4:00 in, I'd say the caps have had the better of play so far with 5 SOGs, but they need results.

Back to ES.... a really great pass from Backstrom won't get any notice, because Ovechkin shoots it just wide- but I'm telling you, NB threaded that across ice, through tons of traffic and put it right on Ovie's stick. Should be a highlight, but won't get a sniff.

Meanwhile, the Pens jump out to an early 1-0 lead, Malone from Whitney and Gonchar. Buf-Ott is scoreless halfway through the 1st, and the other games that might affect the Caps (including the Flyers-Rangers- don't know how I missed that one) are just about to start.

4:30 left, TV timeout. The Caps had an odd man break, but a Cane juuuuust got a stick in the way of the pass, and broke it up... then, a great flurry in front of Ward, and he stops everything except Ovechkin's shot, which hits crossbar and bounces harmlessly away....

Under 2:00 left 1st... great road opening period by the Caps, but no results yet. Wesley with a shot, Huet save... Cole shot, Huet covers... under 1:00... 'Canes get a PP with :23.9 left... :13.3, they score on a strange deflection off Gordon. The guy was passing cross ice, and it hit Gordon's skate and deflected into the goal from about 40 feet away. Everyone had turned to the side where the pass would have been received.
1-0 Canes, end 1st.

At least, they're playing good, which is the most important thing. To me, with their fire power, and Huet in goal, they can win any game, especially against Southeast division teams. As long as they don't forget to play, like in Chicago.

And now a 5 on 3 for :37. They actually should have had a full 2:00 2MA, as Fehr was crosschecked right in front of the ref as the first penalty was called. In Laughlin's words "he looked away from the play right in front of him".
Nothing on the 2MA, back to the 5 on 4...

Wow- Jurcina saw Walker coming for him, and got out of the way- Walker crashed into the boards full force, and is down and out writhing on the ice. I'd suspect major injury, and he did it to himself.
edit: he hit the boards face first. He was helped off the ice during that TV timeout, and is in the locker room.

Caps must not give any point to the 'Canes... but actually, it would not be that terrible (as long as they win). I think the Caps could overtake the Flyers in a few games, and if they win every game, the Panthers and the Leafs won't catch them... the Sabres would be the only dangerous team (but they're only 4-4-2 in their last 10 games). The Bruins can also win tonight and lose several in a row (they're 2-4-4 in their last 10).
