RALEIGH, N.C. (CP) - The Montreal Canadiens acquired forward Radek Bonk and goaltender Cristobal Huet on Saturday in a three-way trade that sent goaltender Mathieu Garon and the 95th overall pick in the draft to the Los Angeles Kings.
Ottawa initially sent Bonk to Los Angeles for the 77th pick in the draft before the Kings flipped him to the Habs for Garon and a pick.
Bonk was due to become a restricted free agent July 1 and the Senators would have had to pay him a $3.5-million US qualifying offer to retain his rights.
The Czech centre had 12 goals with 32 assists in 66 regular-season games with the Senators in the 2003-04 season. In the playoffs, he had just two assists in seven games.
Bonk was the third overall pick by the Senators in the 1997 NHL entry draft.
Huet, from France, posted a 10-16-10 record for the Kings with a 2.43 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage.
Garon appeared in 19 regular-season games with the Canadiens as backup to Jose Theodore. The Montreal netminder went 8-6-2 with a 2.27 goals-against average with a .921 save percentage.
Garon, drafted 44th overall by the Canadiens in 1996, is due to make $1.1 million in his next season in the NHL.
