..would Ted quietly fold the Caps & cut his losses;especially with a baseball team  in DC now competing?

I think it unlikely in the short term ,inasmuch as Lincoln has first right of refusal on purchase of the Wizards when Abe Pollin steps down. But, looking out a few years, I don't think the possibility can be discounted. Leonsis has his work cut out for him in marketing this team. Think of it this way . . . since Jaromir Jagr was signed in July 2001, the Caps have had 21 sellouts in 123 home games and averaged 15,949 in paid attendance. And last year, attendance was more than 15 percent lower than in Jagr's first year with the club. Jagr isn't and wasn't the problem, it's just that not even a star could fill the seats on a consistent basis (nothing replaces winning). What is the club going to do after a year off and without a player that anyone could hope to pick out of a one-person lineup?

here is one take on the situation league wide: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=1981387
