In PNG we suffer from lack of information. As a result it is hard to judge the truth about many things, esp internatinoal issues. Not being able to distinguish between fact and fiction is made even more difficult by the internet where anyone can state anything with enough authority to make it sound true, even if its not.

Not being able to distinguish fact from fiction makes us as a people vulnerable to being manipulated into believing things that is not accepted by the world at large. When that happens, it is easy for foreigners to laugh at us and call us fools even though we're not. An issue that has recently been talked about on pngscape is our fascination with strange ideas that have been labeled conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories are an explanation of any event as being the result of a plot by some kind of secret group or organization. Conspiracy theoriests believe that important political events or economic and social trends are the products of secret plots that are largely unknown to the general public.

The reason why more than 95% of conspiracy theories never become generally accepted by the majority of highest educated people as true is because those who believe in them do not use the standard form of logic and objective debate to discuss the issue.

The "Obama deception" movie is an excellent example of conspiracy theories.

These longlongs with the crazy ideas are all over the internet. Difference between them and people like Einstein with crazy ideas that turned out to be true is that the longlongs coverup their lack of overall evidence by using certain sneaky techniques like these------->

1. They promote their theories using arrogance. They're the ones that push the theories into other peoples faces, portraying themselves as fact-seekers, questioners, people who are trying to discover the truth. They label anyone questioning as sheep, ignorants, etc.

2. They never give up. Going on and on about a conspiracy no matter how little evidence they actually present, or even when the evidence they present is discredited. Even if you listen to them ninety-eight times, the ninety-ninth time, when you say "no thanks", you'll be ridiculed.

3. Inability to answer questions. For people who loudly advertise their determination to the principle of questioning everything, it's odd how poor that are at answering direct questions from sceptics about the claims that they make. The fact is that they know a lot less about the topic than how they present themselves.

4. Fondness for repeating certain phrases and slogans. Whatever phrase they use again and again, they usually use it as a screen to allow them to escape any responsibility to produce positive, hard evidence themselves: you simply "eliminate the impossible" (i.e. say the official account can't stand scrutiny) which means that the wild allegation of your choice, based on "isn't the answer obvious?" is therefore the truth.

5. Inability to employ or understand the concept of human logic that the simplest explanation is nearly always the most factual explanation. Aided by the principle in 4. above, conspiracy theorists never notice that the small inconsistencies in the accounts which they reject are dwarfed by the enormous, gaping holes in logic, likelihood and evidence in the explanation that they want us to believe.

6. Inability to tell good evidence from bad. Conspiracy theorists have no place for peer-review, for scientific knowledge, for the respectability of sources. The fact that a claim has been made by anybody, anywhere, is usually enough for them to reproduce it and demand that the questions it raises be answered, as if intellectual enquiry were a matter of responding to every rumour. While they do this, of course, they will claim to have "open minds" and abuse any sceptics for apparently lacking same.

7. Inability to withdraw. It's a rare day indeed when a conspiracy theorist admits that a claim they have made has turned out to be without foundation, whether it be the overall claim itself or any of the evidence produced to support it. Moreover they have a liking (see 3. above) for the technique of avoiding discussion of their claims by "swamping" - piling on a whole lot more material instead of responding to the objections sceptics make to the previous lot.

8. Leaping to conclusions. Conspiracy theorists are very keen indeed to declare that the "official" account has been totally discredited without offering very much evidence to support their claim. Of course this enables them to wheel in tactic #4 above. They jump on small inconsistencies in the account of an event, small unanswered questions, small problems in timing of differences in procedure from previous events of the same kind as being enough evidence to declare the commonly believed explanation to be completely false. It goes without saying that they don't think it is necessary to first prove that these inconsistencies are either relevant, or that they even definitely exist.

9. Picking through a mountain of evidence to find the anthill that supports their claim. It doesn't matter that only 10 pieces of evidence out of 1,000 support their claim - they'll focus on those 10 pieces, pretend that the other 990 pieces of evidence don't exist, and hammer endlessly on those 10 pieces of evidence hoping that we'll get the conclusion that what they give us is what the majority of the evidence supports.

