 additional slots for this next season and 1 additional for the season after that?
