Roger:
Right click on "My computer" (in your start menu or on your desktop), then left click on "System Properties".
Click on "Hardware" (at the top of the window), then on "Device Manager". You should see something like this:
If everything's OK, all the categories are closed (there's a "+" before their icon).
If something's wrong, the category is opened and there's an exclamation mark where the problem resides. In your case, it should be in the "Sound, video and game controllers" category, but you might also have an "Other devices" category like in this example, with question marks.
Please let me know if you find exclamation marks.