10. Using previous conspiracies as evidence to support their claims. This argument often invokes previous scandals or conspiracies to support later ones, in an attempt to convince us that their conspiracy theory should be accorded some weight (because it's “happened before”.) They do not pause to reflect that the conspiracies they are touting are almost always far more unlikely and complicated than the real-life conspiracies with which they make comparison, or that the fact that something might potentially happen does not, in and of itself, make it anything other than extremely unlikely.

11. It's always a conspiracy. And it is, isn't it? The most important thing about these people is that they entirely lack the ability to distinguish a good theory from a bad one, good evidence from bad evidence, or a good source of information from a bad one. And for that reason alone, you'll find that they always come up with the same answer when they ask the same question: it's always a conspiracy!

The New World Order: This popular conspiracy theory claims that a small group of international elites controls and manipulates governments, industry and media organisations worldwide. The primary tool they use to dominate nations is the system of central banking. They are said to have funded and in some cases caused most of the major wars of the last 200 years, primarily through carrying out false flag attacks to manipulate populations into supporting them, and have a grip on the world economy, deliberately causing inflation and depressions at will. The people behind the New World Order are thought to be international bankers, in particular the owners of the private banks in the Federal Reserve System, Bank of England and other central banks, and members of the Council on Foreign Relations, Trilateral Commission and Bilderberg Group. Now, although this conspiracy theory was ridiculed for years, it turns out that the Bilderberg does meet and requests no media coverage. They receive no media coverage. The world’s elite meet every year and it goes largely unreported, for what?

Discussions at the meetings include the economy, world affairs, war and in general, world policy. After the financial collapse, the Bilderberg played a key role in proposing that the world prepare for a new world order and have a standard world currency. This was propsed shortly after by almost all attendees of the Bilderberg meeting. During the 20th century, many statesmen, such as Woodrow Wilson and Winston Churchill, used the term “new world order” to refer to a new period of history evidencing a dramatic change in world political thought and the balance of power after World War I and World War II. Thus, activists around the globe formed a world federalist movement bent on creating a “real” new world order. A number of Fabian socialist intellectuals, such as British writer H. G. Wells in the 1940s, appropriated and redefined the term “new world order” as a synonym for the establishment of a full-fledged social democratic world government. In the 1960s, a great deal of right-wing conspiracist attention, by groups like the John Birch Society and the Liberty Lobby, focused on the United Nations as the vehicle for creating the “One World Government”, and contributed to a conservative movement for United States withdrawal from the U.N.. Your posting has all the ingredients and fits most of the checklist of criteria to be a world class CONSPIRACY THEORY! We were badly in need of a classic example and the "New World Order" is the current choice of the decade by the longlongs!

Believe me if you read all the postings in this thread about the new world order, illuminati, etc, it becomes abundantly clear that it is the epitomy of a conspiracy theory. It has all the elements of a classic conspiracy theory. This was always one of the most classic of all the conspiracy theories. The "climate change is a hoax" conspiracy theory has evolved very recently by comparison to the old Illuminati standard.

Brains that accept these conspiracy theories are rarely ever the kinds of brains who invent new things and advance society because the illogic inherent in conspiracy theories wouldn't allow those people to objectively test, explore, innovate and advance.

However, I believe these conspiracy theories keep enough of the mentally ill in our society fully occupied, which gives them no time to think up things that could be harmful to the rest of us. Thus, I personally believe that these conspiracy theories serve a useful role in our society as ridiculous as they are.

There's no doubt real conspiracies happen - such as the FBI's Counter Intelligence Program, various things the CIA has done over the years, and so on. There is a level, beyond civil, criminal, and political conspiracies where most "conspiracy theories" rest. These tend to be vast cover ups involving a lot of people with complex scenarios having little or no direct evidence to validate them.

