COYOTES (27-38-9) at CAPITALS (48-17-8)

7 p.m. ET; FS-A, CSN-DC+, NHL.TV

Coyotes team scope

The Arizona Coyotes are 1-3-1 in their past five games since a three-game winning streak and play the fourth game of a five-game road trip against the Washington Capitals. "They've been considered one of the elite Stanley Cup contenders," coach Dave Tippett said. "Real good challenge for our young players, real good challenge to make sure our veterans play well and try to stabilize our group. We'll see what we get." Goaltender Mike Smith is expected to start. Smith is 1-3-1 in his past five games with 12 goals allowed and a .927 save percentage. Captain Shane Doan is expected to miss his fifth consecutive game with a lower-body injury.

Capitals team scope

The Capitals lead the Pittsburgh Penguins by one point and the Columbus Blue Jackets by three points in the Metropolitan Division, Eastern Conference and NHL with 104 points entering play Saturday. Washington is on a three-game winning streak following a 2-1 shootout win against the Blue Jackets on Thursday which ended a 1-4-1 stretch in its previous six games. "I think looking at all nine of these (remaining) games, until we can secure our spot that we would like, they're all must-wins," coach Barry Trotz said. "I can't tell you one that would not be. These ones when you're playing a team you feel that is young and maybe not as experienced, you worry about the readiness but I think we recognize the situation and it'll be on the players. We have no room to let anybody steal points at our arena at any time right now." Braden Holtby, who is 4-0-1 with 10 goals allowed in his past five games, will start in goal. Captain Alex Ovechkin is two goals (554) from tying Johnny Bucyk for 26th place on the NHL's goal scoring list.

Re: Game 73 vs. Arizona Coyotes

I said elsewhere I think Grubauer gets the 3 first games of the B2Bs, and here's why: the playoffs start the 12th, and Verizon Center? Red Hot Chili Peppers at 9:00 PM... so the Caps won't start until the 13th at the earliest. If Holtby doesn't play the 9th (Panthers, last reg season game) but the Bruins on the 8th, he'll have 5 full days off (at least) before the playoffs (Boston is an afternoon game).

Now, the 4th and 5th, same problem- if he plays Tor on the 4th, he'll have almost 5 full days off until Florida. He could do the B2b here, but do you really want him to face CBJ, Tor, NYR, and possibly Bos in the space of 7 days and then have him get 5 days rest? It seems having him get the Rangers and Panthers is the best compressed schedule to keep him in condition going into the playoffs.

I still think Grubauer gets the front end of all 3 B2Bs- Wild, Toronto, and Boston, but who knows?

Winnik with a semi-breakaway, with one hand, loses the puck, gets it back but can't take a shot.

Stephen Whyno @SWhyno
Ovechkin is the third player in NHL history with 30 goals in his first 12 seasons, joining Mike Gartner and Wayne Gretzky.

Yotes to the PP, thug Ovechkin the slasher... killed, no SOGs- in fact, Arizona had the first 2 of the game, and none since (Caps with 11 to here)...

"Ovechkin is the third player in NHL history with 30 goals in his first 12 seasons, joining Mike Gartner and Wayne Gretzky."

Yes, and Ovechkin did that with one of 12 seasons having only 48 games.

1-0 Caps, end 1st.

Leading but lethargic from what I've seen.

End of first period, 1-0 Caps.

I'll see if the replay of Ovechkin's goal is up already. I've also missed it.

If Caps win this one, they'll lead the Pens by 3 points, because Caps had one game in hand.

Ovechkin's power-play goal, from Backstrom and Johansson:

What a pass by Backstrom, once again!

One more 30-goal season and Ovechkin ties Gretzky! He needs three more to tie Gartner, though. That's rather incredible.

Shots are 12-3 Caps. Only two Coyotes have taken a shot (Holland had 2, Fischer 1).

15:29 of the 1st without a SOG, and still 0/2nd... there's a couple, finally.

Yes, Holtby with a couple of saves. Didn't look too hard, though. Caps a bit too passive on this sequence.

Coyotes ring the post! But a few seconds later, Ovechkin draws a penalty. PP.

Same guys for the first 2:50.

Too bad Shattenkirk's passes to Ovechkin were not perfect for one-timers.

And the rest is killed. 6 shots on goal.
