I put this as a new article because we were on a thread about free education.
I support all the good progress we have made. But let me rant abit.My biff is with the health structure.I feel its slowly selling out to other interest and loosing forcus ,making doctors feel out of place, not important and some even question why they choose to study medicine at the first place.Politics is one of the main culprits
Real doctors should run the health sector from top to bottom.Either national or international doctors it doesn't matter. We want doctors in charge.People who are trained in fighting diseases and running an operational health service.
Many doctors give up because politics is slowly creeping into the health sector and it kills the interest of young doctors.Thats why they leave and go abroad or go find another job.Kids who want to study medicine have no heros to look up too.I have 5 relatives in the health service. Two working for the govt their life went for better days to worse.National housing commision went down they went down too.The others are lucky. They work for the church and church takes care of its own.One had to start all over again studying accounting at DWI.
It also discourages researches because you have no money.Aid donors won't give money for other fields of researche. They have their own agenda.I see the govt building health buildings here and there and those buildings stand there like statues. No use ,nothing to show for.Buildings won't fight diseases. Its the availability of medicines that health workers are familiar with, thats what fight diseases. And you need real doctors around to instruct nurses on using new medicines.I heard some medicines given by aid donor companies are so new.Even doctors are reluctant.Doctors need special training in these new medicine. But they have no time and very limited alternative to choose from.Malaria is okay ,PNG doctors understand it well.
Sometimes theres supplies but bush nurses can't use them because they don't have enough knowledge on some of these new medicines. Its too high for their knowledge. And if no doctor then they just do what ever they can to help the patients.
Today I saw and article on the Post Courier titled 'Minister’s bid to rid graft'.Here is the link http://tinyurl.com/3rjovbw .HEALTH and HIV AIDS Minister Jamie Maxtone-Graham said he'll put his footdown on corruption within the administration |