"Conspiracy theorist" is a generic term which includes people who create conspiracy theories, those that fallow them with undying faith, and also those who believe the conspiracy theories, but it's not an obsession. To help separate these kinds of people, in this article I will use three basic categories:

CONSPIRACY CREATOR
A person such as Alex Jones, David Icke, etc that create and perpetuate conspiracy theories through various media. This also includes big names that do not directly make up conspiracy theories themselves, but simply perpetuate them, such as Peter Joseph.

CONSPIRACY BELIEVER
These are the majority of conspiracy theorists, who do not base their lives around conspiracy theories, but rather incorporate them into being real, and a natural part of life - such as a person who believes the JFK assassination was done by someone other than Oswald, but does not worry about it too much.

CONSPIRACY NUT
These are the kind of people who believe in conspiracy theories with absolute faith, and it's a sort of religion, even though many (but not all) of them would claim to be skeptical of religion itself.

We can't just dismiss all these crazy theories out of hand, because real conspiracies do sometimes happen. Instead we should look for signs that indicate that a conspiracy theory is probably untrue. The more that it manifests the following characteristics, the less probable that the theory is grounded in reality. There are all kinds of examples of conspiracy theories being promoted on PNGscape, including the argument that climate change is a grand conspiracy by governments, businesses, scientists, etc.

(1) Proof of the conspiracy supposedly emerges from a pattern of “connecting the dots” between events that need not be causally connected. When no evidence supports these connections except the allegation of the conspiracy or when the evidence fits equally well to other causal connections — or to randomness — the conspiracy theory is likely to be false.

(2) The agents behind the pattern of the conspiracy would need nearly superhuman power to pull it off. People are usually not nearly so powerful as we think they are, nor are they able to pull off grand plans without making mistakes.

(3) The conspiracy is complex, and its successful completion demands that a large number of elements fall in place in just the right way.

(4) The conspiracy involves large numbers of people who would all need to keep silent about their secrets. The more people involved, the less realistic it becomes.

(5) The conspiracy being promoted encompasses some kind of grand ambition for control over a nation, economy or political system. If it suggests world domination, the theory is even less likely to be true.

(6) The conspiracy theory takes small events that might be true and uses them to argue much larger, much less probable events.

(7) The conspiracy theory assigns sinister meanings to what are most likely innocuous, insignificant events.

(8) The theory tends to mix together facts and speculations without distinguishing between the two and without assigning degrees of probability or of factuality.

(9) The theorist is indiscriminately suspicious of all government agencies or private groups, which suggests an inability to nuance differences between true and false conspiracies.

(10) The conspiracy theorist refuses to consider alternative explanations, rejecting all evidence that goes against what they're arguing and blatantly seeks only information that will support what he or she has already decided must be "the truth" - whether or not it actually is.

When dealing with governments, if you have a choice between a conspiracy and a stuff-up, always choose the stuff-up. A good conspiracy requires a high degree of organisation. From my observations over many years, governments, and their various agencies, could not organise a f--k in a Brothel.

It's mentioned in the bible and we are seeing with our own eyes that the world is being drawn closer through technological advancements and the UN. For one thing, the one world government conspiracy theoriests conveniently ignore all the countries that have broken apart over the past 20 years. Tribalism is still alive and well in the world!

According to a Senate report, in the 1930s, GM, Goodyear, Firestone Tire and a bunch of oil companies joined together to form a number of fake rail companies. They would buy up all the small companies that operated America's small town railway systems, then destroy the systems, and soon enough America would run on gasoline-powered tires. By the mid-1950s, the fake rail companies had replaced 900 of the 1,200 public railway systems with gas-powered buses and cars and were ready to take on the biggest electric railway system in the world: Los Angeles. Yes, the city that's famous for bumper-to-bumper traffic once hummed along on 1,500 miles of electric railways. GM bought out the local railway companies, and a few years later there wasn't a single electric streetcar operating in Los Angeles. Today, the smog over LA is so thick that most of the people who live there have no idea they that live at the foot of a beautiful snowcapped mountain range.

