First-Round Pick in 2003 Agrees to Three-Year Deal With Washington
WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 28, 2005 - The Washington Capitals signed right wing Eric Fehr (FAIR), the team’s first-round selection, 18th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, to a three-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Eric is an exceptional young player who has shown continued improvement since we drafted him two years ago,” said McPhee. “We are happy to have him under contract and look forward to his future with the Capitals.”
Last season Fehr, 19, appeared in 71 games for the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League and was named the WHL Player of the Year. He also captured the Bobby Clarke Trophy as the league’s top scorer with 111 points. He led the league in goals (59) and power-play goals (31) and set a league record with five overtime goals. In 24 playoff games, he led Brandon to the WHL finals while scoring 16 goals and adding 16 assists for a league-leading 32 points.
In four seasons with the Wheat Kings, the 6’4”, 200-pound, Brandon, Man., native recorded 155 goals and 131 assists for 286 points in 279 games. During the 2003-04 season he tied for second in the WHL in goals (50) and ranked eighth in points (84) in 71 games, leading his team in both categories.
