Vegas Golden Knights - Opening Night

GMGM is hard to follow. It is true that he had to do everything from scratch, so there were lots of question marks.

They sent down Shipachyov, the third scorer of the KHL last season, that they signed for $9M for two years (3 this year, 4 next year, 2 of signing bonus). Cap space: $4.5M in the NHL, but still $3.475M if he plays in the AHL (they do not have any problem with cap space, though). They wanted him to be their top line center, but apparently he needs more time to adjust to North American hockey, and he is waiver exempt, so it is safe.

They also sent down Hyka, apparently, although he scored something like 5 goals in 6 pre-season games, or the other way round, and looked great. But it is apparently for the same reason, and he is also waiver exempt.

Three of their four best paid forwards and their third best paid defenseman are injured. In total: $18.5M. Those four guys are aged 30 to 33. If you add Shipachyov: $23M of cap space not playing.

They claimed goalie Malcom Subban from waivers and sent Pickard down (on waivers, so they may lose him; if not, they'll try to trade him, apparently).

I was not able to find any info about their opening-night lineup. The roster itself is not known (their website and CapFriendly are apparently at a loss).

Nice article about Nate Schmidt:

They'll play at 5:30 PM in Dallas.

Their website, about the lineup: "At this time, the only seeming likelihood will be that Marc-Andre Fleury will get the start in goal." LOL! That says a lot.

"History in the making for the Golden Knights as they play their first ever regular season NHL game. Head coach Gerard Gallant and his staff will get to see how their roster fares under the bright lights of real NHL competition. Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury will be the most important on the ice tonight and likely every night. Vegas has lots of players that can play a solid two-way game but appear to be a little light on offense. They're going to need to live up to their identity which will be based on their work ethic. Puck management will be key for the nights as they will need to maximize the offence they do produce. Easy goals-against just can't happen for this group."

Interesting typo in the article: "the nights".

Their nickname is already found: the Knights. And I guess the bad one will be the Mites (on Ice).

James Neal, who was injured and did not play in the pre-season, will start the game.

Possible lineup:

Reilly Smith - Jonathan Marchessault - Oscar Lindberg
David Perron - Cody Eakin - James Neal
William Karlsson - Erik Haula - Brendan Leipsic
Tomas Nosek - Pierre-Edouard Bellemare - William Carrier

Brayden McNabb - Deryk Engelland
Colin Miller - Jason Garrison
Luca Sbisa - Nate Schmidt

Marc-Andre Fleury
(Malcolm Subban)

Scratched: Griffin Reinhart, Jon Merrill, Brad Hunt

Pickard cleared waivers. The three scratches are d-men, so they have 9 right now.

PS: It will actually be at 5:30 in Vegas, 7:30 in Dallas, 8:30 PM ET, so I won't be able to watch it, or maybe the first few minutes.

Hopefully the website you found will keep finding great streams for the games. I am using it to watch the beginning of this game. Anthem, now.

Neal doesn't look injured at all. Physical, and he draws a penalty, Radulov to the box.

Very good job by their first unit. A couple of bad passes, but they managed to get the puck back, and they got a few good looks.

Fleury with two great stops, now! But the Knights look at least as good as the Stars. No worries, they look like a solid team.

Radulov (Stars) with two huge hits, so far (and an interference on Neal that cost him a penalty). I'd say Radulov and Spezza are the only reason why the Stars do not look too bad in this game. And their goalie Bishop.

And now a brawl, started by Marchessault, I believe he was not happy at the way Neal had been hit twice in a row. He'll go to the box alone. Dallas on the PP.

Killed, and the Knights quickly get their second PP.

Not as good as the first one, only one shot on goal.

Roussel bumps into Fleury, his second penalty of the game. Knights to the PP again with 2:27 left in the period.

It really looked bad from the angle I saw it live, but the replay shows he only hit his skates.

Knights with some potential chances, but a guy fans on a shot that could have been a goal (it was not easy, though).

And just as the penalty ends, team penalty against the Stars for illegal substitution, Roussel goes back to the box to serve it.

The first period ends, 0-0. 1:34 left to the PP.

Shots are 14-10 Stars, but the Knights looked better than that, because the Stars blocked 10 of their shots. Attempts are 25-18 Knights.

I'm still watching. Fleury very busy in the second period, fantastic saves, especially on the penalty that the Knights just killed in the middle of the second period.

Knights always rushing to the other end every time they get the puck, though. They are a fast team, and their counter-attacks are really good.

Wow, 2-on-0 breakaway for the Stars, Radulov has the puck, he doesn't pass, tries his chance as if it was a penalty shot, denied by Fleury!

Bishop also with some good stops.

And Seguin scores the first goal on the PP, late in the second period.

Sixth PP for the Knights with 2:38 to go in the period, though.

Oh, Bishop makes a save but falls back.

Geez, from the top, we can see: the puck slowed down but went through him, so he let himself fall back on it! Then a Knight sent the puck into the net, but after a quick review: no goal. There was a whistle just before the puck entered the net.

Neal with a monster hit on Seguin in the last seconds! Seguin really not happy, and there was a risk at a general brawl when the period ended, but finally they'll go calm down a little in the locker rooms.

I'll stop here. Knights are definitely a good team. They need to improve their PP. They have 4 or 5 very good forwards, and they look solid overall.

Knights won 2-1, two 3rd period goals by James Neal- Nate Schmidt the primary on the tie, and Cody Eakin the primary on the win.

Nice.

Yes, I have just watched Neal's goals. Schmidt gave the puck to Neal in a cool way (a blind pass) on the tying goal (it was on a delayed penalty, Neal was the extra attacker). Great for them. Great for the city, after what happened. They have a team that is immediately competitive and fun to watch.

Gotta add: Bishop was hit in the mask and had to be replaced by Lehtonen 4 minutes into the third period.

Neal scored the tying goal off a Dallas d-man. He scored the game-winning goal on his knees, a great one.

Fleury made 45 saves (!!!) and was the first star of the game, of course (Radulov and Neal the two others).

They won their second game too. Almost the same scenario: trailing 1-0, until past the middle of the third period, then they score two to win. This time, it was Schmidt, with 1:12 left to regulation, then Neal with another game-winner, 3:46 into overtime.

They have not scored a goal yet in the first 50 minutes of regulation time, LOL.

Schmidt is 1-2-3 in two games.

They're getting all they could dream of from Neal, Schmidt and Fleury, and the other guys are doing good too.

This time they outshot the opposition, and didn't give too much work to Fleury: 42-28.