Of course, you can't just form an illegal monopoly and get away with it. In 1947, the government convicted 10 of the biggest corporations in America of conspiracy, and fined GM $5,000. GM was able to survive the fine, since the illegal conspiracy had made it one of the most successful companies of the 20th century. And all they had to do was destroy the infrastructure of some of America's biggest cities and screw the next dozen or so generations who lived there out of clean, affordable transportation.

As long as the conspiracies are small, manageable, and essentially relate to the profit motive, they can work. The most famous conspiracy theories, however, involve far more complexity than the example you give. I loved this viewpoint in the Wikipedia article mentioned previously:

There are several problems with a conspiratorial view that don't fit with what we know about power structures. First, it assumes that a small handful of wealthy and highly educated people somehow develop an extreme psychological desire for power that leads them to do things that don't fit with the roles they seem to have. For example, that rich capitalists are no longer out to make a profit, but to create a one-world government. Or that elected officials are trying to get the constitution suspended so they can assume dictatorial powers. These kinds of claims go back many decades now, and it is always said that it is really going to happen this time, but it never does. The Plan:
For years, Britain had a spiffy trade deal with Iran regarding their prodigious oil fields. The Anglo-Iranian Oil Company was basically a giant money machine for the Anglo half, while the Iranian half got shafted. That all changed in 1951 when Iran nationalized the AIOC and the Iranian parliament elected Mohammed Mossadegh as Prime Minister. Mossadegh was relatively secular, something that pissed of Iranian clerics, but he was also very nationalistic. When Britain tried to regain control of the AIOC, he gave them the finger. Tea was spilled, crumpets were dropped and monocles everywhere popped out in shock.

You can guess what happened next. Jolly old England went to its ally, the United States, and convinced President Dwight D. Eisenhower to help overthrow the democratically elected leader of Iran and install a pro-West monarchy. Together the CIA and British intelligence services funneled guerrilla troops, anti-Mossadegh propaganda and tons of bribes into Iran.

How did that work out?
In the short term? Great! The mostly ceremonial position of Shah (king) of Iran was restored to its former imperial glory, but this time as a puppet of the West. The White House and Tehran became BFFs, and as long as the US government overlooked the numerous human rights abuses happening in Iran, all was well.

Until 1979, that is, when a pissed off Iranian populace finally revolted and replaced the monarchy with an anti-West Islamic Republic. One messy hostage crisis later, and Iran and the US were no longer BFFs. But hey, at least the US learned a very important lesson about overthrowing the governments of unfriendly Middle Eastern countries.

The Plan:
Sometimes referred to as the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, the idea was that the United States government was going to monitor the effects of syphilis and perform experiments on those who had a developed form of the disease. That doesn't sound so bad, right? Well you're a terrible person for thinking that, because the experiments were exclusively performed without consent, and on the very poor, mostly illiterate black males.

These men weren't told that they had syphilis and were denied proper treatment for their disease. Because that would have skewed the results, you see. But hey, at least the government promised free burials to those who died.

How did that work out?
The study (started in 1932 in Tuskegee, Alabama) eventually rounded up 400 black men in a move that would inspire Rage Against the Machine-esque lyrics for years to come. But, contrary to conspiracy enthusiasts, they did not actually give people syphilis, they just examined the symptoms of people who already had the disease. Then, things got out of hand:

Doctor 1: "Darn. I'm afraid that we might not get the numbers we want for the next part of this study."

Doctor 2: "Hmm ... Well, why don't we just underline the word "Free" and tell them that it's a special treatment for their symptoms."

Doctor 1: "But, wouldn't that be a horrible lie?"

Doctor 2: "A horrible what?"

When there was a national campaign to use penicillin to stamp out the disease, those in the study were denied access. If they complained loudly enough, they were given a placebo and then sent back home to die. But not before scientists poked and prodded them for the remaining years of their life.

