NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Rangers will remove the interim tag from coach Tom Renney, according to several local media reports.
The Rangers have a teleconference scheduled for Tuesday, but a Rangers spokesman declined to comment on the team's decision Monday night.
Renney, 49, took over when Glen Sather stepped down Feb. 25 and went 5-11-0-4 as the team purged its high-priced and ineffective roster.
The Rangers finished with 69 points last season, missing the playoffs for the seventh straight season, a franchise record.
Renney won out over former Blues coach Joel Quenneville and Rangers minor-league coach Ryan McGill. Before taking over for Sather, Renney was an assistant coach and scout for the Rangers.
Sather, who remained as president and general manager, also interviewed former Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice and former Coyotes coach Bobby Francis.
Renney was coach of the Vancouver Canucks from June 1996 to November 1997.
Terry O'Reilly and Ted Green, last year's assistant coaches, will not return, according to a story on Newsday's website.
