Preview: Stars at Capitals
Washington going for 16th straight home win; Kari Lehtonen in net for Dallas
by Katie Brown / NHL.com Correspondent

STARS (26-29-10) at CAPITALS (44-13-7)

7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CSN-DC, NHL.TV

Stars team scope

Goaltender Kari Lehtonen will start for the Dallas Stars, who are seven points out of the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference with 62 points. The Stars have won four of their past six games after losing seven of their previous eight. They are 8-18-4 on the road and 1-6-0 in their past seven games on the road. "We're in a position [where] we need to win every game almost and you've got to approach it that way," coach Lindy Ruff said. "Tonight's as big a game as it comes. We gave a game away at home against the Islanders [5-4 loss Thursday], but we won a hard-fought one in Florida [2-1 Saturday] and now to stay within reach we have to win tonight." The Stars have points in 11 consecutive games against the Washington Capitals (9-0-2) dating to Nov. 30, 2006, and have won their past five games at Verizon Center.

Capitals team scope

The Capitals won their 15th consecutive home game, 2-1 against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, and are the first team to have a home winning streak of 15 or more games since the Detroit Red Wings, who won 23 consecutive home games in 2011-12. The Capitals lead the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference with 95 points and are 27-5-1 at home this season. "Obviously pulling out wins any time is good," goalie Braden Holtby said. "I think we'd like to try and force them to play a little bit of our game sometimes instead of that, but we played the game we needed to win [Saturday]. There's still areas in every game that we can improve upon and tonight's another opportunity to work on those things and try to get another win." Holtby will make his 50th start of the season. He is 13-0-1 with two shutouts in his past 14 starts and leads the NHL in goals-against average (1.89) and shutouts (eight), and is tied for second with 34 wins. He is the only NHL goaltender this season to rank in the top two in wins, shutouts, GAA and save percentage (.931).

This one is a little too late for me, as I work Tuesdays... I may check in, here, or I may check in the morning.

We shall see.

Holtby makes a fantabulous skate save, but a Star goes behind the net and stuffs the puck inside on the other side. Another Star was actually preventing Holtby from moving back to the other post, though.

Coach challenge. Under review.

Initial call is apparently no goal, but it seems it could be considered as a good goal.

Good goal! The interference only happened once the puck was in the net, I believe.

It was written 'call confirmed', although it was still 0-0 on screen, so I guess the refs had considered it good when it happened.

1-0 Stars.

So (if the initial call was really "good goal" and they're the ones who challenged it) the Caps lost their timeout, but now they get a PP.

Disastrous passing by the Caps on the PP.

Some great chances in the last 30 seconds, though, with Ovechkin, Oshie...

Killed.

I forgot to mention that the Stars hit some iron earlier in the period, and that Holtby was apparently beaten, but it went out.

Now the Caps will have a penalty to kill.

Beagle and Winnik with a great short-handed 2-on-1... and Beagle's pass hits Winnik's skates, alas. What a chance it was!

Good kill overall. Back to even strength.

Caps not hungry enough for my taste.

Caps 3rd-liners with a good moment, and they draw a penalty, with 2:10 left in the period.

Good job by the top unit, and now Vrana, a nice shot with the second unit.

Kuznetsov hit by a stick in the leg. Looks like it hurts but won't be too bad.

Killed, and last 10 seconds of the period are like an extension of the PP, but no good shot.

End of the first period, 1-0 Stars, a bit unfair.

Wilson with a very good shot on his knees!

Oh, crap, Stars score again! 2-0.

From a mistake by Backstrom. sad.gif

Spezza makes it 3-0!

Holtby out, Grubauer in.

I guess that's what happens when you don't play hard enough against a team that needs to win almost every remaining game to make the playoffs.

Caps are at ease when they can create some offense, but are not aggressive enough in defense.

Oh, crap, Oshie rings the pipe and it's out! Actually 1-1 in this department so it's OK. Caps must keep going.

Eakin cross checks Holtby [EDIT: Grubauer, obviously], Niskanen doesn't like it and takes him down. Only a penalty against Eakin, fortunately. Caps on the PP.

Lehtonen stops 3 consecutive whacks at the puck by Vrana and Williams.

Vrana even punches a guy in the ensuing pushing and shoving.

Backstrom trips a Star, and after 26 seconds of 4-on-4 Dallas will get some PP time.

Backstrom!!! A great redirect in front on an equally great pass by Shattenkirk.

3-1 Stars, with 4 minutes left in the period.

A second one would not hurt, and Ovechkin almost gets it!

Ovechkin again, with a guy on his back, he tries with one hand!

Caps playing much better lately.

Caps not willing to let the Stars do anything with the puck. That's how it should be. They must fight for the puck constantly.

Oh, too bad, Backstrom with a potential chance in the very last seconds, but he can't control the puck.

End of the second period, 3-1 Stars. But Caps are looking good, now.

I'm done for this game. I think the Caps can come back, but they should be a bit more aggressive in the first 30 minutes, really.

Oshie scored mid-3rd, but Sharp put it away late.

Oh, well. Next game.