It took until 1972 for someone to blow the whistle on all of this. That's 40 years. And that's after Peter Buxtun, the whistle blower, went to the Center for Disease Control, which told him that they would absolutely end this barbaric experiment, just as soon as they completed the last stage of the study. That stage involved studying the corpses of the subjects, and of course they couldn't do that quite yet because some were stubbornly still alive.

As a result, in 1974 they passed the National Research Act, which finally closed the apparent loophole in American law that said it was OK for mad scientists to kill people in their experiments.

Obama gave his Berlin speech in front of Berlin’s Victory Column — the exact location that Hitler had planned to enthrone himself in the Welthauptstadt Germania.

Evidently it was not problematic for Obama, who stood in front of it and saluted the German audience in a way eerily similar to what Adolf Hitler used to do, followed by thousands returning the salute, which is against German law. When Obama ended his speech in front of the war goddess, he said, “With an eye toward the future, with resolve in our hearts, let us remember this history, and answer our destiny, and remake the world once again.” This is exactly what Hitler had promised to do and exactly where he had planned to memorialize it.

Of greater significance and not far from where Obama delivered his rousing speech, is the Great Altar of Zeus in the Pergamon Museum. According to several reports, Obama visited the Great Altar while in Berlin, which is especially important given what he did on returning to the United States. Before we examine Obama’s revealing actions, consider carefully what the Bible says about the Altar of Zeus in the letter to the church in Pergamos (Pergamum, Pergamon).

Approximately two-thousand years after Revelation 2:13 was written, German archeologists removed the massive altar of Zeus from the ruins of Pergamos and took it to Berlin, where it was restored as the centerpiece of the Pergamon Museum. But it was not until blogger Joel Richardson pointed out how the design of Obama’s stage was a dead ringer for the Great Altar of Zeus [6] that Obama’s campaign managers tried to explain away the design as being a conglomeration representing the portico of the White House with the U.S. capital building. “But experts agreed with Richardson,” Gallo wrote, “it was a replica of the Great Altar of Pergamum.”

My friend, I spent several years in Australia. During that time I had the pleasure of attending 2 different Lutheran churches in different places.

I must say that neither was 666 ever mentioned nor any promises of getting rich by the pastors. These topics were absent as far as I could tell.

Instead both the churches I attended were focusing the congregation on doing good deeds and on personal development. Personal development was to try to follow the example of Christ and live a giving life for others. This was a complex challenge and we had to explore many aspects of our personal lives to identify the hypocrisies. It was a process.

I got so much positive out of that process and the message to live a more Christ like life. These churches gave me the inspiration to improve myself step by step to remove my sins and live in the way Jesus would want me to.

Promising cargo cult type things is a sad reflection of some Christian churches. It is like bribery to make people become Christian like they're going to get rich. I agree with you that those churches are useless. They are attracting people to hear the preaching of Christ by saying there will be a big payoff in the end. Jesus would not want people attending church only for the cash payout. These kinds of churches are corrupt.

Even if true its a waste of limited time we could instead be spending spreading the gospel in ways that each and every one of us can directly apply. Instead we could be using that time to focus on our personal spiritual development in everyday life to conduct ourselves in a more Christ like way.

How to Help

It doesn't take long for people to start with one conspiracy theory, and then move on to many others. The deeper the person is into the conspiracy theory world the harder it is to bring them out of it. Simply confronting them with information containing counter arguments will often push them away and make them untrusting of you when the fact is you need to engage with them in order to help them with their mental illness.

One of the best ways I have found for helping someone come to terms with the logical problems of conspiracy theories is to get them to explain them. For example, if they believe in New World Order conspiracies, have them explain the who, what, when, why, where, and how - down to the smallest detail, if they skip over something or talk about generalities, get them to explain it again in more detail. Helping them realize how many people it would take to be involved in a given conspiracy, or the complexity of oen, often helps with presenting them with counter arguments. If you can find ways for them to bring up counter arguments themselves then it isn't hard for them to to start to realize the broader logical problems with the majority of conspiracy theories.

