Preview: Rangers at Capitals

Washington clinches Presidents' Trophy with one point against New York

by Katie Brown / NHL.com Correspondent

RANGERS (47-26-6) at CAPITALS (53-18-8)

8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, TVA Sports, NHL.TV

Rangers team scope

New York Rangers forwards Rick Nash, Mats Zuccarello and Jesper Fast, and defenseman Ryan McDonagh, will be rested for the final three games of the regular season, coach Alain Vigneault said Tuesday. All four are expected to be ready for the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. "There are a few guys right now that have some minor bumps and bruises, no one that will not be able to start the playoffs, but it is an opportunity for us to heal those bumps and bruises," Vigneault told the New York Post. "And with those things being said, you also want to go in playing good hockey and playing the right way. We're going to try to manage all those things at the same time." The Rangers hold the first wild card into the playoffs from the Eastern Conference. Goalie Henrik Lundqvist will start in his fifth game since his return from a strained hip muscle.

Capitals team scope

The Washington Capitals can clinch the Metropolitan Division, Eastern Conference and Presidents' Trophy if they get at least one point against the Rangers. Washington leads the Pittsburgh Penguins by five points in the conference and division. Defenseman John Carlson will miss his second game with a lower-body injury and is considered day to day. Carlson was a late scratch prior to the Capitals' 4-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday. "It's nothing serious at all," coach Barry Trotz told the Washington Post. "Where we are right now, we just felt, let's not put anything at risk and let everybody heal." Goalie Braden Holtby will start after Philipp Grubauer made 27 saves Tuesday.

Good secondary scoring in the last game. happy.gif

I won't be able to follow this one, but I should be here for the next one (Saturday, 3 PM).

One point and they clinch all. Hopefully tonight. Let's go, Caps! Have a good game, Roger. happy.gif

Caps 1st line with a great shift and a post but no goal... couple chances for the Rangers, but the first 4:00 has pretty much been all Caps... SOGs are 3-2 Caps after 6:00+, but no really great action yet.

TV timeout.

Orpik has all 3 SOGs so far... icing Caps at 9:49 left, and it's an even game now... more timeout, more unexciting hockey.

SOGs are 5-3 (Orpik with all 3) NYR with 7:18 left 1st... 3:59 left, still 3 SOGs and 11:00 without one...

JT Miller hit in face with puck, off the ice- but he's back on the ice for his next shift... Caps finally get 2 more SOGs, Oshie and Alzner...

0-0 end 1st. Some good action, but mostly zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz considering the implications of this game.

Re: Game 80 vs. New York Rangers

April 5 2017, 9:31 PM

2nd on, 18:55 Caps to the PP... Williams takes care of that, 4 on 4 for 1:12...

and with :09 left on the first penalty it's 4 on 3 Caps (too many men NYR)... back to 4 on 4... now Caps PP for 1:01... Williams iron no goal... Niskanen shot with :08 PP left, but Lundqvist save... all killed, back to ES...

timeout with 13:26 left 2nd... mostly zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz this period, too...

Kreider catches Oshie in the face with a stick, no call and he's cut and slow to get off the ice... Ovechkin, point blank- misses everything... 10:40 left 2nd... 9:03 more timeout...

Oshie back, "has a cut by his (left) eye"... Vesey shot, Holtby save, Vesey and Alzner get into a scrum and it's 4 on 4 again...

Caps to the 4 on 3 PP on a stick hold... several shots... back to 5 on 4...

Ovechkin!

1-0 Caps!

Assists were Kuz and Johansson...

1-0 Caps, end 2nd. Better period for both teams.

Goal was changed late in the evening- Williams from Ovechkin and Kuznetsov.

2nd assist was Williams... lol Backstrom puts one in, but he kicked it... under review... no goal... now with sweet passes, inside 4 feet Backstrom gets iron, and to the other side Ovechkin gets robbed by Hank... 10:00 left reg, 3rd period chances 4-0 Caps...

7:15... icing NYR at 6:13... icing Caps at 5:02... 4:28 and a timeout...

3:45... 2:00... EN... 1:00... :59.4 faceoff near Holtby... icing Caps at :42.5... :15... Holtby save and a scrum at :01.3...

shutout and a President's Trophy.

2-0 final.

Re: Game 80 vs. New York Rangers (W 2-0)

April 6 2017, 8:14 AM

Just watched the video summary. Many great chances for the Caps. Could have easily been 5 or 6-0. But of course the Rangers had 6 good players resting.

The first goal is actually by Williams. The puck was deflected by his skate.

Just before the second goal, after Kuznetsov recovers the puck and sends it to Johansson, Kuznetsov is held by Lindberg. In the struggle, Lindberg loses his stick, but they're all gliding towards the Rangers' net so he manages to pick it up, but it's enough to give Kuznetsov enough room to do what he wants when he gets the puck back. Lindberg hurt his team by trying to stop Kuznetsov illegally. He should have kept skating with him.

PS: Good article about Shattenkirk. I hope he'll stay. Great player. Carlson has slowed down, so we may need to keep this awesome guy.
