Nangu

I have been leaving overseas for the past six years and will be returning at the end of the year. My family has two cars (one car for wife and one for me) and we intend to ship both cars to PNG as we return home.

My question is will the customs charge me custom duty for the cars or can I bring it to the country as my property? Appreciate comments and suggestion from those of you who have gone through these experience.

Tenk yu wantoks

As far as I can remember, if you owned the car for more than 12 months you may be eligible to bring it in for free, i.e.,tax free but you may still end up paying for clearance. Customs check the registration papers and as long as both cars are registered separately under yourself and wife, yes you may bring both cars in. You should check the IRC web page to get more details or better still call them up directly for their advice.

Sometime back in the news this year (Thought I read somewhere), the port of Vanimo in West Sepik was awarded the free trade zone status. I think what this means is that if you import stuff into PNG via Vanimo, you won't be charge much or any custom fees and etc.

Please confirm with IRC. I may be wrong.

Hello Wantok,
I think you should have a look at this page/site http://www.customs.gov.pg/index.html
and get it writing from customs, and keep a copy of the email and your contact at customs for when the vehicles hits PNG.
The general rule is if you can show ownership of the vehicle including insurance papers for 12 months or more the vehicle should come into PNG screen free, but there will quarantine fees.

The minimum period is 6 months. There should be no customs duty and gst if owned for more than six mnths. you will only need to pay for frieght plus clearance fees. Only problem is trying to take 2 vehicles in but if as you said can show to the customs guys there that one is for you and the other is for your wife you should be ok. What I would suggest is get a customs agent to do the talking for you, you just provide them with the papers and your vehicles should be delivered to your door steps

Nangu, you should bring it in as part of your "personal effects" and yes, every doc are to yours and mrs name....check with customs and abide by their laws, it is easier (not saying you are not) - believe you should be OK to bring it home duty free. Safe journey home...good to see wantoks coming home.