Be prepared though, some people latch on to conspiracy theories like some people latch on to religion; nothing in the world can get them to see beyond a vast conspiracy involving thousands of people - they simply believe it and will create any argument or scenario in their mind to help validate it. Those people are probably beyond help, even by professional mental health experts.

One of the conspiracies I help people confront others on most is the New World Order. Most of the New World Order conspiracy theories originate in some way or another from the Book of Revelations in the Christian Bible. If the person you want to help claims to not be a Christian or doesn't believe there's a connection (most common with Zeitgeist followers), then present them with web sites describing the scenario of the Book of Revelation. In the end, both are almost identical scenarios - a secret elite/the anti-Christ creates a one world government, with one currency, to control people via some kind of microchip/thumbprint/tattoo. Taking apart each one of these, it isn't hard for a conspiracy theorist or Evangelical Christian to see things such as the UN, Federal Reserve, National ID Cards, and so forth as a part of this Revelation/Conspiracy scenario and that is one reason they have been interlinked for so long - since the dawn of the UN, and in many cases even before, the NWO and Revelation have always been right around the corner and have yet to appear. The concept of the NWO, World Government being evil, etc originates from Christian end time scenarios, despite the religion of believers in the NWO believe today. In fact in the 1980s and prior, NWO conspiracy theorists were fairly limited to Evangelical Christians and the American Militia Movement.

As you work to help your friends and relatives cursed with this affliction please realise that it is extremely difficult to convince people of things without fancy videos, sexy stories, and helping them feel unique and special by seeing something that most people are blind to. Conspiracy theories are romantic and sexy to people, and that's why they're so attractive.

Did the government cover-up involvement in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks?

Is Elvis still alive and kicking? What about Michael Jackson?

Was John F. Kennedy assassinated at the hands of multiple shooters?

Do the Freemasons control the United States?

A small but fervent group of people believe there was more than included in historical record about the aforementioned events. Conspiracies, they call them. And every generation has its own.

Some of them turn about to be true, after all: Pearl Harbor was a Japanese conspiracy and Nixon’s Watergate break-in was a coverup.

But with so few that turn out to be true, why do people believe in conspiracies?

A new article in Scientific American tries to figure that out. Michael Shermer outlines in his “Skeptic” column four traits of those who believe:

patternicity, or a tendency to find meaningful patterns in random noise;
agenticity, or the bent to believe the world is controlled by invisible intentional agent;
confirmation bias, or the seeking and finding of confirmatory evidence for what we already believe;
hindsight bias, or tailoring after-the-fact explanations to what we already know happened.
A conspiracy theory takes flight when all of these are concocted into a heady mix of conviction. It’s called “conspiratorial cognition,” and it’s the fuel driving belief in Bigfoot, Area 51’s UFOs and the paranormal.

But research has been thin on precisely why some have a conspiratorial dispensation.

Back in 2007, Patrick Leman wrote in the New Scientist that belief in conspiracy theories is on the rise thanks to the distribution power of the Internet.

QUESTION: Is obsession with conspiracy theories a sign of schizophrenia?

My husband and I have been married for over 3 years (been together 5 years). For the last two years of our marriage, my husband has become obsessed with conspiracy theories. Initially, I chalked it up as a new hobby/interest. But lately (over the past year) his obsession has progressed and has me alarmed. He spends countless hours on the internet researching conspiracy theories, mostly political (i.e. 9/11, new world order, Illuminati, reptilians, and I could go on and on). We can't have a conversation with him bringing up some sort of theory. He brings them up if were out with other friends or at a party. This concerns me because I feel like he's not the same person I married. He used to be driven, ambitious, and had career goals. He's an engineer and once had dreams of starting his own company. But, he doesn't speak of it anymore. I feel as if we have nothing in common. He becomes defensive and argumentive when I disagree with his theories. One day out of the blue, he went out and bought a huge safe, withdrew all of his savings and bought gold. He wants to to start stockpiling food and supplies for some sort of catastrophic event that he believes is coming. His health history is unremarkable. He does use marijuana daily (which he did prior to our marriage). His younger sister was diagnosed with schizophrenia in her early teens and lives in some sort of assisted living. Should I be worried that he is also showing the beginning signs of schizophrenia, also?

ANSWER: I would be concerned about your husband if I were you, so I understand your question. It just so happens that an obsession with conspiracy theories was one of my major problems when I was psychotic, and my schizoaffective disorder (which was diagnosed as schizophrenia first) was full-blown. Not everyone who has an obsession like that is psychotic, of course. But if a person begins to be paranoid about groups/organizations/people coming after him/her, or if she/he is obsessed with the idea that the end of the world is coming, or if she/he thinks it is necessary to hide belongings, I would say that it is likely something psychological is wrong. Since his sister has Schizophrenia, and since mental illnesses are more likely in family members of someone who has Schizophrenia, I would suggest to him that he see a psychiatrist for an evaluation. It is possible that there are more paranoid, delusional beliefs that your husband has than the ones that he talks about with people. Many times, people who are psychotic do not discuss all their symptoms with others, so it is hard to know how ill they actually are by simply viewing their behavior. Since your husband is so adament about his beliefs in these conspiracy theories, it sounds like they are deeply held beliefs which may be delusions. I cannot diagnose someone, as I am not a psychiatrist or a medical professional of any kind. I would recommned that he sees a professional to discuss these beliefs and any other paranoia that he has going on. I wish you the best of luck with helping him. There is only so much we can do to help others. If he is unwilling to see someone, because he does not believe he has any illness, it may be a very difficult situation. You might wish to contact your local NAMI (national alliance on mental illness) chapter as they have excellent Family-to-Family courses and educational meetings in many parts of the United States.

On Wednesday, May 16, I spent several hours on a hot bus in a neon desert called Las Vegas with a merry band of British conspiracists during their journey around the Southwest in search of UFOs, aliens, Area 51 and government cover-ups, all for a BBC documentary. One woman regaled me with a tale about orange balls of energy hovering around her car on Interstate 405 in California, which were subsequently chased away by black ops helicopters. A man challenged me to explain the source of a green laser beam that followed him around the English countryside one evening.

Conspiracies are a perennial favorite for television producers because there is always a receptive audience. A recent Canadian Broadcasting Corporation documentary that I participated in called Conspiracy Rising, for example, featured theories behind the deaths of JFK and Princess Diana, UFOs, Area 51 and 9/11, as if there were a common thread running throughout. According to radio host and conspiracy monger Alex Jones, also appearing in the film, “The military-industrial complex killed John F. Kennedy” and “I can prove that there's a private banking cartel setting up a world government because they admit they are” and “No matter how you look at 9/11 there was no Islamic terrorist connection—the hijackers were clearly U.S. government assets who were set up as patsies like Lee Harvey Oswald.”

Such examples, along with others in my years on the conspiracy beat, are emblematic of a trend I have detected that people who believe in one such theory tend to believe in many other equally improbable and often contradictory cabals. This observation has recently been confirmed empirically by University of Kent psychologists Michael J. Wood, Karen M. Douglas and Robbie M. Sutton in a paper entitled “Dead and Alive: Beliefs in Contradictory Conspiracy Theories,” published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science this past January.

How do all the world's estimated 10 million or more species get on one boat? How do they all eat, especially since nearly all of them would naturally be eating other animals and plants found on that same boat. And there are only 2 of each kind, right? Has anyone calculated how large such a boat would have to be? How do they all eat when only 2 of each kind are on board?

These are touchy subjects. Nonetheless, if you are a Christian and believe in what the Bible says then you have to accept that Jesus did make mention at length of the Anti-christ and his rulership upon the earth prior to Christ's return. Many Christians tend to shy away from the subject because of the fear factor involved. While atheists tend to attack the bible and Christ's message as fake, fable or conspiracy. But as Christians we believe and stake our lives upon its message. After all, the gift of eternal life is a lot to lose.
